SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish.The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days before the sale of a Del Cerro home was scheduled to close, thieves went on a shopping spree inside the house.In the 5600 block of Genoa Drive, neighbors were jolted by something unexpected."It's shocking because things like that don't happen in our neighborhood," said Diane Cozey.On Wednesday morning, at a three-bedroom, three-bath home that was well into escrow, a disturbing discovery was made by the staging company arriving to collect their inventory. The front door had been left ajar. "Just dismayed that someone could do something like this," said homeowner Randy Arciniega.Arciniega says his home was raided. The furniture, installed lighting, and rugs remained, but just about everything else was gone: towels, pillows, blankets, artwork, lamps, plants and other decor. Also missing was the refrigerator."The only thing that bothered me more is so much destruction happened," said Arciniega.Arcieniega says his beautiful floors were carved up as the burglars dragged the fridge out of the home. The total loss? About ,500.He tells 10News the lockbox was attached to some PVC piping, which was found damaged. The thieves apparently yanked it off the lockbox and somehow got inside it to use the key. Arcieniega says the biggest mistake he made was shutting down the alarm, because so many people were going in and out of the home. He believes the thieves were likely headed back for the rest of the inventory. The washer had been moved from the laundry room to the garage.The break-in happened sometimes between Saturday afternoon and Wednesday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say with the summer months well underway, they've seen an uptick in the number of children that have needed to be rescued from private pools after nearly drowning.Officials say there have been 49 rescues in private pools, beaches, and bays from March through July, compared to 37 in the same period in 2019 and 33 in 2018. Nearly all of those rescued this year have needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment.Of those 49 that occurred this year, 28 were in pools and 14 were in the ocean, lakes, or bays. The rest did not report a specific body of water. Many public pools have been closed since March due to the pandemic."Parents and guardians must take the necessary precautions to keep these incidents from happening," said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said. "Children who swim in pools at home are at higher risk of drowning, especially as parents struggle to supervise their children while continuing to work at home through the summer months because of the novel coronavirus."The county says it's important to teach children to swim, never leave a child unsupervised in or near water, avoid alcohol if you're swimming, and learn CPR.At home, the county recommends installing a fence around the pool and hot tub, installing pool alarms, and keeping an eye on drains and pool toys that could be a tripping hazard. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As a Hillcrest man showered in his apartment, an intruder was helping himself to a "priceless" pendant.The surveillance video that Ramon Castillo has seen countless times remains hard to watch."Scary and very disturbing," said Castillo.In late June on a Monday morning just before 9, Castillo was showering in his apartment on 3rd Avenue. What he didn't know know: he wasn't alone. When Castillo got out of the shower after 20 minutes, the screen door which had been locked was completely open. Surveillance video revealed why. In it, a man pauses at the door and somehow gets past the screen door, before quietly raiding the apartment. Among the items stolen were speakers and a safe from a bedroom closet. Inside the safe: cash, personal documents and jewelry, including a silver pendant containing the ashes of her mother. She passed away in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose."I can't replace that. It's the last thing of my mom and now I don't have anything," said Castillo.The thief who snatched it was in and out in about five minutes. He was seen driving off in a sedan. Castillo say the burglar had to have heard the shower running and went in anyways."He didn't think twice about it.
