Imagine if you found your child watching a video giving instructions on how to kill themselves. It’s a video Florida mom and pediatrician Free Hess found on YouTube. She found a similar video on YouTube Kids. Hess pushed for YouTube to remove it, and they did. “I think it's definitely difficult, maybe more now than it ever has been before,” Hess says. Mother of two, Caroline Craddock, says she's vigilant about what her kids watch even though they’re just 2 and 4 years old. “They're sometimes watching YouTube or Amazon Prime, stuff like that. And I always try to be in the room with them, so I can at least be listening to what they're watching to make sure that it's appropriate content for their ages,” Craddock says. Experts say messages from a platform like YouTube or YouTube Kids can be powerful for children. That's why Dr. Andrea Maikovich-Fond, a clinical psychologist at Kaiser Permanente, says opening up a safe and healthy dialogue with kids is the most important thing parents can do. “Letting your children know you are someone safe to come and talk to if it's something they've seen if it's an idea they have, if it's something they're concerned about in terms of their own thoughts or feelings,” Dr. Maikovich-Fond says. When it comes to tough topics like suicide, she says it's a myth that asking children if they're having those thoughts puts those ideas in their head. “We know from study after study that talking to children about how they're doing and what they're feeling, even if it's a topic as scary as suicide, actually is helpful,” Dr. Maikovich-Fond says.YouTube said in a statement that it takes feedback seriously. In an interview with CNN, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said that coronavirus could be around for the entire duration of 2020 as the CDC prepares for the possibility of a widespread infection. This comes as the CDC says that the risk to the general public is low. While thousands have been infected in China, there have been only 15 confirmed cases in the United States. Although Redfield expects there is a possibility of it becoming a "community virus," aggressively monitoring those with suspected and confirmed cases buys the CDC time. The time is needed as Redfield told CNN that not much is known about how coronavirus is spread, and how to treat it. "The containment phase is really to give us more time. The virus will become a community virus at some point in time, this year or next year," Redfield told CNN. "We don't have any evidence that this coronavirus is really embedded in the community at this time, but with that said, we want to intensify our surveillance so that we're basing those conclusions based on data."Making things more challenging for Redfield, he said, is that it's possible for someone infected with coronavirus to not display symptoms. "What I've learned in the last two weeks is that the spectrum of this illness is much broader than was originally presented. There's much more asymptomatic illness," Redfield said. Japan’s health ministry says 44 more people on a quarantined cruise ship have tested positive for the virus that causes the new disease known as COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus. The ship now has 218 people infected with the virus out of 713 people tested since it entered Yokohama Port on Feb. 3. Health Minister Katsunobu Kato says five patients now in hospitals have severe symptoms and are on artificial respirators or under intensive care. Japan's government has decided to allow passengers older than 80 to get off the ship after testing negative for the virus. Those with chronic health problems or in cabins without windows will be given priority. 677
