Two people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed and 16 other children hurt in a stabbing spree in Japan on Tuesday — a rare act of public violence in a country considered one of the safest in the world. The attack took place near a park in the city of Kawasaki, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Tokyo, authorities said.Kawasaki Police said a total of 19 people were stabbed, including the two victims who died. Police said the girl killed was named Hanako Kuribayashi and a male victim was called Satoshi Oyama, a 39-year-old government employee. The suspected attacker also died from a "self-inflicted wound," Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. Police officers previously told NHK that the man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, had stabbed himself in the neck.Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the attack was "heartbreaking.""We must keep our children safe at all costs," Abe told reporters. "I've instructed the related ministers to take immediate action to ensure the children's safety in going to and leaving school."NHK reported earlier Tuesday that three people -- including an elementary school student -- were in critical condition. It's unclear if the girl who died was among them.Japan is considered one of the world's safest developed countries. It boasts one of the world's lowest homicide rates, 1342

UPDATE JAN. 15: Las Vegas police arrested a woman who they say lied about the suspected gunman. The shooting took place in August of 2019 on Interstate 15 near Blue Diamond Road. U.S. health officials estimate that millions of cases of heart disease and other illnesses are linked to abuse and other physical and psychological harm suffered early in life.In a report released Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tried to estimate the impact of harmful childhood experiences on health in adulthood.Health officials acknowledged the study does not prove that these experiences directly cause certain illnesses. And they were not able to rule out other possible factors, such as the stress caused by financial family problems. But the link is strong, and is bolstered by many other studies, said Jim Mercy, who oversees the CDC’s violence prevention programs.“There’s a lot of evidence connecting these things,” and it’s become clear that the more harmful incidents a child suffers, the more likely their health suffers later, he said. For at least two decades, researchers have been looking at how suffering or witnessing traumatic events as a child affects the likelihood of physical injury or illness later in life.Researchers say such stressful experiences can affect how the body develops, and can also put a child on a path to smoking, drug use, and other unhealthy behaviors. The topic has been getting more attention in recent years from public health officials. California’s recently-appointed surgeon general has made childhood trauma and what is known as 1413

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump will donate his quarterly salary to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When the Senate gathers for the next phase of the impeachment process, they will be acting as a de-facto jury -- but this trial phase wouldn’t look like a regular trial.“The Senate has specific rules on how impeachment trials are to be conducted. Those rules can be changed,” said Alan Morrison, an associate dean at the George Washington University Law School. He said how the impeachment trial is conducted will be up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.“He's largely in control,” Morrison said. How would it all look? For one thing, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts would preside over the impeachment trial, though any rulings from him could be overturned by a simple majority of senators. The “prosecutors” – known as managers – would likely be made up of House Democrats and would present their case. They could include Congressmen Adam Schiff or Jerry Nadler, who have been prominent in the House impeachment.President Trump would be defended by a team of administration lawyers. And as for the American people…“I think the American public should look at these proceedings and ask whether they think the House is being fair to the President, the Senate is being fair to the House and whether the President is fairly cooperating with this process and giving answers to the questions being raised,” Morrison said.In the end, it all comes down to whether or not the impeachment of the President should lead to him being removed from office. 1485
