BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Li Changchun on Tuesday called for stepped-up efforts to push forward China's cultural development and prosperity here in Beijing.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while visiting an exhibition held in honor of deceased Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong.Wu is widely recognized as the father of modern Chinese painting. NONG'AN, Jilin, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the approach of a new round of torrential rains, the country roads in flood-ravaged Nong'an County in northeast China were packed with villagers fleeing their homes Wednesday.Traveling aboard tractors, trucks, mini-buses, and motorcycles, and carrying belongings such as quilts and chicken, thousands of people set off on a journey of exodus.Up to 27,000 villagers living downstream from the Songhua River in Jilin Province need to be evacuated as downpours are expected to batter Nong'an from Wednesday evening until Friday, said Wang Wei, deputy Communist Party chief of the county."Fresh downpours may lead to the breach of riverbanks and two reservoirs upstream would have to open sluices to discharge water, which would threaten the lives of residents downstream," Wang said."The mass evacuation began in the early morning today. By now, 18,000 people have moved to safety. There are still 9,000 young villagers who were asked to stay and help fortify the riverbanks," he said in the late evening.Torrential rains pounded the county one week ago, swelling the Songhua River and inundating almost 50,000 hectares of cropland, or about half of the total farming area."I really don't want to leave my home. But the village officials told me: so long as you are still alive, you will have your home again," said Yu Shutao from Liansankeng Village."I will bring my family to go to my elder brother's home in the town. As soon as the floods recede, I will come home to attend my cropland," he said.Thirty-two-year-old villager Sun Lianhua sat in a mini-bus with her dog."The dog is like a member of my family. I will bring it everywhere I go," she said.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. "The City of Nanjing is working to improve the quality of life of its residents with a global initiative that has potential to create a great opportunity for some in the United States."For over a decade, Nanjing "has reached beyond the borders of the People's Republic of China to create new strategies in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, increasing the level of understanding between our two nations and stimulating U.S.- China idea exchange," he said."It is expected that this international cooperative initiative will inure to the benefit of the residents of Nanjing as well to the residents of the United States, including businesses, residents and educational institutions in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," he said.Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province in East China, has forged close ties of cooperation and partnership with Boston and Massachusetts in 2008. XI'AN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local authorities to keep flood casualties and losses to minimum and to launch reconstruction work in a timely and orderly way.Hui was speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Weinan and Shangluo cities in north China's Shaanxi Province from Aug. 2 to 3.He visited affected residents, as well as soldiers who were fighting the floods, saying the flood work had entered a crucial stage.Since mid July, many areas in Shaanxi Province have seen continuous rain, leading to frequent natural disasters, such as floods, mountain torrents and mud-rock flows.Continuous rainstorms caused mud-rock flows in Zhulinguan Village of Danfeng County, Shangluo city, on July 23 and 24. Hui visited the village and urged officials to address food, drinking water, clothing and housing issues.He also called for the repair of roads and resumption of water and electricity supplies as soon as possible.Homes, schools and hospitals should be reconstruction priorities, he said.Meteorologists forecast higher than average rainfall this month along the province's Hanjiang and Weihe rivers. Hui ordered local governments to intensify flood warnings, improve response plans, reinforce reservoirs and river embankments and replenish emergency materials, so as to be well prepared for more rain and floods. 

XI'AN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Two floods and other rain-triggered disasters that hit northwest China's Shaanxi Province in the past 11 days had left at least 111 dead and 167 missing, provincial authorities said Sunday.The first floods, from the rain-swollen Hanjiang River and its tributaries, hit Shaanxi's Ankang, Hanzhong, and Shangluo cities from July 14 to 19. Another flood that began Thursday worsened the catastrophe.The floods have affected about 4.25 million people and forced 703,000 people to be evacuated. In the worst-hit Ankang City, 63 people were killed, 119 missing and 2,824 injured, according to a statement from the provincial government.The floods also caused an estimated economic loss of 9.56 billion yuan. Officials noted that more than 71,000 people were mobilized to assist in the flood control.
