DEER SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) — One person died in a fire that destroyed two trailers and a garage in the unincorporated Escondido area on Saturday.The fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Rocky Ridge Road at Sage Glen Trail in Deer Springs, according to CAL FIRE San Diego.San Diego Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene to find fire crews actively trying to douse the flames. The 71-year-old homeowner told deputies he just arrived home from fishing before hearing a loud explosion as he was left the garage.The explosion caused a fire that spread throughout the garage and to some adjacent trailers, deputies say. The blaze destroyed two residential trailers and the detached garage.All residents were account for except man, who was later found dead inside one of the trailers, according to the Sheriff's Department. The victim's identity was not immediately released.Sheriff's Bomb and Arson detectives were working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. 998

(AP) — A tornado touched down in a California field as weekend thunderstorms swept through the central part of the state, dropping rain and dime-sized hail, forecasters said.Cellphone video posted online showed a towering vortex spinning Saturday evening near Davis.National Weather Service forecaster Emily Heller told the San Francisco Chronicle that there was no damage. Tornadoes in the Central Valley aren't entirely unusual and are "weaker and more short-lived" than ones typically seen in the Midwest, she said.Saturday's storm blanketed some roadways with hail in and around Solano County. More stormy conditions were possible Sunday evening.To the east, forecasters issued a winter weather advisory after several inches of snow fell in the Sierra Nevada.Heller called it "the first real snow of the season."Elevations of 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) and above recorded up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of fresh powder on Saturday. DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — A quiet neighborhood in Dawsonville, Georgia is in shock after a Tampa man traveled there and allegedly killed his ex-wife and her sister on Thursday.Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said Kelley McDonald Jr., 39, shot four people in the home before turning the gun on himself.  McDonald's ex-wife and her sister were both killed. McDonald shot and wounded a 16-year-old in the home and his 2-year-old daughter. Both were rushed to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, according to Jarrard.The sheriff said the victim was hiding from her ex-husband but he tracked her down to the community about an hour north of Atlanta. Around 8:30 a.m., deputies responded to a call of shots fired. A 13-year-old inside the home during the shooting was able to escape and call 911.Court documents show McDonald and his ex-wife divorced in October 2017. According to an active arrest warrant out of Hillsborough County, Florida, McDonald was wanted for attacking his ex-wife on December 30 inside her Tampa condo. The warrant was for domestic violence with strangulation and burglary with assault.  Tampa neighbors said they were friendly with the victim but noticed a lot of police going in and out of the home. They said she recently moved out. They were shocked and saddened to learn she was murdered.McDonald’s mother spoke to Scripps station WFTS in Tampa outside her Tampa home. She said the family was “shocked and just learning of the news.”  Court documents show an emergency motion was filed on February 26 by the victim asking domestic violence injunction petition.  Lumpkin County Sheriff 's Office posted on Facebook that anyone seeking refuge for domestic violence in a community should always reach out to any local domestic violence organization they can contact.The sheriff writing on Facebook, “If you have taken refuge in a community, I encourage you to reach out to the local law enforcement of that area so that they may be aware of any situations that might arise in order to keep you and your family safe.”The names of the victims have not been released. 2156

DENVER, Colo. — Navigating the U.S. health care system can be daunting. It’s even harder for those who don’t speak English. However, some programs are trying to bridge the gap between these communities and health care providers.“A Vietnamese patient that lived near by here, she ran across the street and she got hit. On that day, she was rushed to the hospital and she was in the ICU. I was in the ICU for three night,” said Father Joesph Dang as he rehashed a tough memory. The young woman he’s talking about passed away. Her family spoke little to no English and he had to help them navigate through the health care system.“The family was in shock. The language was a language barrier,” said Dang.Dang is a community liaison with Denver Health. He works with the Fredrico F. Pena Family Health Center in the heart of the Vietnamese American community in Denver.As a community liaison, Dang focuses on outreach with his community and helping patients navigate the health system.“I speak Vietnamese. This how I come to support Denver Health by navigating, by giving our patients guidance, also tell them what kind of services that we offer here,” said Dang.That may not sound like a lot, but having a familiar face that speaks the same language as you can be a big deal to minority patients.“I think language is the first step of course. It’s hard to communicate with anyone if the messaging, the public health messaging, the hotlines, and the places that are set up don’t have the language that someone speaks,” said Kathleen Page. Page is a professor at Johns Hopkins University and helped start the Hopkins Organization for Latino Awareness which tries to improve health outcomes for the Latino community. She says the role of community liaisons is invaluable.“It’s so important to have messengers in the community. I can say to people, you know, I’m a doctor, trust me, please come to the hospital, we’ll take care of you. I think it means a lot more if someone who has been in the hospital says trust me, I went to the hospital, I got care, and now here I am,” she said. Page says it’s not surprising when certain minority groups experience bad health outcomes at higher rates.“When a group of is excluded from everything, excluded from services, excluded from health care and also in a way encouraged, or feel like they have to live in the shadows. It’s not surprising that when a public health emergency happens, they are going to be the ones that are left behind,” said Page. For Dang, his goal remains clear, to provide a bridge from his community to better health.“I want to bring first class service to our Vietnamese American community. What does that mean? Meaning speak in their own language, understand their culture, and understand the gap between western medicine and the eastern medicine," said Dang. 2828

Deputies say a woman attacked a mother and daughter on a Greyhound bus that had departed from Las Vegas. According to investigators, three strangers helped to save the child's life.The bus left Las Vegas shortly after 7 a.m. Monday and was headed to San Francisco. Teresa Ann Andrade Madrigal attacked the mother and child, just 45 minutes after leaving the station in Bakersfield, authorities report."The lady had the baby in her hand," said one passenger, "...and next thing I know, I heard she has a knife."Investigators say Madrigal appeared to be delusional. They say Madrigal grabbed the child around the neck and held her at knife point. That's when the child's mother started to fight the attacker.Soon, the bus driver and two other passengers jumped into action. The mother was stabbed in the abdomen. The men were able to help get the child  away from the suspect.In total, five people were hurt. We're told Madrigal, who was speaking to herself, was initially asked to get off the bus. The driver felt that it was safe to let the woman back on the bus after speaking with her outside.Right now, the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Investigators say Madrigal also stabbed herself. The child's mother, who has not been identified, had surgery on Monday.  She is expected to make a full recovery.
