KHARTOUM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese official said Saturday that the China-Arab Cooperation Forum constitutes an important platform to upgrade the economic, commercial and social ties between China and the Arab world."The China-Arab Cooperation Forum is important as it constitutes one of the major mechanisms to enhance and strengthen the economic and commercial relations between the Arab states and China," Abdul-Baqui Jailani, Sudanese state minister for humanitarian affairs, told Xinhua, one week before a ministerial conference of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum scheduled for May 13, in Tianjin, China.Jailani regarded the Sino-Sudanese cooperation as a model for the Arab countries to follow suit, saying that "Chinese experience in Sudan deserves to be studied thoroughly and it deserves to be repeated elsewhere in any other African or Arab country"."I think if we take for example oil industry, exploration and production services, the Chinese have proved to be at the highest level of development in this industry in particular, and I think we can develop this in other similar countries where there are reserves of petroleum," he added.He went on to say that "China is working with full transparency; they can build confidence with others without any hindrances or obstacles."The Sudanese official further called upon the Arab and African countries as well to give the Chinese a chance to invest and cooperate, adding that "such cooperation will result in mutual benefit for both China and others nations."He affirmed that China's contribution to establishment of development projects in Sudan would help in achieving lasting stability and peace in the country, saying that "for example, if we concentrate on development, on infrastructure, we will come to peace in Darfur. BRASILIA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao explained to several foreign leaders why he had to cut short his visit after a deadly earthquake in northwestern China's Qinghai province."At this difficult time, I need to return to my country urgently, to be together with the people of China, pitching in with the earthquake rescue efforts," Hu said to the leaders.A 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on Wednesday, killing at least 1,144 people and leaving 294 missing and 11,486 injured. About 100,000 people have been relocated.When the tragedy was reported to Hu, he had just attended the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington. Hu held an urgent meeting to analyze the sudden quake.Hu urged all-out efforts to save lives and provide assistance to people in the disaster zone. BEIJING, May 3 -- Ma Weihua, president and chief executive officer of China Merchants Bank (CMB), said he wanted to see Chinese banks elevate their level of globalization in the context of expedited overseas expansion of Chinese companies during his bank's recent road show in the United States. He said CMB would pursue this process ambitiously but cautiously.The bank is soon to relocate its night-shift foreign exchange trading team to its New York branch, which was established in 2008, and will move on to security trading as well in the future, according to Ma during a group interview. The branch is also working on consolidating its dollar settlement business."What I'm concerned about right now is to first have my New York branch familiarized with the US market, customers and rules as soon as possible so I can expand the business steadily," Ma told the audience at a recent speech at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. "We won't consider faster expansion until we have secured our position here."Because of policy restrictions, CMB and other Chinese banks are only able to provide very limited services overseas for now. Retail banking, which CMB is best at, is still being constrained in its New York branch, its first branch in the West. But the bank is eyeing up other opportunities.The branch is attaching increasing importance to the loan business for Chinese companies during their overseas merger and acquisition activities. It just completed a big deal for a Chinese State-owned conglomerate but declined to reveal its name."The most fundamental motive to globalize our bank is to support Chinese companies' overseas growth and to provide the same quality service for foreign companies as well when they come to China," Ma said.According to Ma, over the past five years, Chinese companies' overseas direct investment saw an annual increase of 60 percent and their non-financial overseas investment grew by 68.5 percent year-on-year.In comparison, overseas assets only make up less than 4 percent of Chinese banks' total assets, while in large banks in Europe and the US, the proportion is about 40 percent, he said.

Hormats, who once served as a senior economics advisor to Dr. Henry Kissinger, has visited China many times.He hailed the U.S.-China relationship that has witnessed "remarkable development" since the two countries forged diplomatic ties.But that does not mean there are no differences or competition between the United States and China, he added.Still, when looking back, the differences the two countries have been resolved in a constructive way, he said.The two countries' leaders understand they need to get along, he said.Hormats has made the visit to China amid calls in the United States for China to let its currency, the yuan, appreciate in value against the dollar.He said the United States commends China for its efforts to undertake rebalancing in China, and "we think China had made great progress.""We do not regard the competition with China as a zero-sum game," Hormats said, adding that strong growth in China helps the United States.The U.S.-China relationship is extremely important, and the two countries have a great opportunity now to do things in their common interests, he said.At the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama will meet while the second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue will take place in May.Hormats also said the two countries need to enhance collaboration within the global architecture, and expand cooperation in areas such as clean energy, innovation and economic rebalancing.Hormats will also attend the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in China's southernmost Hainan Province.
