All my friends are really excited; they've been freaking out about it all day, as have I — as I should — and it's just such a surreal exciting, exciting experience," Gitanjali said over a Zoom call Thursday.Gitanjali said she was given the news of her most recent accomplishment by Academy Award-winning actor and UN humanitarian ambassador Angelia Jolie. She called the experience "surreal" and not something she would have ever imagined.And while she may be the first-ever Kid of the Year, it isn't the first accomplishment for the bright teenager.In 2018, when Gitanjali was 12 years old, she spoke with Scripps station KMGH in Denver after she was named America's Top Young Scientist for creating Thetys, a device that detects lead in water — an invention inspired by the water crisis in Flint, Mich."I think there's so much we can do with technology; we just have to apply it in the right way, and that's really what I wanted to start doing," Gitanjali said Thursday when asked about her motivation for helping others. (AP) — The wife of a man who was struck and killed by a Metrolink train in Southern California says investigators told her he pushed her out of the way.The Orange County Register reports Saturday that Jacqueline Gibson, of Lake Elsinore, said she was vacationing with her 71-year-old husband Ernest Gibson Monday when they crossed the tracks to return to their Dana Point campground.She says he suddenly told her to run. She found herself on the other side moments later as the train came through.Once it passed, she found her husband's body.She says investigators told her video from the train showed her husband pushing her out of the way.Metrolink officials say the area was restricted. DENVER -- The administration of a Denver charter school has been suspended after disturbing video of a playground fight went public. Now, Denver police are investigating the teacher who appears to encourage the girls to throw punches.The April 20 video shows a group of girls at Wyatt Academy in an argument that escalated quickly. The restorative justice officer in the video appears to be smiling and laughing and can be heard at one point in the video saying, "Is anyone, like, going to hit anyone or is this just going to be a…"To which, a child yelled, "people are going to start hitting," before the violence escalated.Community activists said the real story isn't the fight, but the fact that three little girls received Denver Police citations for public fighting, while the school took no action against the teacher for a month — until the video went public."This whole time this is escalating, he never calls for anybody," said H Soul Ashemu, with Our Voice Our Schools, which released the video to try to initiate action from the school or the Denver Public School District.Denver Public School released a statement Friday afternoon saying it is investigating and that they are "deeply troubled by the video." 1248
