NEW YORK -- An officer with the New York Police Department was suspended Sunday night after viral video showed police use an apparent chokehold on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway.Four officers were on top of the man and one officer had his arm wrapped around the man. The officer got up after another officer tapped him on the back and appeared to pull at the back of his shirt."While a full investigation is still underway, there is no question in my mind that this immediate action is necessary," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said.Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was the fastest he'd ever seen the NYPD discipline an officer."This is how it needs to be," he said. "The officer who intervened to stop his colleague did exactly the right thing. I commend him. That is what we need to see from all our officers."Lori Zeno, the man's attorney, said she thinks her client would have been choked to death if the officer hadn't been stopped.After the video surfaced, an NYPD spokesperson said it was being taken "extremely seriously" and that there was an active investigation underway by the Internal Affairs Bureau.Police got a call for a man being disorderly on the boardwalk near Beach 113th Street on Sunday morning, officials said. Zeno said he was a visible wound on the back of this head.Charges against the man are pending, police said. It's not clear what the NYPD intends to charge him with, but the man's attorney said it's the suspended police officer who should be charged."He's an idiot and he's a bad cop and he needs to go," Zeno said. "He needs to get fired and needs to get prosecuted."Mayoral spokesperson Freddi Goldstein called the video "very concerning.""We’re glad the NYPD is immediately launching an investigation to get to the bottom of what happened," she said.Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said her office is also investigating."There must be zero tolerance for police misconduct," she tweeted. NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for a man they say assaulted a New York City bus driver who asked him to put on a mask before boarding the Manhattan bus.According to the NYPD, the unidentified man attempted to get on the northbound New York City Transit Authority (MTA) bus near Madison Avenue and East 29th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday without a mandatory face covering.The bus driver, 62, stopped the man, telling him he had to put on a mask to ride the bus, police said.According to authorities, the man punched the bus driver in the face before fleeing the bus in an unknown direction.The victim suffered pain and swelling and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.Face coverings or masks are required on all MTA buses, subways and trains as the city continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.The NYPD has released the above surveillance images of the man for whom they're searching.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Rebecca Solomon on WPIX in New York City. 1022

No Crime Stoppers reward will be given to the woman who alerted police of the Waffle House shooter's whereabouts after he killed multiple people in Antioch. That's because the woman did not submit a tip through Crime Stoppers, instead, calling 911 with the suspect's location. "I get goosebumps talking about it," Lydia French said as she recalled the day that the suspect was caught. French spotted the man coming out of the woods near her worksite, next to where the suspect lived, when she called police. She then spotted the suspect a second time and called 911 again. "When he came out of the woods the second time and I got a good look at him, oh, I knew. I knew for sure. I called 911 back the second time and said, 'Your guy is right here. It's him,'" French said.She said police responded immediately."It was crazy. I've never seen so many vehicles just storm an area like they did," she said. While French called in the tip to 911, she was surprised that she wasn't given a reward from Crime Stoppers, and many others were confused about the situation as well."Unfortunately, we cannot pay the reward on this as Crime Stoppers was contacted after they advised the police department," an email from Crime Stoppers read.Crime Stoppers is a separate entity from the police department. "I actually thought they were hand-in-hand," French said. According to Liz Parrott, the chair of Nashville Crime Stoppers, to get a reward from Crime Stoppers, tipsters have to call the tip line, (615) 74-CRIME, or submit the tip through their mobile app. In the case of the Waffle House manhunt, French called 911. She never called Crime Stoppers, not until a month later to inquire about the reward. Crime Stoppers is designed to get tips in cold cases or in cases where someone with information wants to remain anonymous, and it generally isn't used in active crimes like the Waffle House manhunt."Anytime there's an active crime in progress, 911 is always best," Parrot said. While French said it isn't about the money, she wanted to get her story out so the public would know in the future: If you want the Crime Stoppers reward, you need to reach out to Crime Stoppers before the police. "I'm glad I could do what I could do to make the community and everybody feel safer, I just hope the families get justice," French said.French was given a ,000 reward from the TBI for her assistance in the case.  2478
