SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A suspected DUI driver overturned his car while speeding in the East Village, sending a passenger flying from the vehicle and facing life-threatening injuries.A 23-year-old man was driving a 2004 Toyota Prius "at a high rate of speed" eastbound on Market St. just before midnight Friday, according to San Diego Police. As he turned left to continue northbound on 7th Ave., he struck the curb and his Toyota overturned.A 24-year-old man sitting in the passenger's seat was ejected from the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries, including a crushed pelvis and internal bleeding. They were in critical condition Saturday morning, according to police.The driver suffered a laceration to his forehead, police said.Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman bought a puppy for her kids. Four hours later, it was dead. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to local veterinarians who say that a new state law is, in part, to blame. “It was beautiful. It was sweet,” says Enjoli Spaulding of her former Golden Retriever puppy. The San Diego mother of three had been looking for a family Golden Retriever for some time. She checked with formal breeders but the prices were high. “Those dogs are about ,500, minimum,” she tells us. Then she found an adorable Golden Retriever puppy for 0 on a buy-sell website called Recycler.Spaulding, along with her mother, Kathy Pardini, met the seller in a parking lot.“[The puppy] seemed like it had been very loved,” says Pardini. Spaulding adds, “She gave me a vaccination record. She also gave me a bill from the vet when the dog had a physical exam.” The deal appeared to be legitimate, so Spaulding handed over the cash, and they went to surprise her son at school. “He said, ‘Mom, you got me a dog! My very own dog!’ He was just over the moon,” she tells us.The family took the puppy home and played with it in the backyard. “My daughter got her tea set ready,” says Spaulding. Then the playtime took a terrifying turn. Parvovirus suddenly wreaked havoc on the puppy’s bowels and it was bleeding. The puppy was rushed to the hospital, where he was put down. The family was devastated. “The vet told me the dog had been sick for a long time. This was not a new situation,” she tells 10News.“It was surreal,” adds Pardini.Spaulding says the seller would not return her calls. She also discovered that the puppy’s paperwork from the seller was apparently forged. “It was a completely fake document,” she says. She has since filed a police report.Dr. Scott DiLorenzo is a veterinarian and owner of Escondido's Animal Urgent Care. “We have seen an uptick in these cases,” he tells 10News. He says a new California law is part of the problem. It bans pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits, unless they come from shelters or rescues. The law was intended to stop harmful breeding operations like puppy mills. Yet now, consumers aren't always sure where to turn to for specific breeds that they want. “There's just limited sources for people to go out and get the breeds that they want so they're turning to unvetted websites,” adds Dr. DiLorenzo.The American Kennel Club writes, in part, to 10News, "The uptick in this trend corresponds precisely with the implementation of California's new ban on the sale of purpose bred pets at regulated pet shops…”San Diegan Lisa Hexom says she got scammed with a sick dog, too. “I don't want to lose him,” she cries from the veterinary hospital. Max, her Cockapoo puppy, has been racking up a ,000 hospital bill. Max became deathly ill just five days after she bought him for 0 from a Craigslist seller who she met in Carlsbad parking lot.Hexom later learned that the shot records given to her were fake and the seller has gone dark.The American Kennel Club says the U.S. Department of Agriculture is in charge of licensing breeders. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A suspicious package discovered at Naval Air Station North Island forced military investigators to close the base's Main Gate on Monday morning.The closure at base, located on the northside of the Coronado peninsula, created major delays along the Coronado Bridge and into the base."North Island Naval Air Station main gate has been closed, expect delays in the area," the Coronado Police Department tweeted.Officials kept the remaining two gates at the base were left open during the investigation. The Main Gate was reopened just before 9:30 a.m.Details about the package were not available at this time.NAS North Island is the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy.The incident comes as San Diego County military bases began bolstering security measures amid rising tensions in the Middle East and threats of retaliation against the U.S. after an American drone killed a top Iranian general.Officials have warned that military law enforcement will be checking all identification cards and increasing vehicle inspections prompting entry gate delays."Due to these security measures, travelers will experience longer wait times entering installation," Camp Pendleton officials said on Twitter Monday. 1255

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A war veteran who used to deliver meals to seniors in the North County is now receiving them himself.City councilman Mark Kersey honored Jim Munday on Wednesday morning for his contributions. This week, the long-time Rancho Bernardo resident will celebrate a birthday most of us can only hope to reach—102 years old.Councilman Kersey brought him a blanket, flowers, some food, and a special certificate in honor of his birthday and thanking him for all of his contributions to the Meals on Wheels of San Diego County, but it's even more meaningful because Jim was once a Meals on Wheels volunteer himself.“He started delivering when he was 90 and now he's 102, so he's a pretty special guy,” Kersey said. At 102, Munday is quiet, modest, and hard of hearing but still very much aware of the world around him.“A good day for a birthday party,” he said as he sat outside. The World War II vet fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving several medals including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.His own artwork lines his living room. He started painting when was 90 and says he learned from watching Bob Ross on PBS.In 2003, Munday’s wife, Mildred, passed away, but their great-grandson, Hudson, and daughter Millie, were both on hand for this major milestone.“He's a very honest, generous person, and I'm very proud of him,” Millie said. A man taught his family to care for others. Now his community is doing the same for him.“To be able to give back to someone who's given so much is something that makes San Diego and Rancho Bernardo a special place,” Kersey said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A suspicious backpack prompted a bomb squad response downtown Tuesday afternoon. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. just outside the federal building on the 800 block of Front Street. Authorities say a security guard at the building saw a man acting suspiciously before tossing a military backpack into a planter. After using special equipment to examine the bag, the bomb squad found only personal items inside the bag. The FBI said it sent agents to the scene, but that the "matter is being led by Federal Protective Services." 596
