Aerospace experts saved the country's first ever manned space mission as the spaceship faced a potentially lethal impact while flying through the communications blackout area before landing, the country's space authorities revealed yesterday.China became only the third country to put a man in space, after the former Soviet Union and the United States, when Yang Liwei orbited the Earth in 2003 in what was a resounding success for its space program.But Xinhua News Agency reported that this was almost not so, quoting the Xi'an Satellite Monitor and Control Center's report on the dangers the Shenzhou V rocket faced."Yang lost every means to communicate with the ground command and control headquarters as he entered the ( Earth atmosphere), which fell in the worst-case scenario prepared by the space mission team," Xinhua quoted Dong Deyi, head of the center, as saying.Communications go down when any spacecraft re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, but in Yang's case, "even radar could not capture any signal from the returning module", Dong was quoted as saying. "After the Shenzhou V came out of the blackout area, the echo signals from the spaceship were still volatile, which sufficiently threatened the safe landing of astronaut Yang."Mission control promptly ordered optical guiding and tracking instead of a communication-guided landing, Dong was quoted as saying."Aerospace technologists used cinetheodolites (optical trackers) on the ground to measure the spacecraft's position and record movements. Precise positioning of the spacecraft enabled officers to properly control the slow-down parachute, which was vital to a soft landing."But the landing was 9 km east of the planned site, Dong said.China began its clandestine manned space program in 1992. The country has since spent at least 20 billion yuan (.64 billion) on the project and sent three astronauts into orbit.Dong also revealed that at least three orbiting satellites were malfunctioning during certain periods, but all had been salvaged by experts since October 2006.The Xi'an center, established on June 23, 1967, in the mountains of Northwest China, has monitored and controlled more than 100 satellites and the six Shenzhou spaceships. KHARTOUM: Chinese peacekeepers were on Wednesday awarded certificates of merit for their excellent performance during their eight-month term in Sudan, a Chinese officer said Thursday.Lieutenant General Jasbir Singh Lidder, commander of the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), presented Unit Citations to the engineering, transportation and medical contingents of Chinese peacekeeping troops, and Force Commander Commendations to 22 Chinese troops.The two certificates of merit are the highest honor awarded to peacekeepers from various contributing countries in Sudan, said the Chinese officer.The awards ceremony was held at the base of the Chinese peacekeeping troops in Wau, capital of West Bahr al-Ghazal state in southern Sudan, two weeks before their departure from Sudan to rotate with another batch of Chinese peacekeeping troops.Lidder said it was a great honor for him to serve with the Chinese peacekeepers as they were ending "their very successful term" in Sudan."During the past months, the three contingents of the Chinese peacekeeping troops have done a significant job to be a role model for professionalism, commitment and conduct," Lidder said.The Chinese peacekeepers had also maintained excellent relations with the contingents of other countries as well as the local population, the UNMIS commander said.Li Chengwen, the Chinese Ambassador to Sudan, congratulated all the three contingents, the 22 Chinese peacekeepers as well as the other officers and soldiers. China will gradually sell its planned 1.55 trillion yuan (3.6 billion) in special domestic bonds to finance its overseas investment agency, a senior central bank official was quoted on Monday as saying. The country's stock market has been hit by the bond issue plan, approved by China's parliament on Friday, as investors feared such a move would suck funds from the market. "The plan will be carried out gradually according to its monetary policy," Yi Gang, assistant governor of the People's Bank of China, told the Shanghai Securities News. Yi reiterated the Finance Ministry's view that the bond issue would have only a neutral impact on the domestic economy, the newspaper said. The Finance Ministry indicated on its Web site on Friday that it would issue the bonds directly to the central bank in exchange for part of the .2 trillion in foreign currency reserves under the central bank's control. No specific timetable was given for the sale of the bonds, but the increase in this year's debt ceiling suggests they will all be issued this year.

China will undertake nearly 10 percent of an international fusion-research project to be implemented this year.The project is called ITER and wants to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power - the energy of the sun or hydrogen bomb - for peaceful use."The project aims to find a shortcut to solve our energy shortage," Luo Delong, deputy director of the ITER China Office, said at the Oriental Science and Technology Forum held in Shanghai over the weekend.He said Chinese researchers will be in charge of producing various components of the project and escorting them into Cadarache in the south of France where the ITER's key equipment will be constructed.China will inject about one billion yuan (US7.5 million) into the project, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the overall ITER investment, officials said.Other partners in the project include the European Union, the United States, Japan, India and Russia.According to Zhang Jie, a fusion-power scientist of Jiao Tong University, researchers of universities in Shanghai, including Fudan and Donghua, are conducting fusion-related studies.China will further enhance its education in the area to lift the country's overall research power.The long-term objective of the research is to harness fusion nuclear energy to help meet the future energy needs of mankind, project officials said.The aim of ITER is to show fusion can be used to generate electrical power and do the preparation work to build and operate an electricity-producing plant.The key part of the project is to develop a viable fusion-power reactor.Scientists of ITER will test a number of key technologies, including the heating, control, diagnostic and remote maintenance that will be needed for a real fusion-power station, officials said.Local experts said fusion may produce dozens of times more energy than fission, which now directs most of the world's nuclear-power plants.Fission can only be caused by uranium. SHANGHAI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- A traditional commodity fair in east China, conventionally regarded as a barometer of the nation's foreign trade, reported less demands from American businessmen than expected, indicating a possible slowdown of Sino-U.S. trade.     The 18th East China Commodity Fair, an event held at the beginning of every year, reported around 1,600 American businessmen, far less than expected.     "The number of the American businessmen to the fair was only two thirds of those from the European Union, showing the deficient domestic demands of the United States," said Wang Qingjiang, an official with the fair.     "The subprime crisis in the United States has shown its influence on China's exports," he added.     The 5-day fair registered total business deals worth 583 million U.S. dollars between Chinese companies and the U.S. businessmen, a 1.5 percent dip from last year.     Deals worth more than 3.67 billion U.S. dollars were signed at the fair, a 3.52 percent growth from 2007.     Deals between Chinese companies and the European Union businessmen added up to 879 million U.S. dollars, a 9.5 percent growth compared with the last fair.     Chinese companies and the Japanese businessmen made deals worth906 million U.S. dollars, almost the same amount compared with last year.     The fair attracted more than 19,000 businessmen from 145 countries and regions around the world, with more than 60 percent from Asia.     According to experts, the fair could indicate the trend in China's foreign trade in 2008.
