BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities said Tuesday that rains are expected to fall on parts of east China starting Thursday, offering some respite to a wide-ranging heat wave that had wreaked havoc across the country over the past few days.From Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, a number of the elderly and children were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. Some zoo animals died or struggled to survive by laying on ice.Also, a passenger bus caught fire in downtown Beijing and swarms of locusts blanketed a couple of dry prairies and grasslands in the north.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) raised the heat alert to orange on Tuesday, one step before the highest level, and said at least 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were enduring the extreme heat.In Beijing, the temperature shot up to 40.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's early July heat record in more than 50 years. Further, the extreme high temperatures would continue in north, east and west China for the next 24 hours before rains begin to fall, the authorities said."Every day we have about 300 patients, 100 more than the average," Qin Jian, head of the emergency unit of Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing, said. "The wards and emergency rooms have been full right from the morning."

BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy had conducted a large scale of live-ammunition training exercise in the South China Sea, according to a front-page report on Thursday's PLA Daily newspaper.The exercise, which was carried out on July 26, brought together a large group of warships, submarines and combat aircraft.During the exercise, warships and submarines from the Navy's South China Sea Fleet performed precision strikes on surface targets by firing guided missiles while surface warships conducted anti-missile air defense operations, said the PLA's official newspaper.A naval aviation fleet also participated in air control operations, according to the report, which did not specify the exact location of the training or the number of participating warships.In overseeing the training, General Chen Bingde, PLA's chief of the General Staff, said that the PLA should "pay close attention to the development of situation and tasks" and make "solid preparation for military struggle which depends on massive military training" .

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized Chinese cities rose by 12.4 percent year on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Thursday.The growth rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than that of April, as property sales in first-tier cities, including, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, contracted following a string of government measures to rein in price rises.Second-hand homes prices posted a year-on-year increase of 9.2 percent in May, but fell 0.4 percent from April, said the NBS in the statement.New home prices rose 15.1 percent year on year, down 0.3 percentage points from April.In May, floor space sold stood at 67.77 million square meters, a decrease of 12.74 million square meters from April.Floor space sold in the first five months climbed 22.5 percent from a year earlier to 302 million square meters. BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered floods left 273 people dead and 218 missing since rainstorms struck south China on July 1, latest figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs show; up from the 146 deaths reported on July 16.As of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, about 58 million people in 11 provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by the floods, with 3 million being evacuated and resettled, according to a statement released Wednesday by the ministry.A total of 330,000 homes and some 4 million hectares of crops have also been destroyed.Also, economic losses were estimated at about 58.27 billion yuan (8.53 billion U.S. dollars), the statement said.Additionally on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Civil Affairs earmarked 329 million yuan for disaster relief in the flood-hit provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Hubei and the municipality of Chongqing.The funds will be used for the evacuation and resettlement efforts, reconstruction and death gratuities, said the statement.The previous relief funds of 370 million yuan was allocated to the provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan, and Chongqing Municipality on July 16.Also on Wednesday, the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee allocated 5.5 million yuan "special membership fees" for disaster relief in the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Yunnan and the municipality of Chongqing.Earlier Wednesday, the Chinese government revealed that torrential rains and floods, the worst in a decade, have claimed the lives of 701 people and left 347 missing in China since the beginning of the year.Liu Ning, vice minister of Water Resources, warned that floods, mud-flooding and landslides would likely continue to plague some areas in Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi with landfall of a severe tropical storm, named Chanthu, on Thursday.
