SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has seen a nearly 5% increase in its response to the 2020 Census above the 2010 response rate, according to state census data.Data collected through Tuesday indicates 72.9% of county households have responded this year, as opposed to 68% in 2010, mirroring an increased response rate statewide.Census officials say that California's 2020 self-response rates surpassed the 2010 rate on Wednesday, with 68.4% of California households responding either online, by phone or mail. The 2010 rate was 68.2%.State census officials touted the success of their outreach campaign, particularly given California is considered one of the ``hardest-to-count'' states in the country due its size and a high number of people who are difficult to contact for census purposes, such as recent immigrants, people who lack high-speed internet access or people with limited English proficiency.Campaign efforts will continue until the Sept. 30 deadline.``It is through the collective efforts of millions of Californians that we have surpassed our 2010 self-response rate. But make no mistake -- we are not done yet. We know the hardest-to-count Californians still may be missed or undercounted given the shortened deadline, so it's essential these households complete the form now,'' said Ditas Katague, director of the California Complete Count -- Census 2020.``With two weeks left, our message is loud and clear: Californians need to act and fill out their Census forms,'' Katague added. ``We have just days to secure funding and representation in our state for the next decade. We haven't been without our challenges -- federal operational changes and instability, the impact of COVID-19, wildfires and more. Given all that, we are proud of this milestone and all those who have stood up to be counted for their families and their communities.'' 1869

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of Santee called on residents today to help it develop a brand to market the city to tourists, businesses and potential residents.Santee recently partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a marketing brand for the city. To that end, the marketing agency launched an online survey for Santee residents to give feedback on the city's strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Responses to the survey are anonymous, according to North Star Destination Strategies."We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North American and I can't emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members," North Star Founder Don McEachern said.Residents can access the survey at the city's website and submit it electronically. The survey is also available in physical form at Santee City Hall. The surveys must be submitted by Sept. 2 to be considered."It is important for us to celebrate what we love about our community and share it with others," Santee Mayor John Minto said. "The future is bright in Santee; I sure hope you can see it because I can." 1119

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego announced Tuesday the completion of upgrades to 15 of the city's most accident-prone intersections. The improvements are part of the city's Vision Zero program, with a goal of eliminating fatal traffic accidents altogether by 2025 via infrastructure upgrades and traffic safety education. Circulate San Diego released a list last April of the city's 15 most dangerous intersections. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Circulate San Diego Executive Director Colin Parent held a news conference at the last intersection to be fixed, 33rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard, to discuss the improvements, which include higher-visibility crosswalk designation and audible pedestrian signals and countdown timers. ``This is all about making it safer for everyone -- drivers, pedestrians and cyclists -- as they navigate city streets,'' Faulconer said.``Making crosswalks more visible and adding audible walk signals are just a few of the simple yet effective ways we can make our neighborhoods safer.'' Other intersections that underwent improvements include: - 10th Avenue and A Street- Fourth Avenue and B Street- Fifth Avenue and B Street- Euclid Avenue and Naranja Street- Fourth Avenue and University Avenue- Fourth Avenue and Market Street- Ash Street and Front Street- Coronado Avenue and Thermal Avenue- 33rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard- 52nd Street and University Avenue- 36th Street and El Cajon Boulevard- Sixth Avenue and Market Street- Fifth Avenue and Broadway- Sixth Avenue and Broadway- 11th Avenue and BroadwayFaulconer announced plans to fix more than 300 more accident-prone intersections during his ``State of the City'' address last month. According to Faulconer's office, Caltrans has awarded the city roughly .45 million for the improvements, which will start next year. City officials expect improvements to the first 50 intersections to be completed by the end of 2020. 1926

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The National Institutes of Health awarded San Diego State University a grant of nearly million to build a center for medical research on health issues in San Diego and Imperial counties, the university announced today.SDSU received the grant from the NIH's National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, which supports schools that serve large populations of minority students. According to university officials, 31.5 percent of SDSU's first-year undergraduate students are members of at least one underrepresented minority. The .9 million grant is the second-largest the school has ever received, after a million federal grant the university received in 2014 to expand to the country of Georgia.NIH is expected to administer the grant over five years to fund construction of the HealthLINK Center, multiple research projects and annual seed funding for four researchers pursuing pilot projects."This a wonderful recognition of the faculty's excellence in health disparities research, and a significant opportunity to build on that excellence so that SDSU can remain a leader in this field for years to come," said Stephen Welter, SDSU's vice president for research.SDSU expects to work with local health care agencies and providers like the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Health Centers of San Diego and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo Inc. through the HealthLINK Center. Two professors, Guadalupe Ayala and Kristen Wells, are currently leading the project.Construction is already underway on the HealthLINK Center, which is slated for completion by the end of 2019. 1642

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State will play a football game against the Colorado Bulldogs on Saturday at Boulder, Colorado, in a replacement game for both schools, SDSU announced Thursday. The Aztecs' originally scheduled game Friday at Fresno State was canceled earlier this week due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Fresno State program. The Mountain West Conference declared the game a no contest, and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday. On Thursday night, Colorado's scheduled game against USC at the Coliseum was canceled and declared a no-contest because USC did not have the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game at a specific position group as a result of a number of positive COVID-19 cases, and the resulting isolation of additional players under contact tracing protocols. The Aztecs (3-2) are coming off a 26-21 loss at undefeated Nevada on Saturday. The team will resume Mountain West play against Colorado State on Dec. 5 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. 1039
