SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there. We are so grateful," said Lee.Lee says she offered many of the donors meals, but many didn't accept, saying that's 'not the reason' they wanted to help out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections.In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags.It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. On the Nextdoor mobile app, ABC 10News found numerous examples of signs supporting presidential challenger Joe Biden stolen.Just south of Balboa Ave., Margo Thomas woke up Wednesday to her Biden/Harris yard sign gone."To me, it just feels like you’re stifling free speech," said Thomas.There is still no mistaking who Thomas is backing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - IKEA is recalling a type of candy sold at certain stores in California, including the San Diego location in Mission Valley.The Godis P?skkyckling marshmallow candy may be contaminated. The chain did not immediately release the source of the possible contamination but said the health risk is low.IKEA said the candy is a seasonal product and only 400 bags have been sold since it became available in February.If you bought the candy, you may return it to the nearest IKEA store for a full refund. 523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In just days, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine will go before a key group of scientific advisers to the Food and Drug Administration, and a San Diego doctor will be part of the process to cast an important vote.Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital, will serve as a voting member of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee or VRBPAC when the body meets Dec. 10 to publicly vet Pfizer’s COVID-19 candidate.Dr. Sawyer is also a professor of clinical pediatrics at UC San Diego. He has served before on this outside advisory committee to the FDA, but the stakes have never been so high.“I mean this is a tough decision,” he said in an interview Friday. “We're weighing the benefit of a vaccine against the risks. And with any new product, we don't know the risks and we have to estimate based on the data we have.”Dr. Sawyer said he received Pfizer’s full Phase 3 data Friday morning, making him one of the first Americans outside the FDA to see the full details of the company’s large-scale clinical trial. The FDA is expected to release the data to the general public by Tuesday, two days before the public meeting.Sawyer will be one of about 20 outside vaccine experts from around the country on VRBPAC. The FDA hasn’t yet released a full roster of the doctors and scientists who will take part. The independent advisory committee will hear comments from Pfizer and the FDA and listen to public input before voting on whether to recommend emergency authorization.The marathon meeting is expected to last up to nine hours.“The FDA counts on this advisory committee to be an independent group of people who are looking at the same information they looked at and asking us what our concerns are, or whether we reached the same conclusion that their staff have reached,” he said.The meeting comes on the heels of a study by Pew Research that found lingering skepticism of the vaccine. Just 60% of Americans planned to get vaccinated as of the survey released Monday.“I do think that's going to change once this committee meets and the data is made public and we can all talk together as a community about what we know about the safety, and what we don't know, frankly,” he said.Dr. Sawyer was a member of VRBPAC for four years and briefly served as the acting chair in 2017.The committee meets a few times each year to make recommendations on the annual flu vaccine and other drugs.The committee’s vote is not binding. The job of the outside advisers is to issue a recommendation and the FDA can overrule them, but the agency rarely does. From 2003 to 2019, VRBPAC made 105 recommendations. The agency fully implemented 84% of VRBPAC’s recommendations and partially implemented 10%, according to Union of Concerned Scientists.That means when the committee votes Thursday, it’ll carry a lot of weight. The FDA is expected to announce its final decision shortly after the vote, possibly within hours.Dr. Sawyer said the advisers will make a decision following the process they traditionally do, based on all the knowns and unknowns. “And we’re going to weigh that against what we're going through right now,” he said. “Our hospitals are getting overwhelmed.
