ROME (AP) — After months in a Rome jail, a trial has begun for a pair of schoolmates from California who are accused of murdering an Italian policeman during vacation in Italy. The first hearing, held Wednesday, is expected to deal with procedural manners. Carabinieri paramilitary officer Mario Cerciello Rega was unarmed and on plainclothes assignment when he was stabbed 11 times near the Americans’ hotel in the early hours of July 26, 2019. Prosecutors have alleged that Finnegan Lee Elder, now 20, thrust a 7-inch attack-style knife repeatedly into the 35-year-old officer, while Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, now 19, scuffled nearby with the officer's partner.Prosecutors believe the suspects attacked the officers to avoid arrest after attempting to buy drugs in Rome’s trendy Trastevere area. The defendants have said they're innocent. They say they acted in self-defense, believing the officers were ill-intentioned. The circumstances that led to the officer’s death remain unclear, but there’s overwhelming evidence against the suspects, including the murder weapon that was found in their possession, 1121
A federal judge in New York on Wednesday will field another clash over House Democrats' pursuit of President Donald Trump's financial records. The hearing, regarding subpoenas sent to two banks that handled Trump accounts for years, comes the same week that a judge in Washington, DC, said an accounting firm would have to comply with a subpoena from Congress, knocking down Trump's legal challenge within days of hearing arguments in the case. Trump's legal team appealed on Tuesday, but the Memorial Day subpoena date still stands because the appeals court has not yet intervened.A major question is how long Trump's challenges will take to proceed through the courts -- and whether the President could delay the subpoenas through his 2020 re-election campaign. The two court cases over House subpoenas, running closely in tandem, represent a major attempt by Trump to prevent Congress from reaching his personal and business records. The House of Representatives has also requested Trump's tax returns from the IRS, and Democrats in the House and the Senate are pursuing another court case that may allow them to look into the President's business records for signs of foreign influence. In the New York case, the House Financial Services and Intelligence committees requested a large swath of Trump family and business records from Deutsche Bank and Capital One bank in April, saying they need the records to consider banking policy revisions and to investigate the President's financial tangles with foreign powers, such as Russia.Trump's private legal team argues that the records requests violate his and his family's privacy and have no legislative purpose. The judge in New York, Edgardo Ramos, an Obama appointee, is unlikely to make a final ruling during Wednesday's hearing, which begins at 2:30 p.m. It's also not clear yet whether the judge will want to handle the case in stages, as is typical -- a tactic the judge in DC rejected, as it would have effectively allowed Trump to further delay his accountant's response to the subpoena. 2057
A jury has found Max Harris not guilty of involuntary manslaughter charges in the 2016 fire at Oakland's Ghost Ship warehouse, according to CNN affiliate KGO. The jury failed to reach a verdict for Derick Almena and a mistrial was declared.Prosecutors alleged that Almena and Harris, who helped collect rent and acted as creative director for the art collective housed at the 10,000-square-foot facility, were responsible for the deaths resulting from the blaze.Almena and Harris faced up to 39 years in prison had the nine-woman, three-man jury finds them guilty on all counts. Their trial began in May and deliberations began last month. It was one of the deadliest nightclub fires in US history and the deadliest American nightclub fire since The Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island, erupted in flames in 2003.Almena, 49, and Harris, 29, allowed more than two dozen people to live in the dilapidated building, stacked large quantities of flammable materials from floor to ceiling and deceived officials and building owners, 1041
A Hollywood filmmaker who has produced a number of major films has been charged with fraud, the Department of Justice said late last week.William Sadleir, whose credits include the 2019 Matthew McConaughey film “Serenity,” and the 2017 Halle Berry movie “Kidnap,” is accused of illegally taking .7 million in Paycheck Protection Program funds. The PPP was implemented earlier this year to help small businesses make payroll amid the spread of COVID-19. He was also accused of being involved in a massive wire fraud scheme. The Department of Justice said that Sadleir used funds from the PPP for personal and non-business-related expenses, including personal credit cards and a car loan. The DOJ said he allegedly transferred over half the money to a personal bank account and began using and attempting to use the funds to pay off personal credit card debts totaling more than ,000 and a car loan totaling approximately ,000, among other personal expenses. Court documents said that Sadleir claimed that the funds would be used to support payroll expenses for three film production and distribution companies.“This defendant allegedly used Paycheck Protection Program loans to pay off his personal credit card debts and other personal expenses, rather than using the funds for legitimate business needs,” said Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “As the department has made clear, those who defraud the PPP to line their own pockets at the expense of the American people will be brought to justice.”Sadleir faces federal charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, false statements to a financial institution, and false statements to the Small Business Association.Meanwhile, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York said last week that was allegedly involved in a million wire fraud scheme. Among the allegedly fraudulent activity, he is accused of embezzling approximately million of investor funds from his film company.“As alleged, William Sadleir orchestrated a massive fraud, embezzling approximately million of investor funds from his film company to pay for a Beverly Hills estate, among other fraudulent acts. Thanks to the dedicated work of our law enforcement partners at the FBI, Sadleir will be held accountable for his behind-the-scenes misdeeds.” 2355
