SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The fate of a beloved torrey pine - saved from the chopping block more than seven years ago - is once again in question.Along tree-lined Long Branch Avenue, one tree has captured the hearts of Jeff Ray's family."My kids loved it.  They touch it all the time.  It's wonderful," said Ray.The towering torrey pine is believed to be about 90 years old."It signifies the beauty of nature and the history of the area," said Ray.The history includes safety concerns. In 2010, with the sidewalks buckling, city experts deemed it a safety hazard, concerned the leaning tree would fall over. Upset neighbors hired their own arborist. Eventually, the city relented, deeming the tree stabile and repairing the sidewalks.  Since then, the tree has been granted Heritage status, giving it extra protections. Still, safety concerns remain.  On Wednesday afternoon, a city advisory panel met and the city's forester told the group the tree isn't just learning. It's actually on the move."The tree has moved an inch-and-a-half in the last two-and-a-half years. The city is recommending removal of the tree based on safety," said City Forester Brian Widener. 1192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Carte Hotel in the heart of Little Italy is not nearly as full as it could be.It had been open just a few months before the pandemic hit, "We had a great start until March and the virus started showing up," said general manager Henri Birmele.Like many other hotels in California, The Carte is only allowed to book rooms for essential workers.But staff is preparing for when the Governor says they can fully reopen. "We have sanitizers on every floor, every piece of equipment that's available we have throughout the building to take care of team members and hotel guests," Birmele said Common areas will be sanitized every hour, the restaurant and rooftop bar will be spaced out to make it easier to social distance, valet service won't be available, there will be at least 12 hours and a deep clean between when one person checks out and another checks in and room service will leave orders at the door instead of bringing them in. The Carte is hoping to ease people back into hotels by encouraging "staycations" and planning to offer locals discounts and deals. "How people react, I don't know. I think time will tell. I think we have all the precautions in place to make sure that everyone is safe during their stay," said Birmele. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The fate of a local little league is up in the air after a string of costly break-ins dating back six months.At the Sunshine Little League fields off Federal Boulevard, it's not all sunshine and baseball joy."It's unfair, and I just don't like it," said Isaac Lopez, 11, who plays in the league.Two different break-ins were discovered over the weekend. Locks were broken and doors were pried open."It's upsetting. These kids don't deserve this," said league president John-Mario Pujol.The thief cleaned out the snack bar. Stolen from storage sheds: umpire gear and all of the equipment for the kids in the older division, including bats, helmets, gloves, and catcher's gear sets."It's just so petty. Kids are one thing that should be hands off. Stay away from messing with the youth," said Pujol.The break-ins are the latest in a series dating back six months, with more than six in all. In those cases, more equipment and food disappeared. In other incidents, homeless individuals have been found sleeping in the sheds. The total loss from theft and damage is nearly ,000. Pujol says for a low-income community, the loss is painful."We're hurting, in a tough position," said Pujol.The position is made tougher because of COVID-19. Fundraisers have been canceled. There are practices, but no games means no revenues."As of now, we don't have the opportunity to start our league back up. We'd have to generate revenue first," said Pujol."We have to stay at home because of COVID-19, but we get to go to baseball practice and get the energy out. We get to see friends, and it's good to know that something hasn't changed ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The co-founder and CEO of the Super Dentists said that during the current COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been hesitant to get dental work done."The American Dental Association did a survey, and about 75 to 80 percent of the patients across the country feel comfortable about going back to the dentist. About 15 percent want a vaccine before they go back,” said Dr. Kami Hoss.And while he understands the precautions people are making, Hoss said a recent study indicates dentist offices have shown to be safe."There have been zero cases of COVID related to any dentist offices,” Hoss said.And to further help ease the minds of dental patients, Hoss has just written a book titled, "If Your Mouth Could Talk.""I wanted to know what keeps parents up at night and what their worries are. I did some research, and I had 300 pages of stats on what keeps parents up at night. When I read them, I realized that so many of them could be related back to their mouths, and their kids mouths. So, I decided to write a book about it,” Hoss told ABC 10News.He's a dentist and an author, but that is not all. Hoss has a love of music, so he decided to write and compose songs for the Super Dentists. He said his musical inspiration is the rock band KISS."I think KISS made just like beautiful melodies you know with all the great performances they had at their concerts,” said Hoss.It may sound a bit strange a dentist composing music, but he said it has a purpose in the world of the Super Dentists."We do all of these things with characters, music, and the movies so the kids associate something positive to their oral health,” Hoss said. 1655

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh.
