Mere hours after 11 people were killed by a suspect anti-Semite in the Pittsburgh area on Saturday, a haunted house located less than a three-hour drive away hosted an annual promotion known as "Swastika Saturday."After word of the promotion drew criticism from the public, the Haunted Hoochie located in Pataskala, Ohio was unwavering in its defense of the promotion. "It's a symbol used for love stolen and used for hate ... it’s how nationalism works," the haunted house said on its Facebook page in response to criticism. "Interesting how suicide scenes murder and abortions is all ok but please dont (sic) wear a symbol. It maybe to much," the Haunted Hoochie posted in another comment. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Haunted Hoochie has run the Swastika Saturday promotion for 28 years. After two days of criticism, the Haunted Hoochie released a statement acknowledging it had made a mistake.  972

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — Chief of Police Robert J. Schroeder is declaring a state of emergency for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) as they wait for Attorney General Daniel Cameron's decision whether or not to indict the officers in the Breonna Taylor case. The department has canceled all off days and vacation requests until further notice."The public may also see barriers being staged around downtown, which is another part of our preparations," Sgt. Lamont Washington said in the statement. "It is important to note that the AG has no timetable for the announcement."Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical worker, was killed by Louisville police serving a "no-knock" narcotics search warrant at her apartment. They found no drugs in her home. The city announced a settlement with the Taylor family last week that included a million payment and changes to department policies. An officer was shot during the raid by Taylor's boyfriend, who has said he thought he was defending against a home invasion. The boyfriend was initially charged, but those charges were later dropped. The Louisville Metro Police Department fired one of the officers involved, Brett Hankison, in June, saying he violated procedures by showing "extreme indifference to the value of human life." The other officers involved in the case — Jon Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove — have been placed on administrative reassignment."To ensure we have the appropriate level of staffing to provide for public safety services and our policing functions, effective immediately the LMPD will operate under the emergency staffing and reporting guidelines as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Plan, and collective bargaining agreements until further notice," a memo sent Monday to all personnel states.A handful of buildings around Louisville have been identified as potential places for "backlash" if a decision is announced this week. Windows have been boarded up at the Gene Snyder U.S. Courthouse & Customhouse. The courthouse is closed this week according to an official order, with planned court business rescheduled or moved online. This story originally reported by Jordan Mickle on LEX18.com. 2221

Michigan's Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, announced Friday a ban on the open carry of firearms on Election Day in polling places, clerk's offices and and absent voter counting boards.Local law enforcement agencies will enforce the ban statewide.“Fair, free and secure elections are the foundation of our democracy,” Benson said in a press release. “I am committed to ensuring all eligible Michigan citizens can freely exercise their fundamental right to vote without fear of threats, intimidation or harassment. Prohibiting the open carry of firearms in areas where citizens cast their ballots is necessary to ensure every voter is protected.”Secretary Benson issued the directive to all clerks stating that, “The presence of firearms at the polling place, clerk’s office(s), or absent voter counting board may cause disruption, fear, or intimidation for voters, election workers, and others present."Benson directed, “[t]he open carry of a firearm is prohibited in a polling place, in any hallway used by voters to enter or exit, or within 100 feet of any entrance to a building in which a polling place is located.”Attorney General Dana Nessel said, “Michigan voters have the right to vote in person on Election Day free from threat and intimidation. An armed presence at the polls is inconsistent with our notion of a free democracy. I stand with the Secretary in her commitment to ensure that every eligible voter who wants to vote in person can do so safely and without fear or intimidation.”This story originally reported on wxyz.com. 1554

Mark Zuckerberg has a clear message for Congress in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal: It's my fault. The Facebook CEO will take the blame for mistakes that led to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and lay out steps taken to prevent it from happening again, according to a copy of Zuckerberg's remarks as prepared for delivery to one of the committees before which he will be testifying. "It's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well. That goes for fake news, foreign interference in elections, and hate speech, as well as developers and data privacy," Zuckerberg said in the prepared remarks, which were released by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Monday."We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake. It was my mistake, and I'm sorry. I started Facebook, I run it, and I'm responsible for what happens here."Zuckerberg is set to appear before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees on Tuesday afternoon followed by a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on Wednesday morning.  1135
