CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is balancing mitigating risk of exposure to the coronavirus with training to keep Marines ready for deployment."Changes of command are smaller, retirements are smaller," Col. Jeff Holt, Deputy Commander for Marine Corps Installations West, Camp Pendleton, said.At changes of command, Marines are masked and six feet apart, and large formations are no more."We have mitigation measures to protect our people but life's not perfect, life gets in the way. We have to overcome those obstacles and challenges because we have a greater mission and that is to our nation," Col. Holt said.The Marines take pride in the 'First to Fight' motto. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is deployed in Jordan and the 15th MEU is preparing to deploy. Coronavirus is not creating a delay."There are choices that are made to protect the people but also to replicate what we would face in combat because the requirements of the Marine Corps do not stop," Co. Holt said Marines are training the way they would fight overseas.Units are quarantined for two weeks before and after deployment to ensure everyone is healthy. When units are training they are isolating, they do not go home each night. Marines are asked health screening questions and given temperature checks.It's not just training that has changed, the commissary and thrift store have a strict cleaning schedule and safety barriers just like San Diego's grocery stores.Col. Holt said they've been learning from San Diego and took notes, implementing strategies used at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when flights from Wuhan, China arrived. The plane was carrying U.S. citizens that were stranded in Wuhan because of the coronavirus outbreak.At Camp Pendleton, restaurants are also similar to what you would see around the county. (KGTV) — U.S. history from the Mayflower through the American Revolution is on display in Carlsbad.The Green Dragon Tavern and Museum, off Interstate 5 at Palomar Airport Road, offers a full-service restaurant and a chance to look at original documents from the country's Colonial Period."Not a lot of families have the money or time or resources to be able to travel back east and experience these things first hand," says Green Dragon General Manager John Lek. "A lot of our guests say they feel like they're in Boston or New England without having to leave San Diego."The museum's artifacts are all part of a private collection owned by a local man, who asked not to be identified. He wanted to share his collection with the rest of San Diego, and put them on display at the restaurant.Among the items are documents signed by 14 of America's founding fathers. That gives visitors a chance to see the signatures of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, John Hancock and more.Lek says just seeing these items can give people a deeper link to their past."There is something authentic and something that really settles in when you have a direct connection with our forefathers," says Lek.The museum has been open for five years. Right now, everything fits within a single room. But there are plans for expansion.Lek says the museum will open a second room with more interactive and hands-on technology, as well as more artifacts from America's past.Admission to the museum is free, and it's open anytime the restaurant is open. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was killed and seven other teenagers were taken to the hospital after a rollover crash on a Carlsbad street early Wednesday morning.Carlsbad police said the solo-vehicle crash happened at around 2:15 a.m. on Carlsbad Village Drive at Valley Street.According to police, an Toyota 4-Runner SUV with eight people inside rolled over for unknown reasons. A teenage male passenger died at the scene, a lieutenant at the scene told 10News. Family members identified the 16-year-old to 10News as Jack Munday. A GoFundMe to assist the family with expenses has been started here.Police said the female driver and six other passengers survived the crash, but 10News learned three of the survivors crawled out of the wreckage and fled. Those three people returned to the scene a short time later.Three other survivors got out of the vehicle and remained at the scene, while responding firefighters freed a passenger that was trapped inside.Police said the survivors were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries "ranging from minor to serious."Police confirmed the seven survivors, including the SUV’s driver, are under the age of 18.According to police, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash but they are looking at the possibility the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed before the rollover.Lilli O’Connell could hardly hold back the tears as she watched crews working to get the mangled SUV onto a tow truck.“We are a tight community; It’s sad, it’s really sad. I mean, 16 to 18 [years old], that can be anyone at my school. This could happen to anyone,” O’Connell said.O’Connell said she was on this same road Tuesday night because of a get-together in the neighborhood.“I would hope none of those kids are from that party because that ended at 11 p.m. and there was no drinking involved there,” she told 10News reporter Marie Coronel.O’Connell’s father Jim said speed is always a concern for him on this street.He added, “It’s just sad. I mean, again, it’s a parent’s worst nightmare. I saw the news this morning on social media and the first thing I did was check to see that my kids were OK.”The intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive at Valley Street is expected to be closed for several hours due to the investigation and clean-up. 2310
