The Inspector General released a report on Tuesday that contained photos of severe overcrowding inside two Texas border processing centers. The Inspector General toured the facilities during the week of June 10. In the report, inspectors expressed concern over the safety and health of both agents and detainees. “We are concerned that overcrowding and prolonged detention represent an immediate risk to the health and safety of DHS agents and officers, and to those detained,” the report said. “At the time of our visits, Border Management told us there had already been security incidents among adult males at multiple facilities. These included detainees clogging toilets with mylar blankets and socks in order to be released from their cells during maintenance.”To read the full report, click 809
The Hope Medical Group for Women in northern Louisiana fields phone calls every day from anxious pregnant women who ask if abortion is still legal and if the clinic, one of only three that provides abortions in the state, is still open.Despite the protesters who sometimes gather outside, the threats that forced the clinic to board up all the windows and the repeated restrictions put upon abortion providers in this staunchly anti-abortion state, the clinic stands. The Massachusetts Department of Health confirmed on Friday that a second person in the state has died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), which is a deadly disease carried through mosquito bites. Friday's announced marked the sixth known fatality in the United States this year from EEE. There have been two confirmed cases in Massachusetts, three in Michigan and one in Rhode Island. 2019 marks the deadliest year for EEE in more than a decade, according to the CDC.The vast majority of cases over the last decade have been reported in the eastern half other United States. Only one case, reported in Montana, has occurred in the western United States. “We continue to emphasize the need for people to protect themselves from mosquito bites,” said Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD, MPH. “The unusually warm weather expected this weekend will increase outdoor activity among people and mosquitoes. It is absolutely essential that people take steps to avoid being bitten by a mosquito.”On average, there are seven confirmed cases a year of EEE in the U.S, according to the CDC. In 2018, there were six cases of EEE with one being fatal. In 2017, there were five cases, two of which fatal. In 2016, there were seven cases, three of them fatal. The CDC said that on average, one third of all cases are fatal, and death usually occurs 2 to 10 days after the onset of symptoms. The CDC says that survivors of the disease frequently have severe neurological damage.Using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and removing standing water are ways to prevent being infected with EEE. 1630
