And now Marian Walter is getting the red carpet treatment for her 106th birthday.Staff at Merrill Gardens at Oceanside say they were shocked to learn Walter was turning 106 because she's one of the most alive, intelligent, and funny people they've ever met.Walter was born in Brooklyn in 1913 and went on to earn a PhD. in Romance Languages and Literature at the University of North Carolina. She speaks seven languages and loved traveling the world. "Italy has just everything in the way of art, you know? It was wonderful. I hated to leave there!" said Walter. Her advice on staying forever-young is to work hard and never stop learning. "Learn as much as you can under any conditions you can do it!" said Walter.As for her birthday wish for the world, "Happiness, decentness. God wants us all to get along with one another. To help one another. To understand one another." Walter has two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years.The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information.The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is alerting students who may have been exposed to meningococcal meningitis.The university says they were notified that a current student has a “probable case of meningococcal meningitis.”The university said in a tweet that it is immediately hosting two clinics for those who attended specific events with the student. The events were the Delta Sigma Phi Formal, held Friday, April 12, from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Spark Encore Event Center; and the Delta Sigma Phi Social Event, which was held Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 p.m. to Midnight, at the organization’s chapter facility. Students who attended the events are urged to attend one of the two clinics that are being offered for free at SDSU. The most common symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are fever, headache and a stiff neck, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s boating community is stepping up to help a family who lost their floating home in a fire. The boat, Both/And World, caught fire while docked at the Shelter Island Marina Saturday just before 3 p.m. "I was just merely walking off of the boat and saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react,” said witness Charlie Colson. The man who lived on the boat with his family grabbed a small hose and tried to put out the flames, Colson said. People on shore grabbed a larger hose and had most of the flames knocked down by the time firefighters arrived. Colson said the family, which includes the man’s wife and 6-year-old son with special needs, had just moved on to the boat last week. The only salvageable items were the boy’s stuffed Donald Duck and his iPad. According to Colson, the flames were sparked by a lithium battery on a charger. Investigators have yet to release the official cause of the fire. “It’s gonna change their plans for a little but it’ll all work out,” said Colson. “The lucky part: no one was hurt; no other boats damaged; family’s okay, other than being rattled.” Colson believes the boat is a total loss.
