TRINITY, Fla. — Family and friends of a man who recently suffered a fractured skull are speaking out about delays in care from a Florida hospital they believe made his condition worse.On what was supposed to be a fun night playing softball, Donnie Smith's life changed forever.Smith had just thrown a pitch, when a line drive hit him in the head.“Donnie went immediately to the ground,” said teammate Bryan Williams. “Blood was coming out of his nose. You could already see the swelling.”At that point, they knew it was bad.  Another teammate took him to the nearest emergency room, which was at Medical Center of Trinity, about two miles south of the ballpark.  Donnie got to Trinity at 7:46 p.m. local time“You figure a hospital is a hospital. It's there to take care of emergencies,” said teammate Jimmy Sigmone.But not all emergency rooms can handle all emergencies, as Smith's sister Patti Dermer was about to learn.By the time she arrived, a CT scan showed his injury was potentially life-threatening.By 8:20 p.m., they knew he had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.But doctors at Trinity couldn't perform emergency surgery to relieve the pressure.At 9:16 p.m., a doctor signed a transfer order, and a surgical team was placed on stand-by 13 miles away at the Bayonet Point Trauma Center.“There were ambulances sitting outside the door, and they wouldn't put him in it,” said Deremer.As seconds and minutes ticked by, Smith's condition worsened.“He's going gray, sweating profusely, chills everywhere,” Deremer said.She said she was alone with him in an ER Bay for most of the time they were waiting.He was given an ice pack to hold on his head.  By 10 o'clock, Donnie’s heart rate dropped to under 40 beats a minute.“He wound up throwing up blood all over the room. Blood started gushing out of his nose,” Dermer said.Records indicate the ER staff had called for a helicopter, but it couldn't fly due to weather conditions. “It was the longest night of my life,” Deremer said. “Literally, I was out there screaming at people.”By 10:20 p.m., Donnie’s blood pressure spiked and his pulse was dropping.The ER team rushed him to another room and put him to sleep.  Records show that finally at 10:21 p.m., the first call from Trinity was made to Pasco County EMS for an ambulance.It was two-and-a-half hours after Donnie first arrived at Trinity and more than an hour after a doctor signed the transfer order.Donnie finally got to Bayonet Point at 11:25 p.m., four hours after the softball fractured his skull.Friends wish they'd called 911 from the ball field, so paramedics would have taken him where he needed to go the first time.“You can point a million fingers. VENICE, Fla. -- A Florida pet groomer is under investigation by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office after a recent video of alleged animal abuse surfaced on social media.The video taken by former Happy Puppy Pet Spa employee Briana Brady, shows another employee putting both hands around a dog's neck and laying it down on the table, leaving Brady to label the action as animal abuse. Brady first witnessed the alleged abuse when another dog left the salon with a broken jaw.“The dog was picked up by the throat, choked, shaken and then his head slammed on the table,” Brady said describing the video.The viral Facebook video has over 250,000 views. Brady worked at the Spa for four weeks prior to posting the video on social media.“It was very hard for me to witness any of that happening," Brady said through tears.The woman in the video who owns the spa, Phyliis Lucca has a different perspective. She claims that her actions weren't abuse, but instead necessary steps for the dog's overall health."If you see the video, I know it looks bad, but that’s not what I’m doing," Lucca explained. “What the dog did was pass out and she faints and what I did was hold her head and shake her. That’s all.”Two weeks prior to the video going public, a puppy named Pumpkin left the spa with a broken jaw and bruises all over his stomach.Lucca claims that Brady was the one responsible."The only one that was in the room alone, with the dog, was Briana.”However, both Brady and Pumpkin's owner, says they believe Lucca was the only one who could've have harmed the dog. The Spa owner hopes to move forward and survive the blow to her business.“If I get through this, I won't have another groomer in the store because nobody can be trusted now.”Brady and Pumpkin's owner say they will be pressing charges against Lucca. 1853

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked senior federal prosecutors to "evaluate certain issues" presented by House Republicans, including alleged ties between the Clinton Foundation and the sale of Uranium One.The Obama-era sale of the Canadian uranium mining company to Russia's Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom, is already being investigated by House Republicans. UK's government announced on Thursday that it will begin enforcing a ban on the sale of plastic straws, drink stirrers and cotton swabs (with a plastic stem) to combat plastic pollution..UK's government said it will work with companies to come up environmentally friendly alternative products. The government added that it is working to exempt the plastic straw ban for medical purposes. The latest efforts come after the UK has already implemented a ban on plastic microbeads, and began charging a tax on plastic bags. The government said it estimates that the plastic bag tax has reduced the number of plastic bags distributed by 9 billion. "The UK government is a world leader on this issue, and the British public have shown passion and energy embracing our plastic bag charge and microbead ban, and today we have put forward ambitious plans to further reduce plastic waste from straws, stirrers and cotton (swabs)," UK Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement. The actions are part of a 25-year plan to eliminate avoidable plastic waste. 1081
