SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego is the seventh-best university and the best public school in the country, according to just-released rankings from Washington Monthly.UCSD fell slightly in the nonprofit magazine's rankings compared to 2017, when the school ranked sixth overall but second to Texas A&M among public universities. Harvard took over the top spot on the list from Stanford, first on last year's list, with MIT, Princeton and Yale rounding out the top five.Washington Monthly ranks schools based on a number of factors, the theme being how positively each school impacts its community and the country at large. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Monday a million gift from the John and Mary Tu Foundation, designated to help increase the number of people tested for COVID-19, as well as develop new ways to track and treat the virus.The award supports the clinical research activities of UCSD translational research virologist Dr. Davey Smith, who is "advancing new diagnostics, therapies and ways to monitor the spread of the virus," according to a university statement."What we are trying to do is save lives," John Tu said of the gift to create the John and Mary Tu Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund. "It's very simple: with this research, Dr. Smith is working on behalf of everybody, to save us, to save the world."At the onset of the pandemic, Smith and his team began to investigate methods that would increase the efficiency of testing as well as understand the disease process -- how the virus mutates and spreads within a population. Through sequencing the virus, he is able to track the disease as it spreads into vulnerable populations, which informs the best means for contact tracing.Smith is also leading clinical trials to test new drugs for treatment of COVID-19 for those who have moderately severe cases."At this critical time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the generosity of the John and Mary Tu Foundation has an immediate positive impact on our efforts," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three men who took part in the shotgun slaying of a Pacific Beach resident late last year pleaded guilty Friday to voluntary manslaughter and assault charges.Carlos Yslas, 25; Pedro Ramirez, 27; and Freddy Sosa, 38, were previously facing murder charges in the Dec. 29, 2018, death of 44-year-old Marcanthony Mendivil, who was killed in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue.Yslas, who admitted to firing the shotgun, faces up to 30 years in state prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.RELATED: Suspects in fatal Pacific Beach shooting to be arraigned; victim identifiedRamirez, who faces eight years in prison, is also due to be sentenced Jan. 10. Sosa also faces eight years in prison and will be sentenced Nov. 15.A fourth defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, remains charged with murder and assault. He's due back in court next week for a status conference, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 18. Weinberger remains out of custody on million bail.Prosecutors have said that Weinberger lived in the residence where Mendivil was shot in the predawn hours of Dec. 29. However, neither a motive for the slaying, nor the defendants' relationships to each other and the victim, have been disclosed.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting last Dec. 29, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m., Dobbs said.Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati alleged during Yslas and Ramirez's arraignment earlier this year that both men entered the home masked and gloved.Yslas threatened another witness with the shotgun, then fired twice on Mendivil, the prosecutor said. They've been color blind their whole lives, but thanks to a new pair of special glasses...that's about to change."Eventually when I got to high school, and realizing I was color blind was one of those things, like, oh, that's why I couldn't see that or I couldn't see that," said Ricardo Solano. Solano is one of about 300 million people around the world who are color blind.But as a research associate for a biotech company, there are days when he needs a little help from his colleagues."One of the main dyes they use is like red and green to differentiate things," he said, laughing. "It's a big contrast apparently, but I can't see the contrast."Solano has a good sense of humor about it, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't wish he could see the full elegance of a San Diego sunset."Just enjoying the beauty of life," he said. "I like to go backpacking and outdoors and stuff."For people who are color blind, pink looks gray, red looks brown and the colors red and green can look almost white-ish."Color vision deficiency is passed down through the father's genes," said Corey Ulz, an optician at Scripps Poway Eyecare. He said things can look dull and colors, washed out."It basically makes the colors that you and I would normally see normally not as vibrant," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men were shot Saturday evening while standing on a sidewalk in the Mountain View area of San Diego.It happened about 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of South 45th Street, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The two victims were standing on the sidewalk with others, Heims said. "A vehicle was eastbound on Newton Avenue when it stopped in the intersection and someone inside fired multiple rounds at the group."A 44-year-old man was shot in the head and paramedics took him to a hospital, the officer said. "At this time, his injuries are non-life-threatening."A 29-year-old man was shot in the right arm and driven to a hospital by an unknown person, Heims said.
