SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The upcoming San Diego Blood Bank's blood drive brings those impacted by the donations of others into focus.One of those people brought into focus is Bryan Caraveo. Bryan was hit by a dump truck while riding his bike to work on National Bike to Work Day.Due to the accident, Bryan suffered a traumatic brain injury, collapsed lung, several broken ribs and a broken nose, clavicle and vertebrae.Bryan underwent two surgeries that required several blood transfusions, according to the blood bank.RELATED: San Diego Blood Bank partners with Westfield, ABC10 to host 'The Gift of Health'In describing the first moments he woke up in the hospital and realized what had happened Bryan said, “It was a matter of realizing that I was awake somewhere I didn’t know where I was or how I got there.”Bryan’s life was in part saved thanks to people who donated blood to the San Diego Blood Bank.“It makes me feel great because I know that at some point there were people who donated that helped me,” said Bryan.Bryan now frequents the blood bank to give back to those who gave him back his life.He also shared some advice for those on the fence about making a blood donation. “Take a look at your family and friends that are around you and imagine that in an hour they need blood. Are you willing to give a pint of blood to save their life? If you’re willing to give, you know, your family and friends a pint of blood, what about somebody else?” 1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USNS Mercy leaves San Diego Friday for a deployment to Asia.The U.S. Navy's hospital ship will take part in a mission called Pacific Partnership, which was created after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The crew’s goal is to provide disaster relief and medical assistance to Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia."Our staff and team have come together to form a dynamic team of professionals and we are ready to execute this mission and engage with our partners throughout the Indo-Pacific," said Capt. David Bretz, commodore of Destroyer Squadron 31. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego will begin its first over water testing of lighting on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, as the Port continues efforts to install lighting across a portion of the bridge.The testing will start on Sunday, Nov. 8, and continue to Saturday, Nov. 14, from 6:15 p.m. to midnight.The testing will include 170 computer-programmed LED lights and controllers temporarily installed on three of the bridge's tallest columns near the center of the structure. Each night, a live technical test will be conducted in different colors, combinations, sequencing, and arrangements."This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what’s possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront," said Commissioner Marshall Merrifield, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline."The testing will see periods of darkness as other aspects are being tested, so the lighting won't be constant illuminated.The upcoming testing is the second test of the project. The first took place in April 2019, when lighting was tested on two columns over land on the San Diego side of the bridge.Following the over water testing, the Port will reach out to community members for input about the lighting and design. 1530

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Rapid Response Network (SDRRN) gave 10News an exclusive look inside the shelter where they help asylum seekers daily. The location of the shelter is kept private to protect the migrants. Rapid Response usually houses people for 24 to 48 hours. When migrants first arrive, they see a doctor the go to an intake room where volunteers help make travel arrangements with family members already inside the U.S. The migrants are fed three times a day and are each given a full set of clothing. Sometimes, the network even funds their travel plans. Volunteers at the shelter tell 10News they are running out of resources to continue helping. They want city, county and state officials to step in and help. In the meantime, they are relying on donations from the community. They've set up a GoFund Me campaign and a travel fund for the migrants who need help with transportation. The city tells 10News they are exploring all options to help.Tuesday, the asylum claims of six Hondurans were accepted for processing, ending a 17-hour standoff, according to the Associated Press. The asylum seekers arrived at the crossing Monday afternoon but after several hours in the U.S., inspectors agreed to process claims of eight unaccompanied children and a mother with her five children. Six more weren’t initially allowed into the country and sat on blanket through the night before authorities processed their claims. The impasse highlighted a U.S. practice to limit entry for asylum seekers at official crossings when they are at full capacity, which it calls "metering" or "queue management." 1622

According to a new 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll released Tuesday evening, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has moved into the lead with 25%. In another shakeup, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomerg surged into second place at 21%.Former Vice President had been the leader in each 10News/Union-Tribune poll taken this election cycle until this latest result. In the new poll, Biden fell to third place at 15%, with former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 12%.
