on Fulton Street: use the hand sanitizers on the tables.“People just need to come up, sanitize their hands, and grab as many books as they can,” Calhoun said. “This is not a book exchange, so if you grab books, they’re yours from now on.”Calhoun, who teaches fourth grade at Homer Elementary School, transformed her large porch into a library. There are bookcases filled with hundreds of books that she got locally.“The proximity is just wonderful. I mean we’re right across the street from the beautiful school,” said superintendent Scott Salow. “When Ashley sent me a text over the weekend and said, ‘hey can I have access to get these books?’ I said, ‘absolutely.’”They went and grabbed some “goodies,” he said.Since then, the community has donated notebooks, pens, pencils and nonperishable foods like pasta, ramen noodles and canned goods.“I appreciate it’s a small town and people rally together,” Salow said. “Homer is a unique place. It really is a special place from taking care of our local businesses that have been shut down and impacted certainly our kids.”Salow said it was difficult when he told his staff and teachers last Friday that they had to close the school due to the coronavirus pandemic.Their first thoughts were about the children, Calhoun said.“It was devastating,” said Calhoun. “These are our kids and to know that they wouldn’t have the safety of being able to come to school every day and see their friends every day, just being a part of their lives every day, it was devastating for all of us.”Salow said the school is doing its best to meet the children’s needs, like preparing 200 meals a day through a delivery service. They’re hoping that Calhoun’s porch library will help to meet their educational needs while the schools remain closed.Reading is important, she said.“We have a sign out there: ‘Readers make Leaders,’” Calhoun said. “So, you need to be reading. Reading science books, fun books, social studies books, online recipes, everything.”This story was originally published by Lauren Edwards at WXMI. 2048

You’ll want to look up at the night sky Monday, because the much-anticipated “Christmas Star” is set to be at its brightest. The “Christmas Star” in a nickname that’s been given to the astronomical event when Jupiter and Saturn will get so close together, they’ll be especially vibrant and visible to the naked eye.During this “Great Conjunction,” the two planets will be the closest they’ve been to each other in nearly 400 years and it’s been about 800 years since the alignment occurred at night, allowing everyone around the world to witness it.Monday night, NASA says Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length will easily cover both planets in the sky. Those trying to catch a glimpse of the conjunction are encouraged to look toward the southwest sky just after sunset. NASA says you should find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, like a field or park. The planets can be seen with the unaided eye, but if you use binoculars or a telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons.Though from our vantage point, the planets will appear very close together, NASA says they’ll actually remain hundreds of millions of miles apart in space. The conjunction is also happening on the same day as the winter solstice, but the timing is merely a coincidence.“Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits,” said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.” 1874
With the 20th anniversary of 9/11 coming up next year, the children of 9/11 first responders are coming together to share their stories for the first time in a new book due out next year."Even though we all experienced the day, we wall experienced it differently," said Susan Fiorentino, daughter of NYPD Retired Detective Pete Fiorentino, who responded to the World Trade Center attacks. "I was 10," said Susan, now 29 years old. It was Fiorentino's idea and she is leading the project to collect stories. "It’s important to raise awareness this is still a community that is suffering and we need to support them."So far, she has gathered 50 stories, including her own. She says the experience of 9/11 has influenced her and so many other 9/11 children to lead a life of service."I had a lot of people who said because my father because my mother was a first responder, that is what made me get into the first responder field," she said. She is still looking to collect more stories about how the children of 9/11 responders saw their childhood and now adulthood impacted by the day, documenting history through the eyes of some who have never told their stories before."Through connecting with others in my own experience in getting help with being a 9/11 first responder child has helped me so I hope it would help others as well," she said. The book will be published next summer. All the proceeds will go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors first responders and members of our armed forces.Anyone interested in submitting their story should e-mail Susan before December 1 at Susan.Fiorentino11@gmail.com.This story was first reported by Christie Duffy at WPIX in New York, New York. 1706
