After smoking cigarettes for 15 years, Joe Vondruska decided to make a change in his life. “I have not smoked a combustible cigarette in over seven years. Knowing that, I wanted to spend the rest of my life healthy with my wife, I looked for an alternative to ingest my nicotine,” Joe Vondruska said.For him, that alternative was vaping. His wife Monica says the switch has been beneficial for the both of them.“I’m not smelling cigarette smoke in the morning when I wake up. I’m not hearing him cough and hack loogies off the front deck,” Monica Vondruska said.Monica says multiple people in her life have used vape products to quit traditional smoking. In fact, that’s one of the biggest reasons she and Joe decided to open a vape shop.“We all know that smoking kills, we’ve known that since the 60s and yet today we still have people smoking. In order for us to get that smoking rate down, there needs to be a viable option for people,” Monica Vondruska said.But is vaping a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes? Pulmonary Physician Jeff Sippel with UCHealth in Colorado says first you have to look at the differences between the two. “Smoking of tobacco and marijuana leaves has both dust particulate matter and oils – that’s the tar aspect that someone inhales. Whereas vaping is purified oil from a plant – it’s extracted from a plant,” Dr. Sippel said.According to Dr. Sippel, people who vape aren’t exposed to the harmful particles of combustible cigarettes. However, both products contain oils, which he says isn’t great for the lungs either. “Our lungs like water, our lungs don’t like oil. And so if we vape or smoke, and we get oil products into our lungs, that’s when we have problems,” Dr. Sippel said.Dr. Sippel says vape products often have more concentrated oils of flavoring, CBD, or THC, and that’s why we’re seeing some lung-related illnesses emerge. Consequently, Dr. Sippel says vaping is still a health risk and can’t be recommended by doctors as a good alternative to traditional smoking. Nevertheless, when you put the two side by side, he says there is more evidence to show combustible cigarettes are worse.“We could say that vaping is probably the lesser of two evils.” Dr. Sippel says it will take more time to really study the potential risks to vaping.“Lung cancer as an example takes 20 to 50 years for someone to have that condition related to smoking. So what we don’t know is what is the vaping risk going to look like 20 to 50 years from now,” Dr. Sippel said.He says e-cigarettes haven’t been around long enough for medical professionals to know the extent of their impact. But as a pulmonary physician, Dr. Sippel suggests staying away from both.“I think a goal for this whole category of smoking and vaping would be for somebody to go from their current state of affairs, to less, to zero. And ultimately a goal is zero cigarettes or zero vaping, because that’s in somebody’s health best interest,” Dr. Sippel said.The Vondruska family has witnessed some people achieving that goal with the help of vaping. ”We don’t mind if people get off vaping at all because we’re still a community and we’re still a family and they still drop in which is pretty neat. Probably one of the neatest things about opening a vape shop,” Monica Vondruska said.It’s that community the Vondruskas feel is necessary to help people quit their smoking habit if that’s what they desire. Whatever the case, they stick together like a family. “For years and years and years we’ve been demonized as smokers and kind of outcasted. And when you have a support system of ‘ok let’s step your nicotine down. If this is your goal, let’s do it’. A person who dropped a backpack and tried to jump a bike rack near the White House has been taken into custody by the Secret Service, the agency tweeted Wednesday."At approximately 2:45 pm an individual dropped a backpack and attempted to jump a bike rack along the sidewalk on Pennsylvania Ave. The individual was immediately taken into custody by Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers," the agency tweeted around 3 p.m. ET.Secret Service responded with an update about a half hour later that the backpack had been cleared, and that pedestrian traffic would soon reopen.It's unclear if the person detained was arrested or will face charges. 658

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, almost nothing feels normal. Simply walking out your home comes with new rules to follow. Now, filing taxes this year is causing some confusion. “Normally, busy season is a challenge in and of itself, but this has added many more layers,” said Elieen Sherr, with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.Sherr has had an increase number of people confused on whether they are supposed to file their income taxes now, or if the federal income tax deadline extension applies to them.“This all happened in the last few weeks, and the states, they were waiting for the IRS to come out with their guidance,” said Sherr. “At first, it was just payment relief. Then, it was filing and payment relief, so that was confusing.”Sherr explained, just shy of the normal tax deadline, there is now some clearer guidance.The federal government has extended it deadline for federal tax filing and payments to July 15, 2020. Many states have now moved their filing deadlines to match.However, in a few states like Mississippi, Virginia, and Idaho, you have to file earlier. The deadline is May 15 in Mississippi, June 1 for Virginia, and June 15 in Idaho.Differing state and federal deadlines have some wondering if you file your state return early can you file your federal at the later deadline?“Generally, you have to start with the federal, so you will have to start with the federal to get to a state return,” said Sherr.Some good news in that instance: if you owe money on your federal return, you won’t have to pay that until July 15. If you are someone who is getting money back, even better news, returns are being processed right now, without delays.“They want to get the money out to everybody, especially the refund,” Sherr explained. “They want to get it into the economy so they are doing the best they can.” 1862

A University of Utah senior missing for more than a week was last seen at a park where she met someone in a car, Salt Lake City police said.Mackenzie Lueck, 23, arrived at Salt Lake City International Airport on June 17 after visiting family.She then took a Lyft to Hatch Park in North Salt Lake, where she was last seen in the early-morning hours."Mackenzie was met at Hatch Park by an individual in a vehicle. The Lyft driver left Mackenzie at the park with that person and stated that Mackenzie did not appear to be in any type of distress," Assistant Police Chief Tim Doubt told reporters on Monday.Doubt said detectives are canvassing the area around the park and are looking for video surveillance. He said police have not yet confirmed the make or model of the car or obtained a description of the person."To date the family and her friends have not heard from her," Doubt said. Police confirmed she missed a flight to Los Angeles on the morning of June 23. He said Lueck, who lives in an apartment in Salt Lake City, also missed a midterm exam."At this time there is no evidence that any harm has come to her. However because of the circumstances of the case we want to make sure that she is all right."Police said Lyft and the Lyft driver have cooperated with the investigation. The Lyft driver confirmed the route Lueck took and said she met someone after she was dropped off.Lyft said that the route had no irregularities and ended at the destination Lueck entered. The driver continued providing rides immediately after the ride ended, the company said."We recognize how scary this must be for those who know and love Ms. Lueck," Lyft said. "The safety of our community is fundamental to Lyft and we are actively assisting law enforcement with their investigation."Authorities believe her phone has not been on since June 17. They haven't been able to find its location, police said.Police said that sometimes missing people don't want to be reached.
