PARIS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The Paris-based Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday welcomed China's announcement of increasing the exchange rate flexibility of its currency yuan.The move was helpful not only to China's sustainable growth but also the world economy, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria said."A combination of sustained fiscal expansion, continued structural reform and exchange rate flexibility, should provide a strong contribution from China to the achievement of a strong, sustained, and balanced growth of the world economy," Gurria said in a statement.Richard Herd, an economist heading the OECD's China and Asia Unit, said it was impossible to achieve yuan appreciation over one night."The policy is not a political gesture; the policy is a sound economics-based effort," Herd said in an interview with Xinhua, rebutting reports interpreting the statement as just lip service.China's central bank announced over the weekend it would push forward reform of the yuan exchange rate and ruled out a one-off revaluation.

HONG KONG, June 21 (Xinhua) -- After working in Beijing for 10 months, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman said here Monday that trust was very important and was the fuel that powered the U. S.-China relations."Sometimes the tank is full, (and) sometimes it draws down. When it draws down like what happened early this year, the relations become sort of rocky," said Huntsman, who was invited by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce as one of its 150th anniversary speakers.Huntsman, who became U.S. Ambassador to China in August last year, gave five observations on the U.S.-China relations.Firstly, the mandarin-speaking U.S. diplomat said there were a lot less dramas in the U.S.-China relations than many people might imagine despite the occasional alarmist headlines."If you view the U.S.-China relations with a distance, you get the sense that the wheel is coming off the bus. But when in the middle of the relations, you would get less drama," he said."There is more respect ... (and) the ability to communicate on the very very sensitive issues. I don't have a panic button, no restart button. The relations have ups and downs, but overall relations are strong, stable and resilient," Huntsman said.Secondly, he said there are areas of difference but there are many more areas of convergence and what unites us is a lot more important than what divides the U.S. and China."Our success is increasingly tied to identifying our shared interests and to working towards practical solutions," said the 50- year-old diplomat.Thirdly, Huntsman said the two nations were not seeking to " impose our world views on one another" or "to remake one another."The U.S. and China would seek to understand each other better, to continue dialogues and to improve future prospects, he said.Fourthly, Huntsman said while hot political issues often grab public attention, the foundation of the U.S.-China relations was largely commerce and trade.Back in 1974 and 1975, two-way annual trade between the U.S. and China was somewhere between 500 million U.S. dollars to 1 billion U.S. dollars, but this year the U.S.-China trade would reach 400 billion U.S. dollars, making it the world's largest commercial relations, according to Huntsman.Even in the sensitive areas of imbalance, it began to narrow, he said. NANJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- A powerful explosion at a factory in eastern China's Nanjing City Wednesday has left at least 10 people dead and hundreds injured, including 14 critically, the city government said.Officials of the government of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, told a press conference Wednesday evening that 10 people were killed and 14 others suffered serious injuries after the blast at 10:11 a.m. ripped through an abandoned plastics factory in northern Nanjing's Xixia District.Further, more than 120 people have been hospitalized, according to the official.The death toll, which is based on the number of bodies so far recovered, could climb as rescuers are still clearing the explosion site and some injured people are reported to be in very critical condition.The blast was caused by a gas leak after a propylene pipeline was damaged as workers dismantled factory buildings of the Nanjing No. 4 Plastics Factory, said a statement from the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS).The rescue headquarters say an excavator owned by Yangzhou Hongyuan Construction and Development Co., Ltd. hit a a pipe of 159 mm in diameter.The gas leak started at 9:56 a.m. and explosion occurred at 10:11 a.m.Gas supply was cut off a minute later, said Liu Zhaohua, deputy head of Nanjin's work safety bureau.The excavator operator, whose identity was not revealed, has been held by police for investigation.The explosion occurred when a motorist started a car engine at the scene, igniting the leaking gas, the SAWS statement said, without saying if the motorist was among the victims.Some rescuers and repairmen who had come to handle the gas leak may have died in the explosion, the headquarters said.
