SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local couple is making a plea for the return of some family heirlooms after a burglary at their home while it was being fumigated.The mess Denise Duffy walked into is now stamped in her mind and heart."Very upsetting. I just felt very sick," said Duffy.Just off 54th street in Oak Park, after several days of termite treatment, Duffy and her husband met the fumigation crew Wednesday morning so they could get back in their home. Turns out, somebody else had been inside. The tent was sliced open, along with a screen window on the side of the house. The thief ransacked the entire house, stealing electronics and dozens of pieces of jewelry, most of them family heirlooms."My parents are dead. My grandparents are dead, and I had a piece of them," said Duffy.Among the pieces that priceless heirlooms was a gold necklace she wore at her wedding nearly 40 years ago, given to her by her grandfather. Also gone was her husband's gold wedding band."It's pretty tough on you ... brings back memories. Stuff you hope to have for your kids," he said.The Duffys aren't alone. Last week in El Cajon, there was a burglary with a similar M.O. A home - two days into a fumigation - was broken into after the tent was sliced open overnight. In that case, a senior couple lost jewelry, coins and other valuables collected during their lifetimes. The pain of their loss is shared by the Duffys. "Just a violation ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local company is combining old and new technology to try and help the military cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder that some develop after experiencing a shocking or dangerous event, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. San Diego-based Baslyne partnered with medical technology company WAVi to measure the strength and quickness of the brain’s response in members of the military. Together, the companies are using an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brain activity, combined with a specialized test to measure response to various tones.While this technology has been used to understand concussions in young athletes, Baslyne's CEO Tom Kinder said they are now using it to understand PTSD in our military.“It’s probably the most important thing we’re doing,” said Kinder. “We’re looking at brain wave indicators that are showing [or] have symptoms of certain aspects of PTSD.”The test can be as quick as four minutes. It gathers real-time information about your brain performance.“We collect brain voltage information [and] evoke potentials where we give the brain a signal and see how quick it responds,” said WAVi CEO Dr. David Oakley. Oakley said the goal is to do the test on members of the military pre-deployment and track them through their life to find indicators of PTSD.“[It’s] a game changer. If we have enough data, we’d be able to tell if they’re the same as when they were when they deployed,” Oakley said.Kinder said they have worked with a couple hundred veterans so far, mostly with private doctors.Army veteran Steven Padilla served in Iraq. In 2009, he was tasked with looking for roadside bombs. During one mission, he saw a friend get blown up by an IED.“I was supposed to be in the truck,” he said. Padilla said he got switched to a different one 15 minutes prior to the blast. “With my therapist, we found that was kind of my triggering point for PTSD,” Padilla said.According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, up to 20 percent of those who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year. He went through the WAVi test using the EEG during a demonstration at Cal State San Marcos. “His brain voltage was a little on the low side,” Oakley said after the test. “His brain speed was a little on the slow side.” Neither of those things surprised Padilla because of his past experiences. He sees a benefit to using the technology on members of the military.“I also think it would [have been] beneficial for my PAs and the doctors that were seeing me to possibly help me before I hit that wall,” Padilla said. He believes the test would also help in the long run with treatments and filing disabilities.The FDA has cleared the technology. It is not always covered by insurance.“If we can track 500 people over three to four years of deployment, then that’s the data set we’re looking for,” Oakley said. “I really think it’s important for you to have a stable and successful career, you need to be at your best. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Fire-Rescue chaplain found himself in need after flames ripped through his apartment in Old Town.Father David Fucci was with a friend last Thursday night when he got a call."My neighbor calls and says, 'Your apartment is on fire'," said Father Fucci.As he raced home, a mix of feelings washed over him. For about seven years, he's served as a volunteer chaplain, consoling victims during tragedy."That night, it felt surreal. Almost like an out-of-body experience. Normally I'm the one driving to the scene, thinking about what I can say," said Father Fucci.Instead, he could only watch as flames claimed his home. "Just kept thinking, don't let it spread to any other apartments and thankfully, it didn't," said Father Fucci.Then, something remarkable happened. As word spread of whose apartment it was, some familiar faces began appearing, including five other volunteer chaplains and a battalion chief."They took the time to put a hand on my shoulders. I knew I was blessed," said Father Fucci.Father Fucci found himself the person receiving comfort. "Sometimes those that give, it's hard to receive ... the compassion, love and help. You learn to let go," said Father Fucci.In the end, the apartment was declared a total loss. Amid the ashes, Father Fucci found something that survived."I found a picture of Mom and Dad. According to San Diego Police, the crash happened near Rosecrans Street and Laning Road around 5:17 p.m. Police say the victim, only described as a man in his 60s, was crossing the street in a designated crosswalk when the driver of a car turned left and hit the man.
