SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV): Drug enforcement experts in San Diego are warning about a new, deadlier opioid on the streets - Carfentanil."You've got Fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin. And then Carfentanil, which is 100 times stronger than Fentanyl," explains DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane.Carfentanil was originally created to be used as a tranquilizer on large zoo animals, like elephants. The FDA initially restricted it's manufacture to just 28 grams per year in the US.According to FDA Spokesperson Lindsay Haake, "The sponsor of Wildnil, a form of Carfentanil, voluntarily relinquished the approval for this potent analog of Fentanyl in March 2018, as it hadn’t been marketed in at least five years, and because the sponsor wanted to avoid any potential public health effects associated with diversion of the drug if marketed in the future."It only takes .02 mg of Carfentanil to cause a deadly overdose in humans. That's about the same size as a couple grains of salt."The fact that it's as potent and deadly as it is, and we don't know when it's going to show up or where it's going to show up is of most concern," Ruane adds.There are currently two cases involving Carfentanil working their way through Federal Court in San Diego. In one, a dealer was caught with 1.77 grams of the drug. In another case, search warrants related to overdose deaths in 2017 led to 20 people charged on 3 separate indictments.So far, only 3 people in San Diego have died from Carfentanil, all in 2017. But the DEA is still sounding the alarm."It's extremely dangerous to the public and that's what we want to get out there," says Ruane.He says drug makers are mixing Carfentanil in counterfeit pills. The fact that just a small quantity will produce a major effect makes it more profitable. Drug manufacturers are including it in pills they try to pass off as Oxycontin or Xanax.Experts say taking a pill like that is the same as playing Russian Roulette."If you're at a pill party and people are distributing pills, you have no idea what's inside," says Assistant US Attorney Sherri Hobson. "Why would you take something when you have no idea what's inside?"Ruane says that most of the illegal pills are made in back rooms, bathrooms, warehouses or other labs with no quality control. That makes them more dangerous because there's no consistency between what's in each pill."You could have two people, they take the same kind of pill from the same batch, and one person is fine while the other one dies," he says.He says the safest thing to do is avoid any pills when you don't know their source."If you're not under treatment from a doctor and you haven't gotten the pill from a legitimate pharmacy, don't take it. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. Officers are investigating the attack as a felony battery and robbery case.Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspects is asked to call SDPD’s Eastern Division at 858-495-7957 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Scattered showers sprinkled all across San Diego County Saturday, bringing with it up to a quarter inch of rain. While rain totals were not significant, it was the reason for hundreds of car accidents.At 11:40 AM, 10News found a passenger van flipped onto its side. The driver said he was turning onto the Home on-ramp on WB 94 when he hydroplaned and flipped over. With some help from good Samaritans, he was able to climb up out of the passenger side door. He was not hurt. There were no passengers. One of many solo spin-outs happened on the 163 S to the 8 E on-ramp. The driver said at around 12:30 PM, he lost control of his truck at the top of the loop, then smashed into the concrete barrier. He said he felt lucky he did not roll down into a 50-foot embankment like another car did just a few hours prior in the same spot.RELATED: Check today's San Diego forecast10News crews also saw countless fender benders and flatbed tow trucks roaming the highways. Mother nature also wreaked havoc onto herself. At around 2:30 PM, a tree toppled onto Northbound 805 near Plaza South.Branches partially blocked the slow lane until clean up crews arrived.By afternoon, the rain clouds started to concentrate over North County. A three-car crash happened along Westbound 78 near the Nordahl Rd on-ramp in San Marcos. The small red vehicle ended up mangled, and the Prius somehow climbed up an embankment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of volunteers, from all over the state, are in San Diego for Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency preparedness campaign. It’s called “California For All.” The campaign is designed to help emergency responders during wildfires and other disasters. California For All campaign is bringing together 600 volunteers. The Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT, is on a mission to help prepare people in the community in case of a natural disaster.CERT members are also trained to assist first responders. “It’s an opportunity for community members to learn basic skills to prepare their community to respond, in case of a major disaster or any event, where the actual true responders can’t get there on time” Dore Bietz. Governor Gavin Newsom and legislators came together to make a million commitment to the campaign. A video message from the governor was played during today’s session. CERT members also help engage diverse and socially vulnerable communities during times of need. “It is very difficult for first responders to come in when there is a language barrier,” says Bietz. CERT is a FEMA- recognized program. Members suggest every household should have a plan in case there is an evacuation in their area. 1265

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Rady Children’s Hospital announced their partnership with Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey, to expand its opioid-free Pain Management Program.10News met 17-year-old Jasper Neale at Rady Children's Hospital. Neale said in the summer of 2014, he was at a junior lifeguards camp at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas. When he was running on the sand, he fractured his heel. His family thought it was a straight forward injury. But the pain started to spread everywhere, making him immobile.“It went up my calf, and my whole leg and calf were getting really swollen,” Neale said. “It started with like a three out of ten, but it became a ten out of ten for my whole body.”His x-rays showed recovery, but his pain was not going away. The injury puzzled locals doctors. "They kind of just said, ‘We're not sure.’ This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen,” Neale said. Their last hope was the Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey, where they had an advanced chronic pain management program. There, the specialists told him his diagnosis: complex regional pain syndrome."You never take any drugs. You literally have nothing but yourself,” Neale said. Unlike traditional methods of pain relief, this program does not use any opioids.“People want a quick fix. The magic pill. The magic surgery to make everything get better, but most of the time, that's not available,” Andrew Skalsky, Division Chief of Rehabilitation Medicine at Rady Children’s Hospital, said. They have a tough love approach, combined with alternative therapies."I came in being unable to walk, and the very next day, they forced you to run. They forced you to swim."“Unfortunately with a lot of chronic pain patients, they actually have to somewhat create more pain to make themselves better, but then also giving them the emotional and psychological tool kit to cope with that pain,” Skalsky said.Today, Rady Children’s Hospital announced they too will be adopting this program, so in the future, patients like Neale can get the treatment they need closer to home. For Neale, it was a seven-week treatment in New Jersey that fixed his chronic nerve pain. He came back to Encinitas, not hooked on drugs. There were no side effects. "From the day I left to now, I can do everything I want to do,” Neale said. Neale’s recovery led to the discovery of a new passion. The 6’8” senior at San Dieguito Academy is now a star volleyball player. In the fall, he will play for the University of Toronto."Going from being completely dysfunctional, to being a fully functioning human, with only doing it through physical therapy and natural ways is amazing,” Neale said. Ready Children’s Hospital said this approach is not for all treatments. This one focuses solely on chronic pain. 2782
