The coronavirus pandemic has been responsible for more police officer deaths in the line of duty than any other cause combined in 2020, according to a non-profit dedicated to fallen police officers.According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 101 police officers across the country have died after contracting COVID-19 while on the job. Eighty-two other police officers have been killed by other causes in the line of duty in 2020.A second non-profit, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), lists around 110 officer deaths linked to COVID-19.Both Officer Down and NLEOMF only count officers who were known to contract the virus while in the line of duty and review each case before adding it to their count. Officer Down says it is reviewing an additional 150 fatal cases of COVID-19 that may be added to the count in the future."By the end of this pandemic, it is very likely that COVID will surpass 9/11 as the single largest incident cause of death for law enforcement officers," Officer Down executive director Chris Cosgriff told The Washington Post.Officer Down reports that 73 police officers died on Sept. 11, 2001 in the terrorist attacks, and more than 300 have died of cancer linked to recovery efforts in the years since.According to NLEOMF, the state with the most police officer deaths linked to COVID-19 is Texas, where 24 officers have died since the pandemic began. Another 12 police have died after contracting the virus in nearby Louisiana. Officer Down also reports that non-coronavirus related police officer deaths in the line of duty are down in 2020, despite widespread civil unrest. Thirty-one police have died from gunfire this year, the second-leading cause of death among officers in the line of duty. Another four officers have died as a result of "inadvertent" gunfire.President Donald Trump has repeatedly pushed the narrative that police officers across the country are under "assault" by left-wing activists throughout the 2020 presidential campaign.Earlier this year, Trump signed the Safeguarding America's First Responders Act of 2020, which offers federal benefits to the families of police officers killed by COVID-19. 2187

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu province claimed more lives as the country's Health Ministry announced on Thursday a new death in the city of Mabalako. At least 37 people have died so far in this latest outbreak, the 10th for country.Ebola cases have also been reported in the towns of Beni, Butembo, Oicha, Musienene and Mandima, according to Congo's Health Ministry.A total of 44 cases of hemorrhagic fever have been reported in the region, of which 17 are confirmed and 27 are probable, the ministry said in a statement Thursday. An additional 54 suspected cases are under investigation, the ministry said.On Tuesday, the World Health Organization confirmed that the latest cases in Congo's North Kivu province are part of the Zaire strain of the virus and that there is no link to a separate outbreak, which occurred in the western Equateur province that has since been declared over."It's good news and it's very bad news," WHO Deputy Director-General for Emergency Preparedness and Response Peter Salama told journalists in Geneva, after the new cases were first confirmed."The bad news is that this strain of Ebola carries with it the highest case-fatality-rate of any of the strains of Ebola, anywhere above 50% and higher, according to previous outbreaks," he said. "So, it's the most-deadly variant of the Ebola virus strains that we have, that's the bad news. The good news is that we do have -- although it's still an investigational product -- a safe and effective vaccine, that we were able to deploy last time around."According to WHO, this outbreak, which is in an active conflict zone, will be more complicated to contain than any that came before.Experts believe an experimental vaccine, known as rVSV-ZEBOV, made a difference in containing the earlier outbreak and vaccinations are under way in North Kivu, WHO said. A total of 3,220 doses of the vaccine are currently available in Congo and supplementary doses have been requested, WHO said.First line health workers, who had been in contact with people who were confirmed cases of Ebola, were the first to be vaccinated, WHO said."Vaccines are an important tool in the fight against Ebola," Congo's Health Minister, Oly Ilunga, said on Wednesday. "This is why it has been a priority to move them rapidly into place to begin protecting our health workers and the affected population."North Kivu province is among Congo's most populated provinces, with eight million inhabitants, according to WHO and UN. Its capital is the city of Goma. The region has been experiencing intense insecurity and a worsening humanitarian crisis, with over one million internally displaced people and a continuous outflow of refugees to neighboring countries, including Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania.WHO is working with partners in the local communities to provide information to residents on how to protect themselves from the deadly virus and answer their questions -- steps that are crucial to control an outbreak, said WHO.Congo's Health Ministry announced on August 1 that a cluster of new Ebola cases have been confirmed, just days after it declared an outbreak in Equateur province that claimed 33 lives had ended. That outbreak was the ninth recorded outbreak that Congo has seen since the virus was first discovered in 1976. 3324

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was simply trying to warn Americans about the dangers posed by ticks and the diseases they spread. Instead, they ended up unintentionally ruining some of their followers' appetites.Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise, so the CDC has been pushing Americans to check for ticks after spending time outdoors. On Friday, the agency reminded its followers just how small those the pests can be, tweeting two photos of a poppy seed muffin."Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed. Can you spot all 5 ticks in this photo?" the CDC tweeted.  591

The Florida Senate on Monday passed Senate Bill 7026, The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act — a bill that raises the minimum purchasing age for a firearm to 21 and sets a program that allows for armed librarians, coaches and counselors. The bill now moves to the Florida House. It's not immediately clear when the House will take up the measure. The legislation works to address the issues presented by the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, including firearm and school safety, and community mental health resources. The bill includes the following provisions:Mental HealthIn the area of mental health the legislation makes significant changes to keep firearms out of the hands of those suffering from mental illness: 800

The clock is ticking for restaurants across the country that are starving for cash and desperate for another round of aid from the federal government, as an estimated 16,000 restaurants have already closed since the COVID-19 outbreak began. For Kari Kuelzer, who owns Grendel's restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the burden of keeping her small business open in particularly heavy. This dive bar located just blocks away from Harvard University was first opened by her parents in 1971 and has been a fixture for both students, locals and tourists who visit the area. But without another round of federal aid, Kuelzer is uncertain what the future of Grendel's looks like."The dominoes are going to fall. Without some kind of support, some kind of stimulus, all facets of the economy are going to struggle and it’s needless," she said while standing in the kitchen of Grendel's.Like restaurant owners around the country, this 50-year-old business owner has tried to get creative, from outdoor screened-in pods for dining to a new line of to-go cocktails and trail mix. Kuelzer knows, though, mixed drinks aren’t going to keep her afloat forever."We need more forgivable loans," she said.Politicians in Washington are at a stalemate over another round of funding, something especially troubling to Kuelzer, who saw an immediate impact from those first round of stimulus checks."The moment people started getting their unemployment stimulus checks, we saw an uptick in business,” she recalled. “The minute it went away, we saw it fall down.”Sean Kennedy with the National Restaurant Association says Congress needs to step in to help the nation's restaurants that employ nearly 15.6 million people across the country."The restaurant industry is in a unique challenge. We were the first to shut down and we’ll be the last to recover,” Kennedy said. “What’s clear is we need a more long-term, far-reaching approach from the federal government or restaurants are going to survive.”Historically, restaurants have the lowest amount of cash on hand compared to any industry in the country. Most restaurants only have enough cash to get by for 16 days, and nationwide, more than 100,000 restaurants have had to shut down for a second time."We’ve lost more jobs and more revenue than any of industry. That needs to be an alarm bell," Kennedy said.As for restaurant owners like Kuelzer, she'll keep trying to reinvent a recipe for survival, knowing her family's legacy is on the line."We really will need to have some assurances; we’ll get some government assistance," she said. 2576
