A man convicted in the 1971 Black Liberation Army assassination of two NYPD officers will be released on parole in October, the widow and daughter of NYPD Patrolman Joseph Piagentini told Scripps station WPIX-TV.A state source confirmed the decision late Tuesday afternoon, saying 68-year-old Anthony Bottom, who now goes by Jalil Abdul Mutaqim, has been granted "an open release date of October 20, 2020 or earlier."Bottom's been in state prison since 1977, more than 43 years."I am very angry," widow Diane Piagentini said about the decision.Piagentini accused Bottom of being the most ruthless of the killers, who lured the two patrolmen, one Black and one White, to Harlem with a phony 911 call. Both NYPD officers were fathers.The three BLA members had come to New York from California specifically to assassinate police officers.When the officers responded to the housing project, they were ambushed from behind with a fusillade of bullets.Bottom shot Piagentini’s partner, 33-year-old officer Waverly Jones, first. Jones, who was Black, was shot five times."He (Bottom) shot him in the head and down his spine," Diane Piagentini recalled.Piagentini said Bottom then turned his gun on her 27-year-old husband, who had 22 bullet holes in his body when he was pronounced dead.“He (Bottom) used Joe's gun to complete the killing because they were running out of bullets," Piagentini said of her husband’s death.Two years ago, Piagentini had unsuccessfully fought the controversial release of Bottom's accomplice, Herman Bell.Parole commissioners at the time were staying true to an Executive Order from Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2011, which told the board to be "forward thinking" and focus more on a prisoner's rehabilitation instead of the original crime.During Bell's later parole hearings, he showed remorse.The third convicted killer, Albert Washington, had died in prison.Bottom has been in police custody for more than 49 years, ever since his arrest in California in August 1971. He was sent to New York State prison in 1977.A Refinery29 article published earlier this year said he was diagnosed with COVID-19 during the pandemic.A Sullivan County judge ordered a new hearing for Bottom in August. The prisoner appeared before the parole board on Sept. 11.Diane Piagentini had written to the board in August this year, begging for Bottom not to be released."He's a BLA militant," she said. "He wants to kill cops. He has not been rehabilitated."Piagentini wasn't allowed to face parole commissioners because of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.Despite a move to release elderly prisoners during this pandemic, Piagentini said she doesn't believe that's the motivation for Bottom's release."It has nothing to do with COVID. It has nothing to do with his age."Patrolman's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch, issued a statement to PIX11 Tuesday evening slamming the Parole Board decision, saying laws and mandates from Governor Cuomo and the state legislature have allowed for the latest in a long line of cop killers getting released."They knew that changing the parole guidelines would unleash more vicious killers like Anthony Bottom back onto our streets," Lynch said. "They have chosen to stand with the murderers, cold-blooded assassins, and radicals bent on overthrowing our society. We have now seen 16 cop-killers released in less than three years. An FDA advisory committee is backing a treatment meant to help people with peanut allergies. It still hasn't been federally approved but researchers are hopeful about it because it has the potential to help more than 1 million kids and teens who suffer from peanut allergies. The treatment comes in the form of a capsule. The drug is called Palforzia. It's not meant to be a total cure but rather a treatment that can help children build up a tolerance and reduce their allergic reaction. One teen that’s been part of the testing started off the trial with just three milligrams of a peanut — that's equivalent to just one one-hundredth of a peanut! Nina Nichols didn't have a reaction until she consumed 300 milligrams. She is in a controlled environment where doctors can jump in and help her when needed. Researchers will increase her dosage to build up tolerance every two weeks. “I never thought that I could … tolerate the equivalent of one peanut,” Nichols said. “That's just crazy to me because I started off reacting to one one-fiftieth of a peanut. You can't even cut that up yourself.” Nichols will be part of a food challenge in December where doctors give her up to 2,000 milligrams of peanuts. If she passes that round, she'll move on to real foods to see how she reacts to different elements of a peanut. Allergy expert Tonya A. Winders says the decision is monumental because there have been no FDA approved treatments for peanut allergies before. However, she does warn it may not be for everyone. “Is it truly that they want to avoid those accidental exposures of peanut? Exterminators are finding COVID control’s a growing new business.Businesses are getting more aggressive about keeping space for workers and customers sanitized and safe.Truly Nolen Pest Control realized it already had an effective COVID killer it had been using to clean up after rat infestations.Mark Ringlestetter with Truly Nolen says, “So at that point, we decided to build a program that would be good for sanitizing surfaces.”So Truly Nolen worked out procedures for a program called Truly Sanitized, developed training and pushed out a new product. Other pest control companies have gone into COVID control too.Right now Ringlestetter says Truly’s charging about two hundred dollars an hour.Ringlestetter says, “Let's take a call center for instance, and you go in and it's ready to go and then you know there's somebody there and you're doing desktops and wiping down keyboards and, you know, creating hard surfaces on chairs then it could go relatively quickly we're moving around a lot of things and we're doing a lot of prep work in advance that, then, that certainly would slow it down.”The product does not have a long term germ killing effect but Truly Nolen’s working on a process that will because even if COVID-19 doesn’t last our extra interest in sanitizing probably will.“I would imagine that it's changed everyone's perception of how, how to protect yourself even against things like the common, the common cold or even the flu. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias.The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently.The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash.
