A woman in South Florida called 911 after a bullet came through her car's windshield -- but dispatchers didn't send help right away. Police say they mishandled the call while their supervisor was streaming a Netflix movie.Guadalupe Herrera was driving near a gas station in Coral Springs on June 9 when what she thought was an object that might be a bullet almost hit her head. She called 911 three times seeking help, but officers were not dispatched until 34 minutes after the first call, according to a Coral Springs police internal investigation, which was first reported by the 595

An armed man was fatally shot early Saturday during a confrontation with police after he hurled incendiary devices at a Washington state immigration detention center, Tacoma police said. The shooting occurred about 4 a.m. local time outside the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Northwest Detention Center, where the gunman attempted to set the building and parked cars on fire, according to police spokeswoman Loretta Cool.Authorities did not immediately identify the gunman, saying in the statement the "medical examiner will release the identity of the victim when it is appropriate."The assault on the privately-run immigrant detention facility came amid protests over ICE plans to begin the previously postponed raids across the country on Sunday. The goal is the arrest of thousands of migrant families who already have court orders to be removed, according to US officials.A peaceful rally against the raids at the Tacoma detention center had ended about six hours before the shooting, Cool said. The immigration enforcement action has sparked protests in nearly a dozen American cities, drawn criticism from mayors and immigrant rights advocates, and unleashed waves of fear among undocumented immigrants across the country. The motive behind the armed man's pre-dawn attack in unclear, Cool said. The Tacoma facility, which holds nearly 1,500 detainees, has been the scene of more than a dozen hunger strikes in recent years -- each involving from a dozen to hundreds of detainees, over complaints of inadequate food and medical care, among other issues. Police said the man set a vehicle ablaze in the center's parking lot and attempted to ignite a propane tank with a flare to set the building on fire. Officers called out to the man and shots were fired, according

A suspect in arson fires at three historically black Louisiana churches is a law enforcement officer's son who may have been influenced by "black metal" music and "its associated history with church burnings," the state fire marshal said Thursday. The man was identified as Holden Matthews, 21, according to Gov. John Bel Edwards, who called the fires a reminder of "a very dark past of intimidation and fear.""I don't know what this young man's motive was, I don't know what was in his heart, but I can say it cannot be justified or rationalized," Edwards told reporters. "These were evil acts. But let me be clear about this, hate is not a Louisiana value."Matthews is charged with three counts of simple arson on a religious building, State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years. Matthews has no history of violence or prior arrests, officials said."We can now confirm all three of these fires are intentionally set and all three of these fires are related," Browning said. The motive is still under investigation, and federal officials are looking into whether the fires represent a hate crime."Information investigators have uncovered, and that Matthews has offered, suggests a possible connection with a genre of music called 'black metal' and its associated history with church burnings in other parts of the world, which have been documented in movies and books," Browning said. "Any questions as to the potential motives of hate are continuing to be vetted by federal authorities."Matthews is the son of a local sheriff's deputy, said St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. He said he broke the news of Matthews' alleged involvement to the deputy, whom he described as one of his best friends."As we all know, Holden's father is an employee of mine, a fine man," Guidroz said. "He was shocked and hurt as any father would be ... He was in terrible shape."St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre burned on March 26, followed by Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and, two days later, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in the same town.Officials are also investigating a fourth, smaller fire on March 31 at the predominantly white Vivian United Pentecostal Church in Caddo Parish, more than 200 miles north of St. Landry. The blaze was intentionally set. Officials said Thursday they had no evidence linking the Caddo fire to the other three. The FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigations. A newborn baby with COVID-19 has died in Connecticut, officials said Wednesday. The 6-week-old child was from the Hartford area, Gov. Ned Lamont said. The baby was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived. "Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was COVID-19 positive," Lamont said. "This is absolutely heartbreaking. We believe this is one of the youngest lives lost anywhere due to complications relating to COVID-19."A baby also died of coronavirus in 508
