SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Chicano artists and activists gathered to voice their concerns about two more murals getting torn down during construction on a local school, one week after the first mural was destroyed.The San Diego Unified School District is working on upgrading Memorial Preparatory school in Logan Heights. Part of the upgrade involves tearing down buildings and walls, and on some of those walls are decades-old murals painted by local Chicano artists. The murals all celebrate the history and culture of the local area.Wednesday, Sept. 30, the artists gathered with a group outside the school and asked to save the murals. Moments later, the first mural was destroyed. A spokesperson for the district said that building could not be saved because it had asbestos.The advocates expressed concern over that statement, saying if the asbestos was really that bad, the construction workers should not have let it collapse the way it did, allowing dust to spread into neighboring homes.RELATED: Barrio Logan artists upset about destruction of historic muralOne week later and the artists gathered again in front of the school, this time saying there are two more murals inside the school they want to save. They said to their knowledge, the buildings these murals are painted on are staying up and these areas do not have asbestos, but certain parts are being torn down, including where the murals are. They’re asking the district to save these murals, offering to supply the funding and labor needed to move the artwork.“What we’re saying is we have the resources we have the will and we have the passion to go forward with the removal. So it’s not that it can’t be done, it’s that we’re not being allowed our rights to preserve them for the entire community,” a representative from the group said.KGTV spoke to a representative from the district Sept. 30, who said they did not want to take the murals down but had to for safety reasons due to the asbestos. They also mentioned the construction will benefit the students in the long run. The district could not be reached again the following week, so KGTV was unable to ask why the other two murals cannot be saved. 2176

San Diego City Council Tuesday night unanimously passed the location of a high-pressure underground pipeline to move sewage from San Diego's Morena treatment plant to a facility in Miramar. Residents say they're concerned the pipeline could break, wreaking havoc on the area. "Our concern is if that line was ruptured, bnecause it's under so miuch pressure, that it would spew raw sewage into the environment," said Ruth DeSantis, a longtime U.C. resident who heads the area's community foundation. DeSantis added that neighbors are concerned over traffic, noise, property values, and even smells seeping out of vents. There's a middle school, park, and hundreds of homes nearby. The city says it took various measures to minimize health and safety hazards, although some impacts like noise and traffic are unavoidable during construction.San Diego spokesman Jerry McCormick added that sewage geysers would not be possible under the pipeline system."Unlike a potable water system, where there are multiple loops to provide continuous pressure and in time of a rupture must be isolated by multiple valves, often times creating large releases of water, this system will not operate like that," McCormick said. "Instead, if there is a rupture, we can shut down the pumps and the flow will come to a very abrupt and quick stop."Community groups in University City are now teaming up with those in Clairemont to fight the project."We can put everything in Clairemont and Clairemont is sleeping, and I just wanted to say, that's not right," said Roseline Feral, of the nonprofit Clairemont Town Council. The city is aiming to have about a third of its water supply be reclaimed water by 2035. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory through Thursday for the coastal areas and Friday for the inland valleys in San Diego County.The hot weather and dry fuels create dangerous fire weather conditions, keeping fire crews across the county on high alert.“At nine, it already felt significantly warmer than the last couple of days,” said Elizabeth Conniff as she ended her hike at Iron Mountain Trailhead. “It was pretty hot, hotter than I expected, and very dry.”Poway reached nearly 100 degrees before noon Tuesday, nearing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year.Conniff, an experienced hiker, said that she would not recommend hiking during this time.Hotter temperatures are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.“If it’s going to be 100 or over, stay home, and that is from somebody who hikes three or four days a week,” she said.The NWS warns the hot weather could cause heat-related illnesses and recommends that people stay hydrated and out of the sun.Firefighting agencies ask everyone to remain vigilant and be extra cautious about doing anything that could spark a wildfire. 1141

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- One lucky couple will spend the rest of their lives together after crossing the finish line at America's Finest City half marathon together. The couple got engaged at the finish line in Balboa Park.The half marathon kicked off at the Cabrillo National Monument. Participants ran through Point Loma, past the San Diego Bay, the Embarcadero and ended in Balboa Park.The half-marathon is part of a series of racing called the Triple Crown, which means if runners participated in the La Jolla and Carlsbad marathons, they received a special medal today. Proceeds from the race go to several local charities.  660

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Dreamers across San Diego have a week's worth of rallies, protests and programs planned on Community College Campuses.Students under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, say it's time to come out of the shadows on campus and show their fellow students, teachers and administrators the role they play."DACA students are here, Dreamers are here, and they’re here to stay," says Miguel Mellado, a DACA student at Southwestern College."We have to really stand up and say we’re here, we’re proud, we’re working hard, and we deserve more," he says.Mellado's parents brought him to America when he was eight years old. He didn't learn he was undocumented until middle school. He says it left him feeling isolated.His desire to find community, and help others do the same, is what led him to help organize this week's "Undocumented Students Week of Action."Events begin Monday at City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and Southwestern College. The San Diego Community College District has already announced their support of the programs.An estimated 1,000 undocumented students are enrolled at those colleges."DACA recipients are some of our hardest working and brightest students, and it is our duty to advocate on their behalf," said San Diego Mesa College President Pamela Luster."Clearly, these deserving students who came to the U.S. as children, who have not been convicted of any crimes and who are earnestly seeking an education to improve their lives, are tremendous assets to our community."But that support has upset some people in San Diego who feel DACA students take opportunities and resources away from other students.Raul Rodriguez, Jr., the California Coordinator for America First Latinos, told 10News that taxpayer-funded schools shouldn't be supporting events like this since the students were brought into the country illegally.Meanwhile, the DACA Act is tied up in courts, after President Trump announced an end to the act in September of 2017. Mellado says he and his fellow Dreamers shouldn't wait for the government to solve the issue."I don’t believe policy helps that much," he says.
