SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman is searching for the hero who saved her from drowning after a cliff dive at Sunset Cliffs.“I think the ocean really taught me a lesson that day. It really did,” Justice Arreguin said.It happened a week ago Sunday.Arreguin was with some friends when she jumped off the cliff into the water. The first jump was fine, she said. But when she jumped the second time, it almost killed her.The big waves pulled her under and tossed her around. She couldn't breathe.“Then this guy he just popped out of nowhere and he was like 'you have to stay calm. Try to stay calm,'" Arreguin said. "And so I did and after a while, he jumped in the water when it was safe."The man pulled justice out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A senior "hero" leapt into action when she saw a man snatching a neighbor's package in the La Jolla area.On a quiet afternoon last week, Gillian Ackland was in her living room when she saw an unfamiliar white car park right in her cul-de-sac off Colima Street in Bird Rock."It felt kind of strange," said Ackland.Next door was a big package sitting outside her neighbor's door.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"The car suddenly starts backing up diagonally. I realize he's going for the package, and I run out the front door, saw him with the package and ran to his side of the car," said Ackland.Her neighbor's Ring camera captured it all. In the video, a man is seen walking up to the door, grabbing the big package and a smaller one. As he starts running to his car, so does Ackland, who yells, "That's not yours!" three times.He shoves the package in the back seat, but the door didn't fully close."There was adrenaline going," said Ackland.Ackland sensed her chance."I knew I had a few seconds and I could do something - and I did it," said Ackland.She opened the back door and tried to pull the package out. The package starts to fall out, but not far enough, as the car drives off. Ackland has no regrets."The injustice of all kept me going. I just felt it's not right, and I just thought I could get the package away from him," said Ackland.Another neighbor took a photo of the car showing an Uber sticker on the front windshield. Inside the package was a side table. She says the neighbor missing the package thanked her profusely. He told 10News she is a "superhero neighbor.""It's actually a little embarrassing," said Ackland.The video was shared on the "Neighbors by Ring" app."It's important that neighbors look out for each other. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost a dozen gyms retained a lawyer, preparing for a fight to stay open against San Diego County's health orders.Monday Governor Gavin Newsom announced a long list of businesses needed to close down again, due to a spike in coronavirus cases.That list includes:places of worship restaurants wineries movie theatersfamily entertainment centerszoos museums cardroomsfitness centerssalonsmalls.Metroflex Gym in Oceanside has been open since May despite the health orders. Owner Lou Uridel said this renewed push to close puts them in a corner and if they close, they won't reopen."We have only one plan, that's to stay open, we don't have the option to keep closing opening, closing opening." Uridel said they've been denied a dozen times for loans."I feel like it would be a betrayal of my faith and a betrayal of my dreams to give up on that and just close down," he said.Uridel said they're a place many find comfort, "we're continuing to get a lot of new gym members, we have stopped signing up people as of today." Uridel said they had to stop to ensure their members have access to the gym with the limited capacity imposed by the county's health orders.San Diego County announced this week they were putting together strike teams to ensure businesses in the list above shut down."It definitely doesn't scare us," he said.He said the laywer they hired found a loophole where the state health order was filed by the health department, and if they are not violating any health regulations they cannot be closed down.San Diego County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said they were just following the state's recommendations and those businesses need to shut down to protect the community and bring down coronavirus case numbers.Uridel said they are doing everything possible to create a healthy gym environment.He said they brought in a biologist to measure their air flow with their bay doors open and about a half dozen industrial fans in place.Uridel said their air flow rated 9.1/10.He said every gym member washes their hands on the way in and out, and wipe down their equipment. He said social distancing is in place and there is more cleaning each hour.He said if the county comes after them, "all we can really do is take it in the chin, whatever they're going to throw at us. If they're going to fine us, we'll fight it in court."When asked if he was worried about his staff or members getting sick, he said "it's always a concern, but it's a concern at any business, even the ones that remain open. If you check around, a lot of cases have come out of Home Depot, and grocery stores and there hasn't been one blink to close any of those down."He says his gym is a place of healing, helping military members fight PTSD and others work through the trauma of the coronavirus.Uridel said one man who lost his wife to suicide and faced other challenges is a regular at his gym. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Syrian refugee who took his Uber passenger across the U.S.-Mexico border into Tijuana was detained last week by Customs and Border Protection officers.Hussam Abdul Noor immigrated to San Diego one year ago and was in the process of applying for a green card to stay in the United States, according to his former coworker Wally Ghamraoui.Noor supported his wife and two children by working at a gas station in El Cajon. He had refugee employment authorization document. Two weeks ago, Noor began working as an Uber driver, Uber confirmed. Noor wanted the job because the pay was better, said Ghamraoui.RELATED: ICE releases UC San Diego student detained at border Last Wednesday, Noor took an Uber passenger across the border into Mexico. An Uber spokesperson said the passenger must have requested the trip because it is not possible to order a ride across the U.S.-Mexico border through the Uber app.Noor's wife woke up at 3 a.m. and noticed he wasn't home. "He sent her a What'sApp message that don't be afraid, I got held up at the border and I should be back home soon," family friend Nibras Maleh translated.When Noor tried to drive back into the U.S., he was detained at the border by customs officers. "I'm concerned," Ghamraoui said, tearing up, "I hope they don't deport him, he need to fix, to learn something from his mistake."Attorney Lilia Velasquez works in immigration law and said anyone with Noor’s immigration status is not allowed to leave the United States during the legal process. She believes it could take weeks for Noor to return, if the judge allows."You know they're suffering, but we do tell them, 'Why didn't you call the immigration service? Why didn't you make an appointment? Why didn't you call a lawyer?' One minute phone call, if the person would've called me, I would've said, 'It's a no no, do you have a travel document? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman who participated in a local coronavirus vaccine trial is sharing her experience.Although it’s a blind study, she says she’s convinced she received the vaccine and she hopes her story will encourage others to get vaccinated.During the summer, American biotech company Moderna began some of its phase three trials in San Diego. Leslie Sullivan was one of those patients.“I put my name in the hat and by the end of July I was in getting my first dose,” she told 10News.The vaccine is given in two doses. “It felt like a flu shot and not much in the way of reaction after the first one,” Sullivan added.She says the second time she received the shot, she felt something. “By midnight I spiked a fever, I had chills, it was exactly like how the flu feels.”A day later, Sullivan was back to normal.Sullivan doesn’t know whether or not she got the vaccine, but says based on the symptoms she experienced, she’s almost positive she didn’t get a placebo. She says some people she’s spoken with mistakenly believe that if she got the actual vaccine, she had COVID-19.“The vaccine does not give you COVID this particular one has no live virus in it at all.”Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines use MRNA technology, which relies on messenger RNA to essentially trick the body into making antibodies to fight the virus.At some point Sullivan will find out if she did indeed get the vaccine When a vaccine is made available to the public, those who received a placebo will be notified so they can get vaccinated. 1544
