President Donald Trump issued an executive order this week that states new federal buildings should be more like classical designs and “beautify public spaces.” The American Institute of Architects say they are “appalled” by the order.“President George Washington and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson consciously modeled the most important buildings in Washington, D.C., on the classical architecture of ancient Athens and Rome,” the executive order, titled “Promoting beautiful federal civic architecture,” states. It establishes a new council to advise the president on future federal buildings. The order says in the 1950s, government buildings were allowed to look more “contemporary” and created a “discordant mixture of classical and modernist designs.”“The new buildings ranged from the undistinguished to designs even GSA now admits many in the public found unappealing,” the order says.“New Federal building designs should, like America’s beloved landmark buildings, uplift and beautify public spaces, inspire the human spirit, ennoble the United States, command respect from the general public, and, as appropriate, respect the architectural heritage of a region,” the order continues. Then states that “classical and other traditional architecture” have “proven their ability” to “satisfy today’s functional, technical, and sustainable needs.”The American Institute of Architects has already come out in opposition of the order, saying the group “unequivocally opposes” the initiative. They also say they do not, “and never will, prioritize any type of architectural design over another.”“Communities should have the right and responsibility to decide for themselves what architectural design best fits their needs, and we look forward to working with President-Elect Biden to ensure that,” said EVP/Chief Executive Officer Robert Ivy, with the American Institute of Architects in a press statement. “Though we are appalled with the administration’s decision to move forward with the design mandate, we are happy the order isn’t as far reaching as previously thought.”The executive order applies to federal buildings including federal courthouses, agency headquarters, federal public buildings in the District of Columbia, and new federal public buildings that cost more than million. It does not include ports of entry or infrastructure projects. 2371

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said this week now is the time for Congress to act in order to enact legislative and regulatory reforms as the agency says it is strapped for cash.DeJoy’s statement comes as Senator Joe Manchin, D-WV, said in a letter to Dejoy that USPS locations in his state are slated to close or reducing hours. Manchin said he is concerned that the postal service will be less accessible to his constituents.“As a public service, USPS is legally required to deliver mail, to all postal addresses in all regions, at a flat rate, no matter how far it may have to travel,” Manchin said in a letter to DeJoy. “The Service’s affordability and continued accessibility are essential for rural communities, especially those with high rates of poverty. In many areas where reliable broadband is not an option, the Postal Service is their only link to medicine, social security checks, and family members. In recent years, the USPS has seen a decrease in mail volume, going from 170.9 billion pieces of mail in 2010 to 142.6 billion in 2019. Meanwhile, USPS continues to operate routes six days a week.To combat the decrease in revenue, DeJoy wants to implement reforms and cut overtime from the budget. The moves could cause delays in shipments, however.“The Postal Service has spent the last four years unsuccessfully trying to obtain reform legislation from Congress and pricing reform from the PRC, while remaining focused on the efficiency of our operations,” DeJoy said. “Given our current situation, it is critical that the Postal Service take a fresh look at our operations and make necessary adjustments. We are highly focused on our public service mission to provide prompt, reliable, and efficient service to every person and business in this country, and to remain a part of the nation’s critical infrastructure.”Unlike most government agencies, the USPS is statutorily self-reliant, dependent on revenue from services and not from tax funds. 1970

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree says at least 4,800 chicks shipped to Maine farmers through the U.S. Postal Service have arrived dead in the recent weeks since rapid cuts hit the federal mail carrier’s operations. The Portland Press Herald reported Wednesday that Pingree is raising the issue of the dead chicks in a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and U.S. Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sonny Perdue.DeJoy, a Republican donor, took control of the agency in June and has since swiftly engineered cuts and operational changes that are disrupting mail delivery operations. The USPS says it can’t find a claim for the loss of chicks. In one case, 800 live chicks arrived dead in Maine. This is another horrible consequence of the Post Office chaos created by the Trump admin. I'm calling on USDA Secretary Perdue & Postmaster DeJoy to fix this cruel and costly sabotage of @USPS. https://t.co/56449KDkfY— Chellie Pingree (@chelliepingree) August 20, 2020 996

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he’ll do “whatever it takes” to win when asked if he would use his own money to fund his campaign this fall. This comes despite a combined .1 billion being raised between the Republican National Committee and Trump campaign this election cycle as of July 31. The question on whether Trump would partially fund his own campaign came after a New York Times story released on Monday outlined the campaign’s bank account drying up in recent weeks. The report showed that despite a huge fundraising haul, the campaign has spent much of it going into the stretch run of the campaign.“If we needed any more, I'd put it up personally, like I did in the primaries last time,” Trump said. “In the 2016 primaries, I put up a lot of money. If I have to, I'll do it here. But we don’t have to because we have double and maybe even triple what we had a number of years ago -- four years ago.”In 2016, Trump spent million, which paid for roughly 20% of his election bid.But the Trump campaign was well-funded going into 2020 as the president took the unusual step of filing for re-election at the same time he was inaugurated. But the once huge advantage Trump enjoyed in funding has been evaporating. Trump, in part, blamed COVID-19 and Democrats. Trump had the advantage of having a full war chest during the primary season as Biden’s campaign nearly went broke in the days leading up to his surprising come back in South Carolina and on Super Tuesday.“We needed to spend more money up front because of the pandemic and the statements being made by Democrats, which were, again, disinformation,” Trump said. The New York Times reported that the campaign was looking at scaling back its spending. The New York Times previously reported that the Trump campaign was scaling back its TV presence. The move to curtail spending comes as there are still a number of states still in play for both candidates. While Trump has his eyes set at flipping Minnesota and Nevada from blue to red, Biden is going after a large number of states won by Trump in 2016, including Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. The more states in play, the more expensive the election becomes. 2247

(KGTV) - The Poway Unified School District sent parents an email over the weekend on their action plan after a water boil advisory was issued."My boys and I have had the discussion of the importance of safety," Mother and Senior Management Analyst of Poway Public Works Jessica Parks said of her twin high schoolers.
