ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. (KGTV) -- The Encinitas teenager bitten by a great white shark is thanking all who saved him and those who continue to support his recovery.It was nearly two months ago when 13-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes was attacked while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach.Webre-Hayes sustained substantial damage to his left torso and face. His humorous was broken, ball joint broke in half, and rotator cuff torn apart in several places. He also lost a significant amount of his deltoid and lat muscles.The 13-year-old underwent hours of surgeries and got 1,000 stitches."I feel really thankful to have my arm, to be alive, and I'm thankful to probably in the future help other people," said Webre-Hayes.He's now considering a career in lifeguarding. Those who helped him are on a long list of people he wants to thank.“The people that towed me in from the kayak, the first responders, the pilot, the doctors, the nurses, all the companies that have given me things, it's motivation to get back out there and do what I love, like surfing and skateboarding," said Webre-Hayes.His mother, Ellie Hayes, says she is grateful for the outpouring of support and financial donations which will help with ongoing medical expenses."It’s one of the ultimate tests, and I know that there’s a reason and meaning, and there’s good that we can do with it," said Ellie. "We don’t know what that is right now, we’re going through it day by day, but we're  open and ready to make sure we spread the word of courage and strength."Webre-Hayes will continue physical therapy and could have additional surgeries in the future. 1620

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Students at Classic Academy High School will return to school Tuesday without one of their own, who was tragically killed in a car accident over the weekend. Jonah Staebell died early Saturday morning when the truck he was riding in crashed. CHP officials say the accident happened at about 2:35 a.m. on Saturday on Summit Drive and Old Pasqual Road. Officers say seven teens were riding in a pick-up truck when the 18-year-old driver lost control and overturned. Five teens, including Staebell, were riding in the bed of the truck and all of them were ejected. Staebell died at the hospital. Staebell's principal, Dana Moen spoke to 10News Monday night. Moen remembered Jonah as a beloved student who did well in the classroom and in athletics. Moen says Staebell played football, lacrosse, and was a dancer. School officials tell 10News students officially go back to school on Tuesday and grief counselors will be on-site for as long as they're needed. According to Moen, the other teens involved in the accident were all treated at the hospital but have since been released. CHP says speed was a factor in the crash, but drugs or alcohol were not involved. According to the family's GoFundMe page, Jonah was the youngest of four siblings.
