SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 13-year-old Tierrasanta boy is battling for his life after family members say he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.A week ago Sunday, Grant Eyles started throwing up while his mother drove him and his siblings back from Los Angeles.  He quickly developed a fever, but didn't get worse until Thursday, when he lost mobility on his right side and became confused.His mother says a battery of tests pointed to bacterial meningitis, where membranes around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed, and it started with a common ailment."It was a complication essentially from a sinus infection.  The infection breached the sinus cavity and went into the brain," said family friend Vanessa Bredehoft.Over the weekend, seizures forced doctors to place Grant in a medically induced coma.  Grant remains in critical condition.County health officials say many strains of bacterial meningitis do not require an alert for person-to-person prevention, and this appears to be one of those cases.A fundraiser dubbed "Dance for Grant" is scheduled for March 3rd from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Studio K Dance and Fitness.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family's expenses. 1221

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A federal judge has ordered the San Diego Police Department to stop citing people for living in their vehicles.The decision comes after a lawsuit was filed against the city by a group of homeless people and their advocates.On Tuesday, United States District Judge Anthony Battaglia agreed with the plaintiff’s argument that the city’s municipal code was too vague in defining what constitutes habitation of a vehicle.Tristia Bauman, an attorney with the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty which helped work on the case told 10News, “we are very happy and pleased that the judge understood what we were arguing.”However, that was only one half of the lawsuit. The other half targeted the city’s municipal ordinance that outlaws RV parking from 2-6a.m. Known as the Nighttime RV Ordinance, or Oversized Vehicle Ordinance (OVO), the judge denied the request to enjoin it, saying the same argument did not apply.In the decision, Battaglia wrote “while the court sympathies that this Ordinance leaves Plaintiffs with nowhere to park between these hours and is decidedly unfair, the law is not ambiguous, unclear or vague in any way.”A spokesperson for city attorney Mara Elliot declined to comment beyond saying they “will review the ruling and advise our client.”An early neutral evaluation conference had been scheduled for Thursday with all the parties. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A female sea lion Monday wandered onto the streets of Point Loma, prompting spectators to gather and springing a rescue team into action.According to a passerby, the sea lion was spotted in the middle of Garrison Street around 4 p.m.According to crews, the sea lion would’ve had to cross Rosecrans Street to get to Garrison. Rescuers from SeaWorld responded to the scene, adding that the sea lion appears health and at a normal body weight, but they’ll need to further examine her to learn more.SeaWorld also said it’s unusual for a sea lion to wander that far away from the bay, but the animals have been found on porches, inside hotels and on driveways. 683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Exercise has been one of the most effective stress relievers during the pandemic, but it has also been a challenge for some people to find a way to do it. That's where Mike Cothrine comes in. He started Mike's Fit Family about eight years ago to teach teachers free of charge about how to achieve a healthy body and healthy mind."A lot of these ladies had never exercised before in their life," he says. "A lot of them were just happy that somebody cared about them, cared enough to take care of them the way they take care of so many."The idea is to get teachers moving so they can do the same for their students.Mike says, "They started to really feel the power, and started feeling themselves and that energy translated to the kids."Preschool teacher Sofia Martinez who teaches at VIP Village Preschool in Imperial Beach has lived those positive effects."My stress levels were lower, it helped me sleep at night," and she says, "I went down from a size 12 to a size 6."Sofia says the kids love the workouts and while they catch on quickly, they're not the only ones."We saw the effects on the children in the classroom and then it was starting to trickle into the homes and the moms wanted to join," she says.Mike's approach is holistic. He also teaches stress relief and nutrition. When you meet him it becomes immediately clear why he's effective. He exudes energy and a half. He says his inspiration comes from his childhood in St. Louis. What his family lacked in means, they made up for in love. So with his fitness background, he wanted to give back to those who also lack the means.He says, "That's the core value of myself and my team, we love you up."Mike was traveling across San Diego county helping 20 different school district groups when the pandemic hit. So, in his can-do fashion, he took his classes virtual. Forty live virtual classes a week from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. He asks those who can to pay so he can continue to give to others who can't. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bluff that overlooks Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas is on the brink of collapsing, which could mean changes for the walking trail that leads visitors down to the beach. The City of Encinitas says the bluff is at risk. There is a low-lying failure and the bluff could fall, taking the walking trail with it.“We’ve been told by our experts that there is a chance that the slide could happen at any time,”says Brenda Wisneski, Developmental Services Director for the City of Encinitas. Visitors at Beacon’s Beach say they feel the walking trail makes the beach different from others. “It’s one of my favorite beaches in all of San Diego. A part of that is because of the access, this trail is highly unique and it's not stairs,” says Mark Tayer. The city has a proposal to add a staircase south of the entry to the trail.“That is the most safe, the most secure. It requires a minimal amount of stability at the base of it,” says Wisneski.Wisneski says the city also has plans to move the parking lot back from the failure area. This could mean fewer parking spaces for visitors. The city hopes to begin construction in the fall of 2019. The proposal will go to the planning commission next. The trail will stay there until it poses a safety issue to visitors. On Wednesday, the City of Encinitas will have an open house where members of the community can voice their concerns.
