On my list: Satellite radio, cable, a clothing subscription and a movie loyalty program.Next, look up each company’s website. You’ll usually find a variety of contact methods, including live chat, text messaging, email and a phone number.While you’re searching online, gather information about your current package and pricing, as well as any new promotions from your current company or competitors that can be used as leverage.Cut out what you don’t needSet aside a block of time — maybe an hour or so — and work your way through the list.My first call was to our satellite radio service provider. My husband and I have a SiriusXM subscription. But after months of spotty reception in our car, I decided it was time to cut the service completely.Instead, over the course of a 10-minute phone call, I asked to cancel, then I was met with a better offer. Before, we paid .63 per month. Now, we pay .06 a month for 12 months (for the same plan). Plus, they threw in a free month.Threatening to cancel a service can be a bargaining tactic. Here, it was the truth — I was fully ready and willing to cancel. And it got me a better price.Next? That clothing subscription. A five-minute online chat with athletic brand Fabletics resulted in me canceling my membership. Before, I paid .95 a month as an account credit, unless I logged into my account and shopped or skipped by the fifth day of the month.The customer service representative offered a store credit to stay, but I went ahead and canceled anyway.DowngradeBe patient. There’s a time commitment involved. Plus, things don’t always work out.I spent 45 minutes online chatting, then talking on the phone with DirecTV. As the pandemic began taking an economic toll in the spring, providers across a broad spectrum of industries stepped up to extend payment assistance and waive late fees for customers.I contacted some service providers to see how they’re continuing to help consumers who are struggling.Most telecommunications companies, such as Dish and Comcast, provided similar advice: If existing customers have questions or are interested in lower monthly payments, they should go online or call customer service.Contact companies proactively, and if you’ve been laid off or otherwise affected by the pandemic, be honest about your situation.Look for resources that don’t require any effort, too. Driving a Budget rental truck tattooed with a temporary Red Cross logo through the Kashmere Gardens neighborhood, volunteers hand off two cases of water to 26-year-old Joel Salazar.He takes it inside his empty apartment--a converted garage owned by his aunt-- where he's lost just about everything he owned. They didn't have insurance. But then again, they didn't expect it to get as bad as it did."The water [from the creek occasionally] gets high over here, but it's never high enough to go into a house. And everybody kept saying, it's not going to be that bad," Salazar said, adding, "I'll be fine."Now, he's relying on the kindness of others to get by--a mattress donated by friends, a t-shirt given to him by a local graphic printing company, and a place to sleep courtesy of his Uncle Hector, whose carpentry skills will come in handy soon. The smell has finally started to fade inside Salazar's place, and they can begin renovations.But there's something else that's made Harvey--and losing his apartment-- that much tougher for Salazar."When I came in here, I just started crying, like I was hurt. This is my house, the place I shared with my mom."Salazar shared the cozy one bedroom with his mother up until her death just over a year ago. She had Leukemia, and for a while it had appeared she'd beaten it, thanks to Salazar; he was the bone marrow donor."And then the cancer came back."She died soon after."I mean, I never really lived on my own until this past past year. It was difficult the first couple of months, and it still is."It was so hard in fact that Salazar had to put most of what reminded him of her--family photographs on the walls and tables--and hide them on the top shelf of his closet. "There was just a lot of memories there, and I just felt depressed every time I saw them."But heading home to take stock in what stayed dry, Salazar takes down the boxes of photos--some of his mother's most cherished possessions, now his, too. Harvey, he says, is his turning point. He's quick to stress that he'll always be thinking about her, but no longer will he feel the need to dwell on his mother's death."This flood is actually--it's kind of a good thing because, you know, I can rebuild and make the apartment my place and my home," he said, welling up with emotion. Humanity's first visit to a star began this weekend. NASA's Parker Solar Probe will explore the sun's atmosphere in a mission that launched early Sunday. This is the agency's first mission to the sun and its outermost atmosphere, the corona.After being delayed on Saturday, the probe successfully launched at 3:31 a.m. ET Sunday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket, one of the world's most powerful rockets.Although the probe itself is about the size of a car, a powerful rocket is needed to escape Earth's orbit, change direction and reach the sun.The launch window was chosen because the probe will rely on Venus to help it achieve an orbit around the sun.Six weeks after launch, the probe will encounter Venus' gravity for the first time. It will be used to help slow the probe, like pulling on a handbrake, and orient the probe so it's on a path to the sun. 913
