PHOENIX — Arizona news station ABC15 has learned that an Arizona lawyer assisting the Trump campaign is looking at ballots filled out with Sharpies as one focus for what could become an attempt to flip Arizona to President Donald Trump.The attorney says many Trump supporters who used Sharpies are worried that their votes are being thrown out as the counting process continues around Arizona. There is no evidence at this point that Sharpie votes have been disqualified.The attorney, who has deep roots in the state’s election processing system, told ABC15’s Nicole Valdes that the Sharpie ballots are on the radar of those deciding what, if anything, they may do in court. The information was given on condition that the source would not be named. ABC15 has verified that the attorney has direct knowledge of the developing legal strategy for President Donald Trump in Arizona.The information comes as ABC News reported Wednesday that Governor Doug Ducey told the White House he “sees something” that could get Arizona and its 11 electoral votes in the win column for the President.At this point, there’s no sign of any movement toward actual litigation around the Sharpie ballots or any other vote casting or vote counting activity.Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is on the record defending the Sharpie ballots, though a ballpoint pen is the recommended method for filling out a ballot. Its use on Arizona ballots became a prominent conversation point on Twitter overnight.The Maricopa County Elections Department says even if marks made by Sharpies or any felt tip marker on a ballot bleed through the paper, it won't impact their tabulator's ability to read contests. Maricopa County's tabulators are designed only to read the ovals for each contest, according to county election officials. PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A man suspected of smuggling drugs along Interstate 8 with his teenage son in the car was arrested Friday by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Pine Valley. The 62-year-old unidentified man drove a Honda Accord through the I-8 immigration checkpoint and triggered a Border Patrol canine response, agents said. A secondary inspection turned up anomalies with the car’s battery.Agents said they found four vaccuum-sealed bags that tested positive for characteristics of cocaine. The packages weighed 10 pounds and had a street value of more than 0,000, according to the Border Patrol. The man, a U.S. citizen, was taken into the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration. POINT ROBERTS, Wash. -- In Point Roberts, Washington, the beauty of nature isn’t hard to find.“The environment is unsurpassed,” said Brian Calder, director of the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce. “I mean, it's a beautiful spot.”It’s a town of about 1,000 people, where two nations meet: the U.S. and Canada.Lately, though, people there feel more like they’re caught in the middle.“We're surrounded by foreign territory, not part of North America, USA,” Calder said.Point Roberts is what’s known as an “exclave.” When a 19th century treaty established the 49th parallel as part of the U.S. border with Canada, Point Roberts ended up on the American side, but cut off from the rest of the U.S. because it sits at the end of a peninsula, with Canada to the north of it.Normally, travelling back and forth across the border isn’t an issue.However, because of the coronavirus, the border is closed and the town – which relies on tourism – is at a standstill.“Our traffic comes from Canada, lower mainland primarily, and that's what drives our economy. Period,” Calder said. “We have nothing internally.”Whitney McElroy owns Breakwaters Bar & Grill, where hundreds of people usually gather for music and food. That didn’t happen this year, though. The current situation forced him to furlough all but two employees.“We're down between 85 and 90%,” McElroy said of the grill. “By opening the border, it would considerably help this community. It would bring it back to life again, as it's pretty much dead now.”One of the few things keeping the town alive is the lone supermarket.“On a normal summer week, we do we see about 8,000 customers,” said Ali Hayton, who owns the Point Roberts Marketplace.This year, business at the supermarket is down 80%. Since the lone school in town only goes up to 3rd grade, her children, like some others there, attend nearby schools in Canada. School, though, is considered a non-essential border crossing. So, in order to continue going to her current high school in Canada, her oldest daughter moved in with friends of the family.“By doing that to a family, we're really, we're just killing these kids,” Andreoli said. “So, we need to smarten up as a country, both countries, and look past the politics and look past all that.”Residents believe there could be a simple solution.“If we can have an exemption federally from both sides of the fence, then I think it would definitely ease things and make things a lot more palatable for people,” said Nic Lehoux, who lives in Point Roberts.Recently, a twice weekly passenger ferry service and small plane service began for residents in Point Roberts. PINE VALLEY, Calif. — A suspected human smuggler was sentenced to 30 months in prison for barreling through a Border Patrol checkpoint, narrowly missing vehicles and severely injuring a border agent.Jorge Garcia-Osornio, 28, of Michoacán, Mexico, was charged with transporting certain aliens and aiding and abetting from the Nov. 14, 2017 incident.Border officials said Garcia was illegally in the U.S. when he approached a Pine Valley border checkpoint with two illegal immigrants hidden in the floor of his vehicle. As he neared the line of cars waiting, Garcia made an illegal U-turn and began driving in the opposite direction on the freeway, officials said.Agents began to pursue Garcia before he made another U-turn and headed back toward the checkpoint at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour.As he reached the checkpoint, officials said Garcia narrowly missed two vehicles and a border agent, and blasted through a metal sign, sending debris in all directions.“In committing his criminal act, Garcia not only placed the lives of those he smuggled in grave danger, but seriously injured a Border Patrol agent in the process,” Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott.That debris severely injured a nearby agent, who likened the blow to being "hit with a baseball bat." The agent was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and has yet to return to duty.Garcia continued on for another three and a half miles at high speeds before exited a freeway and crashing into a hillside. One of the undocumented immigrants hiding in the vehicle told agents he "feared for his life."Garcia was arrested nearby after ditching his crashed vehicle. As part of his plea deal, he admitted to charges of driving the wrong way, using a dangerous weapon, and seriously injuring a border agent, among other charges.The man was expecting to earn between ,400 to ,000 for transporting each undocumented immigrant.“This defendant had no regard for the safety of his passengers, other drivers on the freeway or agents at the checkpoint,” U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman said in a release. “It’s a miracle no one died in this incident. Police said a two-year old boy died after ingesting medication at his grandmother’s house in Henrico County, Virginia Friday afternoon, according to WTVR-TV.Lt. Richard Brown with Henrico Police said the two-year-old swallowed up to 12 adult-dosage pills before he was transported to VCU Medical Center where he died.Officials said his body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office to determine his exact cause of death.When reporters arrived at the home Saturday, social services workers were inside investigating.The family’s spokesperson, Ricky Johnson, said he could not provide additional information since Kejon Edwards’ death is still under investigation.“We suffered a loss and we are just asking that you pray for this family and pray for this community,” said Johnson with the Ricky Johnson and Friends Foundation. “The family is asking for privacy right now, while we try to figure this out.
