A Barrio Logan school that is under construction is the center of a battle. Artists in the community painted a mural at Memorial Preparatory School in the 1970s and part of the construction involves tearing that wall down, an action the artists tried to fight.The artists gathered outside the school Wednesday to voice their concerns over the destruction of the wall. They said they asked the San Diego Unified School District to move the mural before tearing the wall down, but the school said asbestos in the wall made it too dangerous to move and it could not be saved.The artists said the wall is a celebration of the Chicano community.“What I painted on the wall was the diversity of the students, the diversity of the world. I got on there blacks, browns, whites, Chinese and everybody that was concentrated there including Jimmy Hendrix,” said Mario Torero, one of the original artists.A spokesperson for the school district said this construction is years in the making and will ultimately better the community because of the improved infrastructure. The district took high quality photographs of the mural and plans to display those pictures on the newly renovated campus. There will also be space for new murals. They added that they did not want to take the mural down, but had to for safety reasons.For the Chicano community, these actions are not enough. They wanted more effort in trying to preserve the piece of history.“We are finally facing what we want, justice, not just for one, not for all, so this is a very important move we’re doing here. They mean business too, so do we,” said Torero.Wednesday, the original artists and advocates gathered in front of the construction to share their message. Shortly after, a woman sat in the middle of the demolition zone in protest. She was eventually arrested and moments after she left the area, demolition of the mural continued and it fell to the ground. The artists were standing by to watch their work fall.“It is very very hurtful, especially knowing that we were trying to save it and we did everything possible to save it. They went ahead anyway in a callous manner so this just shows you what we’re having to endure.” 2196

(KGTV) SAN DIEGO - A local Vietnam veteran was recently honored decades after his service.  The ceremony was a bittersweet one. Retired Navy Captain, John Cammall, is in hospice care. His son, David, said he will likely never leave his home. "He's been a great father," David said as tears fell and he shifted in his chair at the foot of his dad's bed. (KGTV) -- New cases of the coronavirus are being discovered in Vietnam, in the same port as where 6,500 sailors and Marines on the USS Theodore Roosevelt are docked. The USS Theodore Roosevelt left Coronado on Jan. 17, 2020, for a seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific. Now, seven weeks later, she is docked in Da Nang, Vietnam. Former U.S. Army Sgt. Patrick Furman lives in Hanoi. He still keeps up with military affairs in Vietnam. "This is only the second time that a carrier visited Vietnam post the war," Furman said. He said this special visit on March 5, 2020, celebrating 25 years of normalization, is being overshadowed by fears of the coronavirus. The country went 22 days with no new infections, but on Friday, Vietnamese health officials discovered nine new cases, all from foreign tourists. "Literally, the country was ready to announce that they had conquered this virus. That it had been eradicated. And then within 24 hours, all of this happens," Furman said. Vietnamese media reported that two British tourists who tested positive for coronavirus were intercepted and quarantined in Da Nang. It's the same city that now hosts the USS Theodore Roosevelt. "The British, being tourists, most likely went to all the same places that sailors and Marines on liberty would probably want to go," Furman said. According to the USS Theodore Roosevelt Public Affairs, Sailors were scheduled to participate in cultural and professional exchanges, community service projects, sports competitions, and receptions during their port visit. It is unclear if any of the 6,500 sailors and Marines came into contact with the infected individuals in Da Nang. 10News reached out to the US State Department to ask if any of the service members fell ill or if they had to cancel any of their visitation schedules because of the virus. (KGTV) -- Since 2013, Kitchens for Good has helped fight hunger across San Diego by working with local food backs, created programs to help those with troubled pasts, and now they're adding a baking option to their apprenticeship program.After Kitchens for Good launched their culinary apprenticeship program five years ago, it has led to both success and opportunity. "It's an amazing program here, we are so lucky to be here doing this," said an instructor for their baking program. They added in a baking option to their existing culinary program that launched this month.Their apprenticeships aren't your normal "bake and set" classes. They hope students like Kenneth Donato, take what they learn inside to lead better lives. "Just 3 months ago I was living under a bridge, now my wife and I we're living inside. I'm going to school, I work here, and help them out," said Donato.Directors for the nonprofit said out of their 300 apprentices, 85% landed jobs upon completion. Baking instructor Helen Coyne added, "I see so many opportunities in baking and pastry, and I'm so excited for them to have that." They say adding in a baking program means more students can sign up, in hopes more will get hired.The baking program is a free 20-week hands-on course for those who qualify. 1291
