The Associated Press is reporting that six officers involved in the arrest of Freddy Gray — a young black man who died in the custody of Baltimore Police in 2015 — will not face federal charges.The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that the officers would not face charges from the federal government. Six officers were charged at the state level, three of which were acquitted. Federal prison officials in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Thursday, executed a Texas street-gang member for his role in the 1999 slayings of an Iowa religious couple. The case of 40-year-old Brandon Bernard was a rare execution of a person who was in his teens when his crime was committed. Bernard was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, the AP reported.He was 18 when he and four other teenagers abducted and robbed Todd and Stacie Bagley on their way from a Sunday service in Killeen, Texas. According to the Associated Press, reality TV star Kim Kardashian West had even asked President Trump to commute Bernard’s sentence to life in prison.Bernard's last words, which were directed to the Bagley family, were "I'm sorry," the AP reported.Four more federal executions, including one Friday, are planned in the weeks before President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. 1055

Not too long ago, to keep him company, a friend brought him a boy cat named Fluffy.Over the first few weeks they had together, Williams says he and Fluffy hit it off right away.“I looked at him and hey, I just fell in love with him,” said Williams.As it’s safe to say we all do with our pets, Williams talked to Fluffy quite a lot. When the senior got calls on his cellphone, he’d joke around with Fluffy then too.“The phone would ring, and I would say ‘ring-a-ding,’” said Williams. “And I didn’t know he’d pick up on it.”Then, a few days ago, Williams slipped and fell getting out of the shower. He couldn’t move.“My arm was pinned under me, and the hours kept going by,” said Williams. “16 hours…”From roughly 8 a.m. until midnight later that day, Williams laid in agony. The door was closed, and his Life Alert was in the other room on the charger. His phone was in the bathroom with him, but just out of reach on the counter.Lucky for Williams, Fluffy was in the room too. And whether or not he knew it, he’d been training Fluffy for this moment accidentally.“So I said ‘ring-a-ding Fluffy, you’re my only hope,’” Williams said, tearing up. “And he was. It wasn’t even five minutes later I felt something hit my hand. And I’m here because of it.”The cat had brought Williams his phone and he was able to dial 911.“I relive it a million times. What if he wouldn’t have been in there with me? I’d be dead today,” he added.Now Williams, who served with the U.S. Army in Korea, is fine – left only with some soreness and bumps and bruising. Students around the United States are walking out of class to demand tougher gun laws in response to last week's deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, but some schools are threatening them with harsh punishments.The Needville Independent School District in Texas issued a warning Tuesday that anyone who participated in a walkout or other political protest would be suspended for three days."Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved. All will be suspended for 3 days and parent notes will not alleviate the discipline," Superintendent Curtis Rhodes said in a statement posted on the Needville High School Facebook page.Rhodes said the Houston-area district would not tolerate any protests or demonstrations during school hours."A school is a place to learn and grow educationally, emotionally and morally. A disruption of the school will not be tolerated," he said.The letter was posted on the same day that a 14-year-old was arrested at Needville Junior High School and charged with making a terroristic threat.Survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland have been active in the week since the shooting -- holding rallies, being interviewed by national media and organizing a bus trip to the Florida State Capitol to meet with lawmakers.Students at other schools in Florida and across the United States have held rallies to show support.A school district in Waukesha, Wisconsin, sent a letter to parents telling them that the school district is not involved in a walkout that is scheduled for March 14 and that teachers and students would not be excused if they participate."Participation in a walkout is disruptive and against school regulations, and will subject students to disciplinary measures," Superintendent Todd Gray said in the letter.In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, Gray said the the original letter was designed to let parents know that the walkout next month was planned by an outside group with no connection to the school."At no time have we said students cannot make a statement peacefully while staying in school," Gray said, adding that he had not gotten requests to participate from any students or student groups."We acknowledge that individuals have a right to demonstrate to support a cause. The battle over MCAS flight paths continues. For years, residents have expressed concerns about noise, pollution and potential crashes. Earlier this month, councilwoman Barbara Bry wrote a letter to MCAS asking pilots ot adhere to flight corridors that avoid direct traffic over University City. Neighbors in the area are still coping from the 2008 crash that killed four people when a jet went spiraling into two homes. "We’ve already had one accident in UC years ago," said Don Hoetz. "Right below that flight path and we just don’t want to see that happen again."MCAS released a statement to 10news, saying in part;"All aircraft routes, including departures over University City, depend on a myriad offactors including weather, other air traffic, and the flight characteristics of the aircraft. In all cases, aircraft use navigable airspace in a manner authorized by the FAA."Colonel Charles Dockery responded to councilwoman Bry's letter Thursday morning. He reiterated that all of the flights they use are approved by the FAA and said they must prioritize safety over noise. 1089
