BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The nearly 10 billion yuan donation from the Communist Party of China (CPC) members would all be used for the reconstruction of China's quake zones, the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee said Saturday. As one of the relief efforts after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake battered southwestern China on May 12 last year, some 45.5 million CPC members donated 9.73 billion yuan (1.43 billion U.S. dollars) as "special membership fees" for the quake victims. So far, nearly 90 percent of the fund had been allocated to the quake regions, and the rest would also be appropriated according to procedures, the department said in a statement. The money was spent on rebuilding schools and subsidizing survivors among others, it said
BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will send a sports delegation to participate in the 2009 World Games to be held in Kaohsiung, a southern coastal city of Taiwan. Liu Peng, chairman of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), said athletes from nine associations of the COC will compete in the games. He made the promise during his meeting with Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu in Beijing Friday. The mainland will also send an observation delegation to the games, Liu said, adding that sports is a medium and bridge which connects people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. Chen Chu said her delegation hoped to learn from the successful experience of the Beijing Olympic Games. She led a promotion team for the 2009 World Games to the mainland on Thursday. ROME, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Wednesday evening with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi. Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997. Before meeting with Berlusconi, Wu also met with Italian Senate President Renato Schifani Wednesday morning and signed an agreement on establishing a mechanism of regular exchanges between the Chinese NPC and the Italian Senate. During his meetings with Italian leaders in Rome, Wu expressed the willingness of strengthening economic cooperation with Italy as a way to counter the impact of international financial crisis. In an earlier meeting with Chinese entrepreneurs who are doing business in Italy, Wu said the financial crisis has brought about new opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and Italian companies. The Italian leaders expressed the willingness to expand cooperation with China in various fields, saying China's economic growth will hopefully provide new energy for the recovery and rally of world economy. Both sides agreed that the two countries should coordinate their stance on reform of the international financial system and work for an early recovery of global economy from the financial crisis. Dai listed four aspects for further cooperation and coordination among the G5 when he, on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao, addressed the leaders' meeting of China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico on Wednesday afternoon in the earthquake-stricken Italian city of L'Aquila.
