WASHINGTON, D.C. – Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is calling on the Republican leadership to work with Democrats to raise the dollar amount of the direct payments in the relief package after President Donald Trump threatened to sink the bill without the increase Tuesday night.Pelosi said in a letter to House Democrats on Wednesday that she will go to the floor and ask for unanimous consent to bring a standalone bill that would increase the individual payments from 0 to ,000, which Trump requested in a video released on Twitter. To do so requires the agreement of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the same would also need to be done in the Senate.“If the president truly wants to join us in ,000 payments, he should call upon Leader McCarthy to agree to our unanimous consent request,” wrote Pelosi. The House is scheduled to go in for a pro forma session Thursday. If McCarthy agrees to the unanimous consent request, Pelosi tweeted, “This can be done by noon on Christmas Eve.”Mr. President, sign the bill to keep government open! Urge McConnell and McCarthy to agree with the Democratic unanimous consent request for ,000 direct payments! This can be done by noon on Christmas Eve!— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) December 23, 2020 Throughout the long negotiations over the COVID-19 relief bill, Democrats advocated for higher amounts of direct payments, but Pelosi says the GOP would never go above 0 and some cases, they proposed 0.Trump’s request came as a surprise to Democrats, but they’re hoping to get the increase in funds approved as soon as possible. Along with the 0 billion in relief, the bill also includes government funding, which will need to be approved by Trump by Monday to avoid a shutdown.“The entire country knows that it is urgent for the president to sign this bill, both to provide the coronavirus relief and to keep government open,” said Pelosi. However, even if Trump does decide to veto the bill that was passed by both the House and Senate on Monday, the legislation was cleared by lopsided votes in both chambers, so Congress could override it. 2116

WASHINGTON, D.C. — To hear artist Harvey Pratt describe the new memorial in the National Mall is to understand just how much it means to him and others.“Almost all tribes use sacred fire and water and they use the earth and air,” he said. “I thought, ‘you know, that’s what I’ll use – those elements.'”Pratt designed the newest memorial in Washington, D.C. – the National Native American Veterans Memorial. He faced an enormous task.“I thought, ‘How do you connect 573 federally-recognized tribes, plus the state-recognized tribes – without being specific to a certain tribe or region?’” he said.Nestled beside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, it is a place meant for reflection and remembrance.“Native people, tribal people, have always respected their veterans,” Pratt said. “Almost every tribe has a memorial to their veterans.”Yet, there’s never been a national one in such a prominent place until now.“We held 35 consultations across the country and met with about 1,200 people because we really wanted to get a sense of what they wanted to see in the memorial, what the experience of visiting it should be,” said The Smithsonian’s Rebecca Trautmann, who is the memorial’s curator.Congress first authorized its construction in 1994. However, money needed to be raised in order to make it happen; the construction was funded by private donations.“Native people have been serving in great numbers and with great dedication from the time of the Revolutionary War, up to the present,” Trautmann said, “and they continue to serve in in large numbers.”That includes Harvey Pratt, who is a Cheyenne-Arapaho, a Cheyenne Peace Chief and a veteran who served in Vietnam.“I just want people to know – we’re still here. Native people are still here and when Native people come to the memorial and do their ceremonies, that we’re going to educate non-Native people,” Pratt said. “They’ll see us doing things, they’ll ask questions and they’ll come to know us a little better.”The memorial is now providing a new way for others to get to know a group of American veterans, who now have a place where their sacrifice is recognized. 2154

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hispanics make up the largest emerging ethnic group in the United States and one that the outcome of this year’s elections may hinge on.“Eight out of every 10 Latinos in our country are United States citizens. The other thing that is important to know is that, during presidential elections, eight out of 10 Latinos, who are registered to vote, vote.”Clarissa Martinez is with UnidosUS, the largest Latino civil rights organization in the country. UnidosUS is now working on voter registration outreach, in the run up to the 2020 election.“We have a lot eligible, but unregistered, voters,” Martinez said.According to the Pew Research Center, a record 32 million Hispanics will be eligible to vote in the 2020 election, many of them in valuable swing states.Hispanics make up about 20% of eligible voters in Arizona and Florida, nearly a third of the potential electorate in California and Texas, and more than 40% of eligible voters in New Mexico.“Basically, in pure numbers, [it] means that, if they were a solid bloc, they would really make a significant difference,” said Dr. Eduardo Gamarra, a political science professor at Florida International University.Yet, he adds – Hispanics are not a solid voting bloc. For example – in past elections – Cuban Americans tended to vote Republican, while Mexican Americans favored Democrats, with Puerto Ricans sometimes split between the two parties.“It is a very diverse community,” Dr. Gamarra said. “It's national origin, but it's also income. It's also race, to a certain extent, right? And Latino women, in some measure, in some places, vote different than Latino men.”That means campaigns may need to tailor their messages, depending on which part of the Hispanic electorate they’re trying to reach. It’s outreach that Clarissa Martinez argues is often missing when it comes to Hispanic voters.“In the last two presidential elections, for example, 60% of Latino voters who were highly likely to vote said that they had not heard from campaigns or candidates – which, frankly, is political malpractice,” she said. However, she says it can be rectified with a simple political playbook.“Candidates matter, their positions matter,” she said, “and meaningful outreach is essential.” 2254

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump presented the nation's highest military honor Wednesday to an 80-year-old retired Marine sergeant major who five decades ago "fought with unmatched bravery" at the beginning of one of the Vietnam War's longest and bloodiest battles.John Canley's heroism includes twice scaling a hospital wall in view of the enemy to help wounded Marines and carry them to safety."I like brave people. You meet them right here," Trump said as he opened the ceremony. "Fifty years ago, an American Marine fought with unmatched bravery in one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War, the battle of Hue city."According to the White House, Canley, a native of Caledonia, Arkansas, now living in Oxnard, California, fought off multiple enemy attacks over several days in January and February of 1968 while his company of about 150 men carried out a counter-offensive to retake the city of Hue from North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces, which numbered into the thousands. The operation by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces became known as the Tet Offensive because coordinated attacks against targets in South Vietnam, including Hue, were launched as the Vietnamese celebrated the lunar new year, or Tet holiday."He assaulted enemy strongholds, killed enemy fighters and with deadly accuracy did everything you had to do," Trump said. "He raced into heavy machine gun fire on many occasions — all to save his fellow Marines. In one harrowing engagement after another, John risked his own life to save the lives of those under his command."Canley took over after his commanding officer was severely wounded in the battle to retake Hue, which was held by at least 6,000 communist fighters, Trump said.On the fifth day of combat, Canley's company was charged with liberating the Joan of Arc school, which had become the communists' strategic and symbolic stronghold in the city.Machine gun fire greeted them. Canley and a colleague charged forward with rocket launchers, killing enemy fighters and driving them from their positions, Trump said."The enemy didn't know what the hell happened," Trump said.Canley personally saved the lives of more than 20 Marines during seven days of "unrelenting combat," the president said.As the years passed, some of the Marines who fought alongside Canley pushed for him to receive the highest commendation for a U.S. service member. After a review of the case, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis agreed in December 2017 that Canley was deserving of the honor.Congress passed legislation waiving a five-year time limit on awarding the medal. Trump signed the bill into law in January. 2661
