There's growing concern among parents that the pandemic will impact development for their kids.“It hasn't just been COVID, right? We've learned, you know, our youngest children have learned to fear other human beings,” said Dr. Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek, Director of Temple University’s Infant Language Laboratory.Hirsh-Pasek is a professor of psychology and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. She describes the current environment as a “social hurricane.”Toddlers can't interact with each other and they pick up on the fear that their parents may have.“We may think that we hide all of this from our children, but a lot of times we don't,” said Hirsh-Pasek.She thinks most toddlers will recover in their developmental process. Eventually, they'll be back on playgrounds or in schools, learning and socializing with other kids and adults.But kids from families that have been more seriously impacted by the pandemic may struggle more, especially kids whose parents lost their jobs or who come from underserved communities that have been hit harder by the virus.“There will be some gaps they need to overcome, and I think we need to be prepared with mental professional to, to help all those children thrive,” said Hirsh-Pasek.As Hirsh-Pasek points out, history has taught us most kids are resilient. We've lived through other crises before.In the meantime, parents can help kids navigate how they're staying connected without face-to-face interactions. 1465

The mother of a 5-year-old boy who was allegedly murdered by his father has now also been arrested on a charge of child neglect. According to an affidavit, she was also at the home when the boy was killed. Joseph Ray Daniels was arrested and charged with one count of criminal homicide in the disappearance of his son, Joe Clyde. Court records revealed that the elder Daniels allegedly beat the young boy to death before disposing his body in a rural location.   Officials announced Monday night that Joe Clyde’s mother, 27-year-old Krystal Daniels, was also arrested.According to an affidavit, Krystal Daniels was home at the time her husband allegedly murdered their child, Joe Clyde and knew he disposed of the body.She “failed to report the abuse and resulting homicide” of the boy, the affidavit added. Krystal Daniels also allegedly "failed to report injuries, abuse and/or homicide, despite multiple opportunities."She’s scheduled to appear in court on Monday. 1030

Thousands of Americans descended upon Washington D.C. Friday for a "March on Washington." The event was organized following the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "It's just too much injustice," Beth Wagner, who traveled from New Jersey to participate in the march, said. Wagner has two black sons. "I am always in fear they could be at the wrong place at the wrong time," Wagner added. Andre Miller traveled from Portland, Oregon, with his 14-year-old son. Miller showed the scars he received after being recently shot by police with a tear gas canister. Miller came to D.C. for his son, who has been called the N-Word in school. "If my kids get called the N-word, we want a suspension or something," Miller said. Andre Junior says the speakers serve as motivation. "Just to hear their messages are so inspiring," Miller Junior added. The event was organized by Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III. Top health officials are considering “pooled testing” as a way to ramp up COVID-19 tests.Here's how it works:Instead of testing each sample individually, labs pool together a certain amount, like 10, in one tube with one test.If it's negative, you double check it, and then you're done.If there's a positive, you break it down either into smaller pools or individually for further testing.“So, there are advantages, mostly cost savings, that's the huge advantage of pooling, also the ability to go through a very large volume of specimens,” said Dr. Thomas Quinn, an infectious disease researcher at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious DiseasesQuinn worked in one of many labs that used the pooling technique during the HIV epidemic in the 1980s. He says the difference between then and now is the tests themselves.Pooling dilutes the samples. The HIV tests were very accurate, so that wasn't an issue, but with COVID-19, the tests aren't as reliable.The other problem is pooling takes more time in the lab, even with robotic equipment helping.“We need to get everyone tested and everyone wants to know what's the result of my test within 24 hours. That's very hard to do with pooling,” said Quinn.Quinn isn't recommending pooling for individual testing right now. He says it could be more useful in big surveys, when it's not an emergency. 1357
