NEW YORK -- A suspended NYPD officer is now facing criminal charges after using an apparent chokehold during a now-viral arrest in Queens last Sunday.Officer David Afanador has been charged with attempted aggravated strangulation and strangulation in the second degree, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Thursday.The 39-year-old cop, who has a history of complaints against him, was arrested and booked at his own Queens precinct just after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to police.If convicted, Afanador faces up to seven years in prison, the DA's office said.DA Katz acknowledged that body-camera footage shows the officers being cursed at and badgered before the incident. "Everyday, however, police officers find themselves in circumstances that require them to exercise restraint and are charged with de-escalating potentially volatile conflicts," the district attorney said."Even under the most difficult of circumstances...this kind of action is exactly the kind of police conduct that the NYPD has banned and our State Legislature criminalized," Katz added.Afanador was suspended without pay Monday, just a day after being caught on video pinning 35-year-old Ricky Bellevue to the ground and apparently putting him in a banned chokehold in the confrontation on the Rockaway Beach boardwalk.Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the time it was the fastest he'd ever seen the NYPD discipline an officer.The NYPD released the body-cam video of the arrest almost immediately after bystander video of the incident went viral.Prosecutors opened the investigation into Afanador’s actions Monday, saying at the time "there must be zero tolerance for police misconduct."Afanador was acquitted in a prior case stemming from allegations he pistol-whipped a Bronx teenage suspect and broke two teeth in 2014.The officer has had eight Civilian Complaint Review Board complaints filed against him, including use of excessive force and denying medical attention, since he joined the force in 2005.The use of excessive force by police has sparked weeks of protests and rallies in New York City and nationwide.The outcries for police reform prompted Commissioner Shea to shake up leadership at the NYPD. NIPAWIN, Saskatchewan (AP) — Canadian police said early Saturday 14 people were killed and 14 people were injured after a truck collided with a bus carrying a junior hockey team to a playoff game in Western Canada.Police say there were 28 people, including the driver, on board the bus of the Humboldt Broncos team when the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35 in Saskatchewan."We can now confirm fourteen people have died as a result of this collision," The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a release early Saturday."The other fourteen people were sent to hospitals with a variety of injuries; three of these people have injuries that are critical in nature."No names were released, and police would not say whether players or coaches were among the dead. There was no mention of the truck driver.The team president said parents from across Western Canada were rushing to the scene as they struggled to cope with the tragedy."It's one of the hardest days of my life," said Kevin Garinger. "There have been multiple fatalities — our whole community is in shock, we are grieving and we will continue to grieve throughout this ordeal as we try to work toward supporting each other."Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, said her 18-year old son Ryan had been taken to a hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan."We talked to him, but he said he couldn't feel his lower extremities so I don't know what's going on," she said. NEW YORK, N.Y. – Barnes & Noble has warned its customers of a cybersecurity attack which may have exposed consumer information.The bookstore chain informed its customers of the attack in an email Wednesday night, but said their payment information and other financial data has not been compromised, because it’s encrypted and not accessible.However, the email obtained by CNN and Business Insider says the attack resulted in unauthorized access to company systems that do contain customers’ email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, and telephone numbers.The company says it doesn’t currently have evidence that this data has been exposed, but it cannot be ruled out at this stage in the investigation.The company says it learned of the attack on Saturday, Oct. 10.“We take the security of our IT systems extremely seriously and regret sincerely that this incident has occurred,” wrote Barnes & Noble. “We know also that it is concerning and inconvenient to receive notices such as this. NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The teacher whose actions stopped a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School om Friday said his actions were, in his mind, "the only acceptable actions."Science teacher Jason Seaman didn't say much Monday morning in his first press conference since the shooting on Friday. But what he did say only reinforced what many already know about Seaman: It's not about him. He brushed off credit for stopping the shooter, instead praising other teachers, students and the school resource officer at the school. "I want to make it clear that my actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could've done given the circumstances," Seaman said. "I deeply care for my students and their well-being. That is why I did what I did that day."Police say Seaman, 29, tackled a student who started firing in his classroom Friday morning. He was shot three times during the incident, but released from the hospital Saturday. Ella Whistler, a student at the school, was shot Friday. Her family says she's doing well at Riley Hospital for Children."I can't say enough how proud of Ella I am and how we all should be," Seaman said. Stern was already making a reported million a year. He's invaluable to the company, which had 600,000 subscribers when Stern announced in 2004 that he was joining and now has nearly 35 million. "I had been in a toxic relationship with terrestrial radio. And no matter how well I treated the medium, no matter how successful I made them, they abused me," Stern said in a press release.
