YICHANG, Hubei, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The water level at the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, reached 164.59 meters on Sunday, only 10 meters short of its full capacity of 175-meters, said a project official.The dam in central China started to hold back water this September by discharging less to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the country's longest river.Reaching the 175-meter water level would enable the Three Gorges Dam to fulfill its functions of flood control and generating electricity to the fullest extent, symbolizing the total success of the massive water project.This is the reservoir's third attempt to reach full capacity since 2008. However, water levels stopped at 172.8 meters in 2008 and 171.43 meters in 2009 due to droughts on the lower reaches.However, this time officials believe the dam will reach full capacity by the end of October."We have confidence in reaching the goal this year. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The value of yuan, China's currency Renminbi, hit new high against U.S. dollar Monday as the central parity rate of the yuan was set at 6.6732 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Monday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6830 on Oct. 8.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Monday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by about 2.26 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.China would continue reform of the formation mechanism of its currency exchange rate to improve its flexibility, but will do so in a gradual way, Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of China, China's central bank, said in Washington on Sunday.

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation in China, is likely to rise 4.1 percent in October after accelerating to a 23-month high of 3.6 percent in September, the Bank of Communications forecast on Wednesday.The bank, China's fifth largest lender, said in a report that the index would see moderate dips in the coming two months amid decreasing demand due to the slowing economy.But oversupply of liquidity at home, surging food prices, rising labor costs, and pressures caused by imported inflation would mean very limited room for the index to drop, the report said.The report predicts China's CPI would rise 3.1 percent for the entire year of 2010, topping the government's target to keep the inflation rate under 3 percent.It also forecast food prices would rise further during the first half of 2011.Food prices, which account for one-third of weighting in calculating the CPI in China, climbed 8 percent in September, pushing the CPI to the highest level in nearly two years. Food prices had risen 7.5 percent in August, 6.8 percent in July, and 5.7 percent in June.

FUZHOU, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China has begun efforts to build the largest regional cooperation platform, covering a geographical area that produces around one-third of the country's GDP.As key to this effort, on Friday, the 6th Pan Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Regional Cooperation and Development Forum opened in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province.The forum, scheduled to run from Aug. 27-31, is celebrated the theme of "deepening cooperation and seeking common development".
