SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prior to today's San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the Port of San Diego will host the annual Solar Turbines 5K run/walk and the Holiday Bowl Parade along Harbor Drive.The Port will host the 24th annual Solar Turbines 5K run and walk at 9:45 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. Participants in the 5K will run and walk from the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street to Ruocco Park. The parade will begin in front of the County Administration Building and process south down Harbor Drive to its intersection with Pacific Highway.According to Port officials, the parade will include 29 giant balloons, 10 marching bands and multiple floats and drill teams. The marching bands from Northwestern University and the University of Utah, the two teams playing in the Holiday Bowl, will perform during the parade."The Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is one of the Port's signature events, bringing approximately 100,000 spectators, including many from out of state, to the beautiful San Diego bayfront," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Rafael Castellanos. "It's a wonderful way to activate the waterfront and to add an economic boost to the region."County Supervisor Ron Roberts will serve as the parade's grand marshal. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Playgrounds in San Diego County can reopen to the public Wednesday, despite initially being closed under COVID-19 restrictions, after state health officials reversed course.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, led a group of a dozen legislators who sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom last week urging him to remove playgrounds from the stay-at-home order. They claimed opening playgrounds "is necessary for the mental and physical health of children to have opportunities to expend their physical energy and play." They also noted that in some low-income neighborhoods, "families may have little to no outdoor space of their own available."Newsom and the California Department of Public Health revised statewide public health guidelines on Wednesday to allow for public playgrounds to remain open."Every parent knows how important playgrounds are for our youngest Californians," Gonzalez said. "A huge thank you to Governor Newsom for hearing our collective concern and rethinking how we can open play structures for our kids."Playgrounds were closed earlier in the pandemic before being reopened in September. Then, with a spike in case rates and the state's issuance of a regional stay-at-home order, which took effect late Sunday night across all of Southern California, playgrounds closed again.Pressure from parents and legislators have now caused the state to reopen the playgrounds.According to the state's website, "playgrounds may remain open to facilitate physically distanced personal health and wellness through outdoor exercise. Playgrounds located on schools that remain open for in-person instruction, and not accessible by the general public, may remain open and must follow guidance for schools and school-based programs."San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond made a motion at the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday to defy the state order and not enforce the playground closure. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society released a series of tips to help keep pets safe this holiday season."With the bustling holiday season upon us, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to consider their pets' safety when decking the halls," an SDHS release said. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. Ribbons and bows can be a choking hazard and any packages filled with edible gifts are likely to be discovered-- A number of holiday season plants are toxic or can cause digestive upset to pets if nibbled or eaten, including amaryllis, Christmas cactus, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias. Be sure all plants are kept out of reach of pets-- Burning candles should be placed high, out of any pet's way. A dog's tail wag or a cat's curiosity could be devastating. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns-- Pets can get stressed with noise and activity. Give a pet a quiet, secure place with a bed and their favorite toys to escape the commotion. Put food, water and a litter box for cats in that space-- Holiday distractions may make it easier for pets to escape through open doors. Keep pets safely indoors and always make sure they're wearing current ID tags with a phone number and that their microchip information is up to date-- Pets thrive on routine and increased activity during the holiday season can upset that routine. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said.
