LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona — Officials from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office say an 11-year-old boy shot and killed his grandmother then turned the gun on himself in Litchfield Park on Saturday evening. According to MCSO, just after 5 p.m., deputies received a call from a man near Litchfield Road and Wigwam Boulevard who reported that his grandson had shot and killed his wife, 65-year-old Yvonne Woodard and then shot and killed himself.The grandfather told deputies that he and his wife had full custody of their grandson. The couple reportedly asked the grandson to clean his room and pick up after himself throughout the day as he was "being stubborn about it."Officials say the two then sat down on their couch in the living room to watch television. The grandson then reportedly came up behind them and shot Yvonne in the back of the head with a gun that belonged to the grandfather. The grandfather then ran after the grandson but quickly returned to render aid to his wife. Moments later he reported that the grandson had then shot himself.At that point, the grandfather retrieved the gun and called 9-1-1. "In the preliminary stages of this investigation there had been no previous signs that the grandson might harm someone or himself and there was no cause for concern prior to this event," MCSO said in a news release. The investigation remains ongoing at this time. 1425

(KGTV) -- San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore asked the National Guard to support local law enforcement officers in keeping looters and rioters from destroying properties amid demonstrations against police brutality and racism.The City of La Mesa posted a message saying a portion of the guard would respond to the city Wednesday night.The new rules and assistance of the National Guard were requested in La Mesa after what started out as peaceful demonstrations turned violent Saturday night when several banks and vehicles were set on fire, and numerous businesses were ransacked.In a post on Twitter late Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office announced that 200 members of the California Army National Guard are in the county following a request from Gore. "They will work alongside law enforcement providing security to critical infrastructures (public buildings, courthouses, power grids, etc.) during the protests to prevent looting & arson," the sheriff's office said. "This mutual aide will help keep our communities safe while protecting everyone's right to protest."One hundred National Guard members were deployed to La Mesa, with the other 100 assigned to other parts of the county.The news comes as cities throughout the county enforce a days-long curfew. Wednesday night, the City of La Mesa is under a curfew from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. According to the city, the rule will be in effect through June 8. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A developer in La Mesa says multi-generational homes could be the key to helping solve San Diego's housing crisis.The Phair Company has plans to build 30 such homes on a 10-acre patch of land near Eastridge Drive. The development is called "La Mesa Summit Estates."The homes will feature an extra master-suite, with a bathroom, kitchenette and separate entry. Families with aging parents or adult children who live at home can use that suite to give them independence, while still keeping the family together."We heard from the community that they wanted to have this," says Austin Dias, one of the partners in the company.The Phair Company did four community meetings to help plan the development. The idea for multi-generational homes came from people who attended. They also heard that people wanted one-story homes to avoid going up and down stairs.After the meetings, the company changed their plans, downsizing the community from 39 to 30 homes and adjusting the floor plans. Now, the development will have 22 single story homes, and eight two-story homes. They range from 2,300 to 3,000 square feet."I love it," says Dr. Karen Childress-Evans, who lives across the street from the land. "It's very conscientious to how society is growing right now. Kids are moving back home, we're taking care of our parents. This is a safe alternative to sending them off someplace else."The company also thinks the cost savings will help in today's housing market."This is just part of what needs to happen in San Diego," says Dias. "It just makes sense to keep families together. "The company has an interest list of around 80 potential buyers. They expect it to grow as word gets out about the project.Dias told 10News he's heard of other companies doing a few multi-generational houses in larger developments, but this is the only one he knows of where every home is built with the extra suite.The project still needs approval from the La Mesa Planning Commission, and then the City Council. Dias says he's hopeful that will happen this summer, so they can break ground and start construction in the fall. He's hopeful that the homes will be ready by this time next year. But as we head into the weekend, the city's 7 p.m. curfew continues and some fear there could be more violent riots.Colorful murals now cover La Mesa businesses, destroyed by rioters and looters last weekend. For Kenny Siler, Friday is a big win. "It means the world to be able to come in here," Siler said.He drove his legally blind friends to the Vons grocery store on the first day it reopened. "If there's a good sale, [I get] a whole bunch of Gatorade, and if there's a good chunk of meat I can smoke," he laughed. He's one of the hundreds of La Mesans supporting local businesses as soon as they can. Some shop, some clean, some donate.Next to Vons, California Coast Credit Union still has not reopened. "Both ATM's and inside, everything has been just butchered," the credit union's Sr. VP of Communications, Rene McKee said.They were victims of the riots, but they are also stepping up to help. Friday, the credit union donated ,000 to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund. The online Gofundme account continues to grow every hour, far past the original goal of ,000."It's helping to bolster the spirits of the residents here in La Mesa and these small businesses," McKee said. While glimmers of hope begin to flicker, La Mesans still face the reality that what happened last weekend, could happen again. One hundred national guard troops continue to provide added security and prevent property damage, with 100 more on standby in case the situation worsens. For Siler, who is a proud military veteran, he hopes this weekend will bring peace and order. "I support my constitution," Siler said. "Protest. But don't do what you've done," he pointed at the boarded-up walls.The money donated to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund will be collected on June 25, 2020. (KGTV) - Three dozen scuba divers resumed their search Tuesday for the Canadian girl believed to have drowned in the San Vicente Reservoir.The 12-year-old girl was on a ski boat with six people, including her parents and younger sister, Saturday afternoon when she fell in the water and did not surface.Search teams later found the girl’s damaged life jacket five feet from the boat.RELATED: Search for missing 12-year-old at San Vicente Reservoir continues“The child was at the front of the boat. They were pulling an inflatable behind with the adults. As they come down on speed, the bow of the boat kind of slows and dips, and the child fell overboard,” Sgt. Bryan Brecht of the San Diego Police, Beach Team and Harbor Unit, said. The rescue became a recovery mission hours after the girl disappeared.Although the reservoir is extremely clear, with 20-foot visibility, there are bushes, trees and rocks below the water line, officials said.36 divers from the U.S. Border Patrol, Navy, San Diego Fire Department lifeguards, City of San Diego lake rangers, San Diego Harbor Police and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the scene Tuesday morning.Crews also have the assistance of technology from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, City of San Diego Public Utilities Department, and Teledyne SeaBotix.Among the resources are three human remains search dogs on boats with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.An AMR ambulance crew was placed on standby to assist in any medical emergencies.
