SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A longtime North Park business has been forced to shutter its doors due to the economic toll of the pandemic.A&B Sporting Goods has sat on University Ave. for 79 years. The business told ABC 10News that it thrives off of local youth sports, which have largely been canceled this year due to the coronavirus.Owner Greg Schloss, whose father and grandfather worked at the store before him, said he hadn't planned on closing shop, but could not keep the business going any longer."I've worked here 40 years. The neighborhood is driven by a lot of kids playing ball in this neigborhood. We cannot thank our friends enough for your ongoing support. We were so fortunate to be part of the North Park community for so many decades. There was never anything better than your kids coming in every year to pick up their North Park Little League apparel and equipment," a Facebook post on the store's site read. Shoppers are also encouraged to stop in and shop over the next month. The store's social post added that everything will be sold and reasonable offers for merchandise will be accepted. 1707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man died after crashing his car into a ditch overnight Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened on I-5 north near Clairemont in East Mission Bay. Officers say they believe the single-vehicle crash happened sometime overnight, but wasn't reported until the sun came up. According to CHP, the car crashed into a ditch on the side of a freeway. Officers say it's too early to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.  521

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach gym ordered to close for not adhering to the county's health orders and linked to one community outbreak has reopened.The Gym was forced to close on July 23 for violating public health orders after "the owners/operators of the Gym have acknowledged that they are aware of the Public Health Orders but will not voluntarily comply," according to a copy of the county order. A week after the county ordered the gym to close, a community outbreak was traced back to the fitness center, according to health officials.The county confirmed on Sunday that the gym has been allowed to reopen after altering their facility to be in compliance with health orders requiring that gyms move workouts outdoors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political party is accused of tricking some San Diego voters into joining them.San Diego Registrar of Voters' Michael Vu told 10News he has referred the matter to the District Attorney and the Secretary of State's Fraud Investigation Unit.The Common Sense Party was founded by former Republicans and is currently attempting to get the 67,000 signatures needed to appear on future ballots as an state-recognized political party. A co-founder told 10News the party hired a third-party company in San Diego to help gather the signatures.RELATED: Early voting begins in California Primary as San Diego County sends out mail ballotsHowever, as first uncovered in an investigation by 10News media partner KPBS, dozens of San Diego voters who are registered for the Common Sense Party say they did not remember signing up and, in fact, had not even heard of the party.Some said the signature gatherer told them they were signing a housing petition. Others said they were given a voter registration form that did not include a place to indicate party preference. When KPBS obtained the form that had been filed by the signature party gatherer for one of the voters, she said she hadn't made any changes. "Oh, no. This is not something I recognize. That is not my handwriting. I don't remember signing this form out," SDSU student Kameron Dollinger said.Julie Meier Wright, a well known civic and political leader who helped found the Common Sense Party, told 10News they are shocked by the accusations and are working to get to the bottom of what happened. 10News left a voice mail for the signature gathering company, but has not heard back.Vu urges all San Diegans to check their registration online before going to vote, in order to ensure that they will get the proper ballot. 1805

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A rash of mail tampering incidents has led to missing money and an unusual M.O.On Winnebago Avenue in late June, Kelly Craig was standing in front of her home talking to a neighbor."Around 10:30 a.m., the mail carrier dropped off the mail in front of me," said Craig.A few minutes later, Craig got her mail and noticed something. One of her envelopes was sliced open on the side. "Looks like a razor blade slit the side," said Craig.Inside, she found a birthday card from her mother, mailed from Montana. The usual money was not there. A call to mom revealed 0 in cash should have been inside."Felt panicked and really sad the money was missing, and my mom was really upset," said Craig.Craig wasn't alone. That same day, less than two miles away, her daughter-in-law went to get her mail."She got a wedding card from my sister, and it had cash in it as well," said Craig.The 0 that was inside was gone. That envelope was also sliced open on the left side, but there was one difference. The side and back of the enveloped were resealed with tape."Clearly trying to cover up their stealing of the money," said Craig.When Craig and her daughter-in-law reported it to postal authorities, they say they were told of similar recent incidents, including one if the College Area. On the Nextdoor app , several neighbors also reporting similar incidents. Postal supervisors told Craig her card went through multiple locations, before ending up at the Clairemont post office for delivery."Somewhere along the line, someone took that money out," said Craig.The USPS has warned against sending cash in the mail. 10news did reach out to the Postal Inspection Service and are waiting to hear back. 1717
