Floyd Martin's last day on the job was anything but typical. The Atlanta man retired Wednesday after working nearly 35 years as a postal carrier. The people in a suburban Atlanta neighborhood in Marietta where he's delivered the mail all these years wanted to send him out in style as he worked his route for the last time.So as his mail truck moved through the area, the neighbors gave him hugs. And gave gifts. And decorated their mailboxes in his honor. And posed for pictures with him. They even invited him to come back in the fall to be a celebrity judge in the neighborhood's Halloween parade. His daylong goodbye basically turned into a big 'ole street party that attracted more than 300 people. The neighbors even brought covered dishes, wrote neighbor (and Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter) Jennifer Brett, who accompanied him on his last day and 871
Former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden said he used "poor judgment" in serving on the board of a Ukrainian gas company because it has become a political liability for his father."In retrospect, look, I think that it was poor judgment on my part, is that I think that it was poor judgment because I don't believe now, when I look back on it -- I know that there was, I did nothing wrong at all -- however, was it poor judgment to be in the middle of something that is -- it's a swamp -- in many ways? Yeah," Biden 537
Hurricane Dorian's impact off Florida's coast is turning the strong wind and surf into tourist attractions for people in Cocoa Beach."I mean it's beyond crazy,” describes Sheane Lamar, who came to the beach to see the kite surfers taking advantage of the strong winds. “I came to see the craziness, and it's definitely crazy.”Brevard County's mandatory evacuation went into effect on Monday. Forecasters are telling people in Florida to continue taking the storm's threat seriously. However, the Floridians here say they’ve experienced these weather threats before and are confident they will be OK. "Been there, done that," says Shalay Hubbard.Hubbard brought her son to Cocoa Beach to see the weather move in. "This is not all that scary for us," she says. "If you live in Florida, you better deal with hurricanes. If you live in Massachusetts, you better deal with blizzards."The storm is expected to bring rain, wind and storm surge to Florida's space coast Tuesday night into Wednesday. 1004
Former pro basketball player Andre Emmett, 37, was shot and killed early Monday morning in Dallas. Police have not disclosed a motive. After playing for four years at Texas Tech under head coach Bob Knight, Emmett was drafted in the second round of the 2004 NBA draft with the 35th overall pick.Emmett had brief stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and New Jersey Nets, and he more recently played professionally in the three-on-three league, BIG3.Early Monday morning, Emmett was approached by two men as he sat in his car in front of his home in Dallas, police said. The men produced a handgun, police said. An altercation followed and Emmett was shot as he ran away, they said.A passerby found Emmett and called 911. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.Emmett had "emerged as a leading MVP candidate and had one of the most impressive playoff runs in BIG3 history," according to a BIG3 profile."The BIG3 is in a state of shock over the sudden and tragic death of Andre Emmett. Andre was a member of the BIG3 family for two seasons and never without a smile on his face. His kindness towards others and easy-going demeanor made him a joy to be around," the BIG3 said in a statement."Off the court, Dre was passionate about helping young people through his Dreams Really Exist foundation. We are simply heartbroken by this devastating loss. Our thoughts are with Andre's family and friends during this difficult time." 1427
House Democrats will vote on a legislative package to reopen the government when they take over the chamber on Thursday, a Democratic aide confirms to CNN.The Democrats plan to vote on six Senate spending bills and a stopgap measure to re-open the Homeland Security Department at its current funding levels until February 8, the aide said. The temporary measure would maintain the current .3 billion in border security money.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made clear he will not move forward on any legislation until President Donald Trump signs off on it. The move by House Democrats, however, will have the effect of jamming Senate Republicans and the White House as talks for a compromise agreement to reopen the government remain at an impasse.Senate Democrats support the House Democratic plan, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and expected incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been in constant contact and are on the same page on the plan, a senior Senate Democratic aide said.Democrats believe it's smart to separate Department of Homeland Security funding — and the wall fight — from the other six bills because they think it puts Trump and the Republicans in the position of holding the other agencies and furloughed workers hostage for the wall, the aide said. Democrats believe pressure will mount on Republicans as the shutdown drags on, the aide said. 1402
