SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The days of free parking at the Westfield UTC Mall are numbered and it could cost some employees. Come January 30, the mall will roll out its 'secured parking plan' aimed at keeping non-shoppers from parking on the property.Customers can park free for the first two hours and then pay per additional hour, with a daily maximum of . While the parking stations have been in place for months, some mall employees say they were blindsided to learn they too might have to pay for parking. Mall officials say employers have the option of purchasing parking passes for employees. If not purchased by the employer, individual employees may purchase the passes themselves.“It’s another bill to put on top of the rest," said one employee, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being fired. His employer will not be purchasing parking passes for employees. The anonymous employee says they were told daily passes will cost and monthly passes will cost .“Personally it’s 0 out of my budget each year to go to work, and that’s on top of car payment and insurance," said the employee.He's concerned for mall employees who only make minimum wage and cannot afford the extra cost. While the mall is offering subsidized public transit passes, the concerned employee says that's not an option for everyone. He wishes there had been more transparency about the policy in the months leading up to January 30 roll-out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding residents about the looming REAL ID deadline. Starting October 1, 2020, U.S. residents will need a REAL ID to fly domestically or enter secure federal facilities and military bases. The new ID is the result of the 9/11 Commission's recommendation to establish standards for identity verification and security features. In California, a gold bear and star indicates REAL ID compliance. The DMV is also reminding residents about requirements to obtain a REAL ID. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego's Development Services division is still investigating the platform that collapsed at a Barrio Logan gym this weekend and injured 21 minors and a few adults. At least one minor is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis, we're told.A city spokesperson reported to 10 News on Tuesday that no further details would be released until the investigation is complete.On Monday, the spokesperson said there were definite code violations and missing permits at Vault PK parkour gym, where the incident happened. Whether the gym will face any penalties is still unknown. The gym has only been open for a few months. On a Facebook post, it appears much of the construction of the facility was done by the owner's immediate family.  On Monday, San Diego Police Department's media relations division confirmed that the incident is a civil matter and the department will not be recommending any criminal charges, including criminal negligence.  There is another Vault PK parkour gym in Torrance. We called the facility today. Someone answered the phone and said the facility is closed for inspections. No further details were given.  1222

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The CDC is making plans to distribute millions of doses of a coronavirus vaccine by late next month, but government officials have gotten these predictions wrong in the past.Doctors and scientists say there are reasons to be skeptical of the timelines laid out by Operation Warp Speed based on the lessons of 2009 and 1976.During the height of the H1N1 Pandemic in 2009, San Diegans waited in long lines to get vaccinated only to find there were not many doses to go around.The CDC initially projected there would be 120 million doses of vaccine ready by October 2009. Then federal officials scaled back the projection to 45 million.By the end of October, only 23 million doses would become available due to delays in the manufacturing process.“The lesson of H1N1 is that you may make all the plans on paper, but the actual nuts and bolts of rolling it out is really challenging and not to be underestimated,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco.Manufacturers had trouble growing the H1N1 vaccine in chicken eggs, the most common method for producing flu vaccines. There were also issues with testing the vaccine’s potency and problems switching production lines from the seasonal flu vaccine to the H1N1 strain, according to an after-action report by the Department of Health and Human Services.A lot goes into making a vaccine, said Dr. Rahul Gupta of March of Dimes.“It's not just the vaccine but also the syringes, and the needles, and the stoppers, and the alcohol pads,” he said. “There are so many other things that go along when we talk about a vaccine.”By the time the vaccine was widely available, the pandemic had petered out.Experts say there are also some parallels to what happened in 1976.During the height of an election cycle, President Gerald Ford fast-tracked a vaccine after some soldiers on a military base in New Jersey got sick with a strain of H1N1, then called Swine Flu, that was genetically similar to the strain that killed millions in 1918.“Some scientists were telling Gerald Ford that this was going to be as bad as Spanish Flu,” said Dr. Chin-Hong.The U.S. launched a huge media campaign, urging Americans to get vaccinated.President Ford rolled up his sleeve and got the vaccine, along with one-quarter with the U.S. population, beginning in October of 1976.However, the viral strain they were worried about never spread beyond the military base, and there were rare side effects linked to the vaccine. Of the 45 million people inoculated, about 450 people developed Guillain–Barré syndrome and about 30 people died.One month after the vaccinations began, Ford lost the election and the episode became known as the “Swine Flu Affair.”Experts say it’s normal to have adverse reactions and production delays on the road to a vaccine.“We have to understand that’s a process. And we learn as we go along. And people have to trust the process as well,” Dr. Gupta said.But doctors say it’s a process that takes a lot of coordination, and there are aspects you just don’t want to rush. 3081
