SHANGHAI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- All entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo will be suspended Sunday in a show of respect for the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province. The Chinese national flags at the Expo Garden would fly at half-mast, and both the music broadcast at the opening and during the day would be stopped, the Shanghai Expo Bureau announced Saturday.Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau's concierge director, said flags of the Bureau of International Expositions and the Shanghai World Expo would also fly at half-mast.Other Expo participants could decide for themselves whether to fly their flags at half-mast.The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China's cabinet, which ordered suspension of all public entertainment and that Chinese flags fly at half-mast Sunday. The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8 has killed at least 1,239 people and an estimated 505 are still missing.According to the Expo Bureau, the Gansu Pavilion will hold a "solemn and simple" ceremony starting 10 a.m. Sunday. The big screen in the pavilion will broadcast pictures and videos of disaster relief in Zhouqu County. On Saturday night, a performance from Chongqing Municipality will include a tribute to victims of the Aug. 8 mudslide.Almost 100 performances and cultural activities scheduled for Sunday would be suspended. A performance by the Panama national troupe, scheduled Sunday morning at the Panama Pavilion, would be held on Saturday evening, a pavilion spokesman told Xinhua.Sunday also marked the National Pavilion Day for Equatorial Guinea. Whether the scheduled celebration to be held was still under discussion, said the Expo Bureau.Since Aug. 8, volunteers at the Shanghai Expo have put stickers with four Chinese characters "May Heaven Bless Zhouqu" on their uniforms, to call for attention on the mudslide-hit area. On the sticker is a picture of Zhouqu, taken by an Expo volunteer who had just returned from a volunteer teaching program in the county.Donation boxes in the Pavilion of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have received donations for Zhouqu.

BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Sunday called on overseas Chinese youths participating in a "root-seeking tour" to carry on the traditions of their ancestors, feed their mind with spiritual nutrition from the Chinese history and culture, and become communicators between cultures.Xi told more than 6,000 overseas Chinese youths from 51 countries and regions including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, that they should become active promoters of cultural exchanges.Xi enouraged the youths to actively participate in various forms of cultural exchange activities, let more people know about the rich Chinese culture, and become "civilian ambassadors" between China and the places they live in.Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping delivers a speech at the opening ceremony of the "2010 Chinese Root-Seeking Tour" summer camp in Beijing, July 25, 2010.Xi made the call in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the "2010 Chinese Root-Seeking Tour" summer camp held at the Great Hall of the People.Xi said that overseas Chinese coming back to China to seek their roots show that they have a strong "sense of closeness" toward their ancestral home, and understand that their blood is Chinese and they are willing to carry on the Chinese culture that has lasted thousands of years."The Chinese culture is the only one of the world's ancient civilizations that continuously lasted 5,000 years. The unique cultural traditions are the common wealth of all the Chinese at home and abroad," he said.Xi stressed that China would always adhere to the road of "development, peace and cooperation" and make greater contributions to the progress of mankind's civilization.Since 1999, six sessions of the "Chinese Root-Seeking Tour" summer camp have been held by the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the Chinese Overseas Exchange Association. During the following three days, camp members will visit historical sites and scenic spots in Beijing and have a get-together with their local peers.

XINING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior anti-corruption official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday urged strict supervision and inspection of relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide on Aug. 8.A supervision and inspection system must be established to ensure thorough implementation of the central authorities' instructions on disaster relief and reconstruction, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. He made the remarks at a conference on supervision and inspection of relief funds and supplies. He instructed intensified supervision and inspection of medical, mud-clearing, infrastructure rebuilding, resident relocation and epidemic prevention operations. He also ordered stepped-up supervision of the use of disaster relief funds, supplies and donations, and asked local officials to make public how they were utilizing the funds in a timely manner. He said the principle of openness and transparency must be applied throughout the period of disaster relief work and reconstruction, and vowed to punish any misuse of relief funds and supplies. The mudslide has killed 1,254 while 490 people remain missing as of Monday.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese experts on Tuesday refuted claims by the Pentagon released in a report that China is developing cyberwarfare capabilities, saying that the U.S. military was attempting to blacken China's image."I've never heard about any plans by China to develop its cyber attack forces, not to mention China's so-called 'organized cyber intrusion," Hu Qiheng, president of the Internet Society of China (ISC) told Xinhua on the sidelines of the China Internet Conference, which opened here Tuesday."It is a mere fabrication that China is using computer technologies to intrude on other countries' sovereignty," Hu said. The Chinese expert's comments came after the U.S. Department of Defense concluded early Tuesday in its annual assessment report sent to the U.S. Congress that "China is fielding...cyberwarfare capabilities to hold targets at risk throughout the region.""The U.S. purpose (of releasing such a report) is to tarnish China's image and exaggerate the threat China poses," Hu said. The U.S. was the top country of cyber attack origin in 2008, accounting for 25 percent of worldwide activity, according to a report by U.S. security firm Symantec. The ISC said more than 1 million Internet Protocol addresses in China were controlled by overseas hackers while 42,000 Chinese websites were tampered or hacked in 2009.Ni Feng, deputy director of the Institute of American Studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the United States has greatly outstripped any other country in terms of Internet technological power."As the source of Internet technology, the United States enjoys the most advanced Internet technologies and equipment in the world," Ni said, "thus it makes no sense and is beyond my comprehension for the United States to play up such cyber threat from China.""Maybe the only reasonable explanation is that the United States has always been on the alert for China's development," Ni said. "The U.S. government needs this kind of rhetoric as an excuse to scale up its cyberwarfare capabilities and win support from Congress, the media and the public at large.""If the United States continues such behavior, looking for topics to attack China, the mistrust between the two countries will only get worse," he added.
